A 3-year-old boy who was lost in the forest for two days is now safe at home with his family. But Casey Hathaway told reporters that he was not alone in the rainy, freezing cold forest. He said he was with a friend — a bear.
The child went missing on January 22, 2019 while playing with friends at his grandmother’s house in the southern state of North Carolina. When the other children returned to the house and Casey did not, the family searched the area for almost an hour before calling the police. The police organized a search team to search the nearby forest for the little boy. But two days went by and Casey was still not found.
Then on January 24, someone called the police saying he heard a child crying in the forest. The police followed up the information and found Casey at about 9:30 that night. They pulled him out of some briar (荆棘). He was in good health.
Casey told the police that he had hung out with a black bear for two days, a bear he called his “friend.” The police told reporters that Casey did not say how he was able to survive in the forest for two days in the cold, rainy weather. However, the police said, “He did say he had a friend in the forest that was a bear that was with him.”
Hundreds of people helped in the search, including some 600 volunteers, policemen and soldiers. An officer told reporters that at no point did he think Casey had been kidnapped (绑架). Casey’s mother Brittany Hathaway told reporters she thanked everyone who joined the search for her son. “We just want to tell everybody that we really thank you for taking the time out to come to search for Casey,” said his mother.

Don’t call Madison Stewart an environmentalist. She sees herself simply as an individual taking action in defense of something she loves that’s in need of protection.
Despite her youth, the 24-year-old is an undersea veteran (老手). She grew up sailing around the Great Barrier Reef on her parents’ boat and spent her early life free diving while patiently waiting for the day when she could get her scuba diving (水肺潜水) certification(证书), aged 12. Already impressed by sharks, Madison was now pleased to be able to observe them in their own world. “I got to know the sharks...I could recognize them by sight,” Madison says. “Other people had dogs around them growing up. I had sharks.”
But within a couple of years, she saw a great reduction in shark numbers on the reef. “One day I went in the water and couldn’t find my sharks anywhere, sharks I’d spent my childhood with,” she says. “They’d been caught and killed.” It was a great moment for Madison.
She left school at 14 to be homeschooled so she could spend more time in the ocean. She taught herself to shoot underwater video to document sharks in their own world and share her sense of wonder with others. She launched a YouTube channel and built a huge following for her documentaries where she focuses on issues like inadequate(不恰当的) protection for some shark species and the global shark fin (鳍) industry.
In 2014 Madison was the subject of the encouraging documentary Shark Girl, which introduced her to a global audience. In 2017 she appeared as an “Ocean Guardian” in the documentary Blue that explored a lot of threats to the world’s marine environments, including the damaging effect of the global shark fishery. The film encourages viewers to get involved and includes practical steps to guide them to do so. It shows Madison’s philosophy(人生观) that the power of the individual to make a difference by their own direct action should never be underestimated.
28.What did Madison do before getting her scuba diving certification
A.She went sailing often. B.She went boating alone.
C.She practised free diving. D.She protected the Great Barrier Reef.
29.Why did Madison shoot underwater video to document sharks
A.To record sharks’ world of wonder. B.To popularize her photography works.
C.To raise awareness of shark conservation. D.To spare more time to accompany sharks.
30.Which of the following may agree with Madison’s philosophy
A.Many hands make light work. B.Action speaks louder than words.
C.Together we can make a difference. D.Personal influence can’t be ignored.
31.What’s the purpose of writing this passage
A.To introduce an influential conservationist.
B.To advertise some encouraging documentaries.
C.To inspire people to protect whatever they love.
D.To inform people how to preserve marine wildlife.

If you’ve ever had trouble finding your keys or remembering what you had for breakfast, you know that short-term memory is far from perfect. For people who’ve had a traumatic brain injury (TBI), though, recalling (回忆) recent events or conversations can be a major struggle.
“We have patients whose family cannot leave them alone at home because they will turn on the stove and forget to turn it off,” says Dr. Ramon Diaz-Arrastia, who directs the Traumatic Brain Injury Clinical Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania. So Arrastia and a team of scientists have been testing a possible treatment. It involves delivering a pulse (脉冲) of electricity to the brain at just the right time.
And it worked in a study of eight people with moderate or severe TBIs, the team reports in the journal Brain Stimulation. A precisely timed pulse to a brain area just behind the ear improved recall by about 20 percent and reduced the person’s memory deficit (缺失) by about half.
If the results pan out in a larger study, the approach might improve the lives of many young people who survive a serious TBI, says Diaz-Arrastia, an author of the study and a professor of neurology at Penn. “In many cases, the reason they’re unable to rejoin and fully participate in society is because of their memory problems,” he says. “And they often have this disability that goes on for many, many decades.” But the treatment is not for the timid. It requests patients to have electrodes surgically implanted in their brain. And scientists are still perfecting the system that delivers the electrical pulses.
While experimental, the results offer hope for individuals with memory deficits due to traumatic brain injuries. If the technique continues to show promise, it could transform memory recall and cognitive function improvement for those who need it most.
32. Why did Arrastia’s team do the research
A. To cut the cost of treating TBI.
B. To show interest in electrical pulses.
C. To find the treatment of memory deficits.
D. To explain problems of short-term memory.
33. What does the underlined phrase “pan out” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Change. B. Occur. C. Differ. D. Develop.
34. What does the author think of the treatment
A. It is ambiguous. B. It is unreliable. C. It is successful. D. It is promising.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Scientists Work Hard at Brain
B. Brain Memory Is a Matter of Concern
C. Electrical Pulses Improve Brain Memory
D. Researchers Make Progress in Treating Illness

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The frightening day of our diving test was here. Our parents thought we were lucky to have an Olympic-size swimming pool at the school. My mom stressed that the swimming pool was one of the best in our city. But I didn’t feel happy about it at all. Instead, I felt afraid of the swimming pool. It was mainly because I was terribly shy.
I was so shy that I always sat at the back of the room in class so I’d not be called upon to read. As for the present physical education class each Monday morning, I would work my way to the back of the line forming at the diving board so I would not have to practice the dives.
Now, it was another Monday morning - the morning of our diving test. My blood ran cold when the teacher Ms. Robbins announced that we would be graded for our final on the most difficult dive- the jackknife. And she added, “This diving test is important. The one who fails has to spare time in the following Monday mornings to practice diving in this swimming pool and attend this test again.”
My body kept shaking with fear as the line to the scary diving board shortened. As I watched, each student seemed to perform the challenging dive effortlessly. And shortly I would have to attempt something that I had never even practiced before.
Then I remembered someone telling me that when you picture yourself doing a skill over and over, it’s just as effective as physically practicing that skill. So I watched carefully as each classmate jumped at the end of the board once, added a jump for height, folded their body in half to reach for their toes, and finally straightened out like an arrow for going into the water. After carefully watching for a while, I was actually in a state of surprise, because all of a sudden I realized that it was possible for me to perform these four steps of diving.
Eventually all classmates except me finished jumping. The teacher announced that it was my turn.
注意:1. 续与词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With my heart knocking wildly, I walked down the diving board towards its end.

One possible version:
With my heart knocking wildly, I walked down the diving board towards its end. Looking down, I found all my classmates were looking up at me. My face suddenly felt hot. Finally, I ignored them. Picturing the four steps of diving, I jumped. Then I folded my body but failed to reach for my toes. And instead of entering the water like an arrow, I fell into the water, with my body being flat. As a result, it caused a huge sound, which made all the classmates burst out laughing.
Knowing I failed, I climbed out of the pool, embarrassed. After class, Ms. Robbins comforted and encouraged me. In the following many Monday mornings, I practiced again and again under her guidance. Gradually, I became more confident and less shy. Finally, I attended the diving test again and performed well. This time, my classmates cheered and clapped. I was so glad. I knew my success resulted from my beating my shyness and my hard practice.
