Lin Wanqi, a 26-year-old resident of Shanghai, was among the earliest to try Luckin Coffee’s new Moutai-flavored latte. Eager to sample this “young people’s first sip of Moutai”, she was curious about how her beloved coffee tastes with Chinese liquor in it. “The aroma (香味) of the alcohol is very strong and is well blended with the milk,” Lin told Teens.
The coffee drink, packaged with an iconic Moutai-themed label and containing less than 0.5 percent (alcohol by volume) of 53 degrees Moutai, is priced at 38 yuan, although consumers can get it for 19 yuan using coupons (优惠券).
“I admire the spirit of innovation of the two brands, and the spirit is also shared by young people,” said Lin. In recent years, Moutai has embarked on various creative campaigns to appeal to younger customers, introducing products like Moutai ice cream, scented sachets (香囊), and canvas bags.
“This creative partnership lets Moutai make its brand younger,” Li Honghui, a marketing director for drinks, told Teens. Li also pointed out that such creative collaborations (合作) can bring benefits to both brands. “Through partnerships, brands can share resources, expand the market, and bring more diversified and innovative products to consumers,” Li said.
However, flawed (有缺陷的) partnerships may lead to negative consequences. Take the collaboration between Chinese coffee chain Manner and French luxury brand Louis Vuitton (LV), for example. Consumers could get a free LV canvas bag by buying at least two books in the coffee shop. The two books would cost at least 580 yuan. The campaign was sharply criticized for the high barrier of entry to receive the gift and many people doubted whether it was worth the price.
Similarly, in July this year, milk tea brand Heytea (喜茶) and jewellery brand Chow Tai Fook (周大福) jointly launched a peach-flavored drink, which was mocked by Internet users as neither innovative nor tasty. They said that peaches had nothing to do with Chow Tai Fook, and that the drink was too sweet with not enough peaches.
“It’s important to maintain the high quality of the products in these partnerships rather than merely generate hype (炒作),” Li said.
4. What did Lin Wanqi think of the new Moutai-flavored latte
A. Bitter. B. Creamy. C. Smooth. D. Aromatic.
5. What does Li Honghui say about the partnership between Kweichow Moutai and Luckin Coffee
A. It is a win-win. B. It is creative yet risky.
C. It still needs more promotion. D. It sets a good example for the market.
6. Why did the collaboration between Manner Coffee and Louis Vuitton face criticism
A. The two brands were completely unrelated.
B. Their employees sold the gifts privately.
C The gifts were of low quality.
D. The promotional method was improper.
C
The ocean environment has been a heated topic of late. It was discussed and explored during World Water Week, held from Aug 20 to 24 in Stockholm, Sweden. During the week, Naomi Park from the US received the prestigious Stockholm Junior Water Prize 2023 for her research on the removal of carbon dioxide and oil products from the ocean, reported AFP News.
The ocean absorbs nearly a third of carbon dioxide emissions in the air, and 1.3 million gallons of crude oil are spilled into oceans every year, according to the Stockholm International Water Institute. Both issues continue to affect the biodiversity of the ocean and human health. In her research, Park developed a method to remove these contaminants.
Speaking on winning the prize, Park said it was a project she did in her high school. “I never realized that I would get to this point.”
The jury (评判委员会) noted that “the student created a ‘sponge (海绵)’ that absorbs both carbon dioxide and oil products from the ocean. She built a model and tested it — in multiple conditions, even simulating (模拟) ocean waves — with impressive results.”
For Park, her exploration of environmental sustainability is motivated by witnessing the local impacts of the climate crisis with her own eyes. “Seeing these changes in your community really makes you believe that the time for action is now,” she said.
Her next step may be to pursue a patent for the device. Andy Bramante, Park’s teacher and the science research director at Greenwich High School, said seeing young scientists develop their original ideas at this age is very exciting.
7. What did Park receive the Stockholm Junior Water Prize 2023 for
A. Her research on climate change. B. Her work on ocean biodiversity.
C. Her device for cleaning the ocean. D. Her experiment with ocean waves.
8. What does the underlined word “contaminants” most probably mean in the second paragraph
A. Pollutants. B. Advertisements. C. Opponents. D. Dilemmas.
9. How did Park feel about winning the prize
A. It was her high school ambition. B. It was beyond her expectations.
C. It was a result of her team’s efforts. D. It was the first step to apply for a patent.
10 What inspired Park to address environmental issues
A. Her desire for recognition. B. Her teacher’s encouragement.
C. Seeing changes in her local area. D. Learning about the value of the ocean.

At first Hasan tried to emotionally blackmail (要挟) his mother into not going, but after she promised to bring back his favorite toys and candies, he unwillingly let her go.
When he went to drop off his mother at the airport, he had teary eyes as he wondered how he was going to survive without her for the next two weeks. Although he felt like crying like a baby, he was too embarrassed to cry out loud. But when his father hugged him, Hasan couldn’t stop crying in his arms. When they returned home, Hasan, who had always been told by his mother what to do, now had no one to tell him to wash his hands or finish his dinner. Though he was very upset about his mother’s leaving, suddenly he also realized the potential for partying, away from his mother’s discipline (管教). There would be no checks or balances.

Though his father, grandmothers, uncles, aunts and cousins were all going to be there, it would be the first time for Hasan, a thoroughly pampered (娇生惯养的) child, to be without the constant mothering of his helicopter mother.
He could stay up late, eat junk food and use the Internet to his heart’s content.
Back from school, he would think, “Homework I’ll make the most of my freedom and have some fun instead!” Hasan started to stay up till he could no longer stay awake and then woke up with a lot of difficulty at seven in the morning, barely making it to school on time. But after a few days, his partying started catching up with him. In school, he was barely managing to stay awake. Things started getting out of control. His homework remained undone. He failed his tests. He felt weak from eating only junk food.

【答案】 One day, his teacher finally demanded to know what was going on with him. When Hasan told her things were not in good order because his mother was not in town, he was expecting a kind smile and sympathetic words. However, he got a wake-up talk from the teacher. “You are old enough to take care of yourself. It’s not your mother’s job to handle your schoolwork. You have to be responsible for your own attendance, homework, test preparation and so on.”
The teacher’s words sank into his brain and made sense to him. After Hasan went home, he ate a proper homemade dinner. Then, for the first time, he did his homework without anyone reminding him of it. He felt a sense of accomplishment. He went to bed early that evening and reached his school on time the next morning, where the teacher gave him a big smile and a thumbs-up. Hasan decided he was going to surprise his teacher, his mother and all of the others who cared for him by showing them he had grown up to be a responsible boy.
