When Drew Mascotti graduated from high school, he got a job delivering(送)pizzas. But soon he realized that it wasn’t what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. So he took a night class at a local tech school to see if welding(焊接)—which joins two metals together with heat—was a skill that “was going to stick.”
It did. Mascotti wanted to learn everything about welding and decided he’d make welding his career.
But one night class wouldn’t be enough. Mascotti went to Hobart Welding School in Ohio for real, technical training. Besides welding courses, Mascotti also took classes in subjects like metallurgy-the study of metal—and reading blueprints. He became more certain that he would stick to the job.

Mascotti’s favorite part of being a welder is “making an honest living”. He also takes pride in helping the environment. “I’m glad to stick to what I really want to do,” he says. “I’m working for a company that is helping the country to go green, and it’s satisfying to be a part of that process.”

Plants are more than just pretty to look at. They give us fruits, vegetables and food we eat. Some plants even provide materials for medicine or building things. But do you know that plants can do something even more amazing They can make our homes, schools and workplaces much healthier.
We spend a large part of our day indoors. Unluckily, the air inside buildings can often be full of chemicals(化学物质)from many things around us. This poor air quality(质量)can make us feel sick, causing sore eyes and throats, and even making it hard for us to breathe. When the air inside buildings gets really bad, people even call them “sick buildings”.
The good news is that plants are like nature’s little superheroes. They have a magic power fighting against bad air. Plants breathe in carbon dioxide (CO2) and breathe out oxygen (O2) which we humans need to live. They can also add moisture to the air if it’s too dry, making it more comfortable for us to breathe.
________ Scientists have discovered that plants have the ability to take in harmful chemicals, making the air around us safer to breathe. They set up a completely closed building called “bio-home” for experiments. Before they added plants, the air inside was full of chemicals and people found it hard to breathe. But after they added plants, the air got much cleaner and it became easier to breathe. To make the air inside even better, the scientists used different kinds of plants. After a while, the building wasn’t a “sick building” any more. People could go inside without feeling unwell.
So you see, plants are fantastic! They are not only beautiful to look at, but they also provide us with food, help create materials and play an important role in our health. They make our indoor environments cleaner and healthier, making us feel better. Next time you see a plant, remember all the amazing things it can do for us!

The scientific method is used for simple experiments that students may do in the classroom or very difficult experiments that scientists are doing all over the world. It is a way of thinking that helps you to avoid drawing incorrect conclusions.
There are usually four steps in the scientific method, including observation (观察), hypothesis (假设), experiment, and conclusion. The steps may not always be completed in the same order, but the first step is usually observation and asking a question about your observation. For example, you had a sick stomach, and ate a candy bar. An hour later, you observed that you felt much better. Here, you can ask a question, such as, “What makes a sick stomach feel better ”
The second step is to state a possible answer to the question, or a hypothesis, such as “” A good hypothesis includes three things: The explanation for the observations, it is able to be tested, and it will usually predict new outcomes or conclusions.
The third step is the experiment, to test the hypothesis. An experiment is a test which will either challenge or support the hypothesis. The hypothesis will then be true or false.
The final step is to think about what happened when you tested the hypothesis and draw a conclusion. The conclusion will either clearly support the hypothesis or it will not. If the results support the hypothesis, a conclusion can be written and you can share it with the rest of the world. If it does not support the hypothesis, you may choose to change the hypothesis or write a new one based on what was learned during the experiment.
13. Which sentence best expresses the main idea of the passage
A. How do the four basic steps in the scientific method work
B. What makes a good hypothesis based on the observation
C. The conclusion will always clearly support the hypothesis.
D. Learning the scientific method may help students succeed in science.
14. Which sentence should go in the empty box in Paragraph 3
A. A candy bar makes a sick stomach feel better.
B. It was the medicine you took an hour earlier that made you feel better.
C. Eat a candy bar again, and see what happens to your sick stomach.
D. Ask people if eating a candy bar has made a sick stomach feel better.
15 What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to (指的是)
A. The hypothesis. B. The conclusion. C. The question. D. The observation.
16. Which of the following sentences about the experiment is TRUE
A. An experiment is a test to always support the hypothesis.
B. An experiment does not have to be part of the scientific method.
C. An experiment is a test to either challenge or support a hypothesis.
D. An experiment is only used when scientists are trying to prove a hypothesis.
E
“If you are not fat, you must be a thin man. ” “For every minute of breathing, 60 seconds pass. ” “Why do you say I am lazy Obviously, I didn't do anything. ”
Nonsense Yes. These sentences look like they make sense, but they actually express little useful information. They are part of a recent Internet sentence-making craze called “nonsense literature(文学)”.
“Nonsense literature” was originally invented by Internet users to make fun of the empty, fussy(过分讲究的)and redundant(累赘的)writing style often used by media and some famous people. Like any good Internet joke, it became a popular word game. Plenty of “Nonsense literature” has been created. “Every time I don’t know what to say.” “Listening to your words is like listening to words. ”
Some even said that famous writers like Lu Xun used the style. For example, they said, Lu Xun once wrote: There are two trees in my backyard. One is a jujube(枣) tree, and the other is also a jujube tree.
Is it true Not really. Repetition in writing is not necessarily “Nonsense literature”. Lu Xun’s writing on the jujube trees comes from a piece of his articles. If you have read it, as well as understanding his time of writing, you’d find these repeated lines are powerful, showing that the writer was frustrated(挫败)by social reality.
Actually, “Nonsense literature” and “literature” are two incompatible(矛盾的)words. Nonsense is silly and useless. It will soon be forgotten. But literature is written work considered to have artistic value. It is a spiritual treasure worth passing down.
Internet crazes like “Nonsense literature” might make you laugh for a while. ______. Don’t throw yourself into it. Read some real literature. It will help us stop talking nonsense.
17.The writer of the passage leads in the topic by ______.
A.telling a story B.giving examples
C.analyzing facts D.making a dialogue
18.According to the passage, which of the following sentences is not nonsense
A.“Every time I don’t know what to say.”
B.“Listening to your words is like listening to words.”
C.“Why do you say I am lazy, obviously I didn’t do anything.”
D.“There are two trees in my backyard. One is a jujube tree, and the other is also a jujube tree. ”
19.Which of the following sentences can be put in the _______ in Para. 7
A.But they will soon disappear B.And they will be passed down
C.But they are really bad for you D.So they are necessary in our daily life
20.What’s the writer’s opinion about “nonsense literature”
A.It will always be popular. B.It tells little useful information.
C.It is a kind of word game. D.It was originally invented by Internet users.

A woman stood at the window of an expensive shop. After standing there for a few minutes, she finally went into the shop and asked the shopkeeper to show her one dress. The shopkeeper thought the woman was not rich enough to pay for that dress, so she said the dress was sold out. The woman walked out of the shop angrily and decided to punish the shopkeeper. The next morning, she returned to the shop in a very beautiful dress and with a nice handbag in her hand. She asked for the same dress. Not knowing the woman had come before, this time the shopkeeper hurried to climb into the shop window to get the dress. As soon as she saw it, the woman said she did not like it and asked for another one. So the shopkeeper had to climb once again. The woman enjoyed making the shopkeeper get down nearly everything in the window. Finally, she bought the first dress.
