In a world where acts of kindness often go unnoticed, a good story that has been discovered reminds us of the power of care and the effect it can have on someone’s life.
It all started with a “Kindness Week Challenge” given to Brennan by his 8th-grade teacher, Ms. Watkins. Little did he know that this challenge would lead to a wonderful friendship with 84-year-old Ms. Ann.
Brennan’s promise to send his little attractive things every day for a week developed a habit of checking up on Ms. Ann and sending gifts regularly(定期地), long after the challenge was over.
Their friendship has now lasted for over five years, and Brennan still visits Ms. Ann every month with flowers, cakes, chocolates, cards and more.
They talk about everything from his high school life to his college goals. The pair has found that they share a common love of chocolates. Ms. Ann always hopes to hear about what he’s doing and loves to share her own stories from a different time. They have become the best friends, with Brennan treating her as his great-grandmother.
Brennan’s mom, Traci, takes pride in her son. She said, “The best thing a teenager can do is to take care of the elderly. I’m so glad my son has added more sunshine to Ms. Ann’s life. I hope he always remembers the joy he’s brought her, and his fun talks with her, keeps his kind heart, and thinks of others.”
Ms. Ann’s daughter Emma, with her husband Gould, has a 2-year-old son. They are thankful for Brennan’s friendship as they cannot always be with Ms. Ann. Brennan’s kind heart has brought more sunshine into Ms. Ann’s life, and her encouraging words have helped to inspire(启发)him in return.

Volunteering is something that is usually not at the top of young people’s lists. But with a little bit of a push from student organizations and nonprofit organizations, volunteerism and community change can start to take a huge lead. They become not just something that will look good on a resume (简历) or college application, but a first concern and a learning experience for the young.
I did a considerable amount of community work during my summer breaks. A few times I would go down to the church and help with the sorting and handing out of canned foods to the homeless. The ragged (破旧的) cloth and the look of upset printed on the faces of the people I handed food to reminded me of the hard realities of our society today, and the difficulty many people face in achieving their self-worth. I was also reminded of the fact that the statistics we hear every day about homelessness are real people-not just numbers. The largest percentage of people who are homeless is in fact, not the men on the street, but families: mothers, children of all ages, and fathers.
The most important thing I’ve learned from my volunteer experiences is that people are not powerless; as a matter of fact, we have a great deal of potential (潜力). I learned how exciting it is to realize how much fun you have in your own life and how beautiful it is to share that with others and hoped that they will discover it themselves. I learned how giving human beings are, even when they don’t have much to give. These are important to help us open doors of understanding and take time to actively listen and communicate with our community members.
The relationship between young people and nonprofit organizations can be the start of a great change in the community and should be a very powerful educational experience. An open-minded and promising flow of communication between organizations and community members can be the start of social and environmental change. Together, we can make the change.
28.What can we learn about volunteering from the first paragraph
A.It deserves to be taken seriously. B.It is more important than grades.

D.The amazingly large number of the homeless.
30.What does the author think is important to have community under-standing
A.Supporting each other with financial giving.
B.Developing our potential to discover beauty.
C.Knowing our ability to share fun with others.
D.Taking time to solve neighborhood problems.
31.What’s the author’s probable purpose in writing the text
A.To call on the young to volunteer.
B.To share his volunteer experiences.
C.To explain the benefits of volunteering.
D.To introduce suitable community work

On Saturday 24 August 1918, it was raining cats and dogs and thundering over a city called Sunderland on the northeast coast of England. The storm lasted for only about ten minutes. People were surprised to see that it was not just rainwater falling from the sky. There were fish falling down, too! People came out to find out what was happening. They could not believe their own eyes. There were thousands of fish—sand eels (沙鳗)—lying on the ground. They were about seven centimeters long, and all were frozen solid
Sand eels swim together in large groups, often in sandy water, and are often found in large numbers in the North Sea, which reaches out to the east of Sunderland. How was it possible for these sand eels to fall from the sky and land on Sunderland
Scientists believed the heavy thunderstorm that afternoon may have caused a waterspout (水龙卷). Waterspouts can be formed when strong winds move quickly in a circle over water. They are so powerful that anything less than one meter in length can be taken into them and forced into the clouds. The clouds carry whatever has been taken into them for long distances —sometimes over 150 kilometers. It’s very cold up there and everything soon freezes solid.
For hundreds of years there have been reports of small animals being taken into the sky through waterspouts. In 2009, dead tadpoles rained down on the city of Nanao in Japan. In 2012, fifty kilos of prawns fell from the sky over Sri Lanka. In 2017, fish fell on the coastal city of Tampico in Mexico.
It must be a very strange experience to see fish raining down on you. It would probably hurt if one fell on your head! With climate (气候) change and many reports of terrible storms, will the time ever come when it may really begin to rain cats and dogs
32.What do we know about the sand eels that landed on Sunderland
A.They were few in number. B.They came in different sizes.
C.They were still alive when landing. D.They probably came from the North Sea.

A.raining sea animals is not new in history
B.the environment is not pleasant in Japan
C.waterspouts can reach as far as Japan
D.different animals can fall in different countries
35.In the end, what does the author probably care most about
A.Our health. B.Our environment. C.The wild animals. D.The news reports.

I couldn’t forget the way I was frozen in front of the class today. My teacher, Mr. Liu had divided the class into groups to do speeches. Today was my turn. However, my hands shook so badly that I couldn’t read my notes. My voice became softer even to silence. Mr. Liu kindly ended my part of speech even though I clearly didn’t finish. He also asked me to stay after class for a moment.
“Betty, I know you are shy, but you worked so hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Mr. Liu said, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find courage ” I nodded, grateful for the chance. I went as quickly as I could to my next class, keeping my head down and hoping the school day would end soon.
When I reached home that afternoon, I could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Mum was baking(烘焙). She studied my face as I came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Betty ”
Tears shone in my eyes. I told her the whole story. Mum was silent for a moment with her hands busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything but you can’t talk to your class ” Mum asked. She set the time right and then said, “Let me show you something.”
I followed her to the bedroom. There she showed me a book filled with pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon(丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first—not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my tears. You just need to find your courage.”

Waterspouts can be formed when strong winds move quickly in a circle over water.(科学家认为,当天下午的强雷暴可能导致了水龙卷。当强风在水面上快速旋转时,就会形成水龙卷)”以及划线词所在句“They are so powerful that anything less than one meter in length can be taken into them and forced into the clouds.”
根据第四段“For hundreds of years there have been reports of small animals being taken into the sky through waterspouts. In 2009, dead tadpoles rained down on the city of Nanao in Japan. In 2012, fifty kilos of prawns fell from the sky over Sri Lanka. In 2017, fish fell on the coastal city of Tampico in Mexico.(数百年来,一直有关于小动物通过水龙卷被带向天空的报道。2009年,死蝌蚪如雨点般落在日本七尾市。2012年,50公斤的对虾从斯里兰卡上空坠落。2017年,鱼落在了墨西哥沿海城市坦皮科)”可知,第四段为总分结构,第一句为主题句,说明了历史上有很多类似于前文提到的下雨带来动物的报道,这在历史上并不新鲜。故选A。
根据最后一段“It would probably hurt if one fell on your head! With climate (气候) change and many reports of terrible storms, will the time ever come when it may really begin to rain cats and dogs (如果有一颗落在你头上,可能会很疼!随着气候的变化和许多可怕风暴的报道,真的会有大雨倾盆的时候吗?)”可知,作者用与英文谚语 it was raining cats and dogs相关的表述it may really begin to rain cats and dogs,含蓄地表达了作者对目前环境的担忧。

36.上一句“A famous health tip says you’d better drink eight glasses of water (about two liters) a day.(一个著名的健康提示说你最好每天喝八杯水(大约两升))”以及后文“An international group led by scientists at the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology in China found that the average daily water intake of a man in his 20s should be 1.5 to 1.8 liters(由中国深圳先进技术研究院的科学家领导的一个国际研究小组发现,20多岁的男性平均每天的饮水量应该是1.5到1.8升)”可知,上下文语意间为转折关系,实际上并不需要摄入那么多的水。
37.上一句“An international group led by scientists at the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology in China found that the average daily water intake of a man in his 20s should be 1.5 to 1.8 liters(由中国深圳先进技术研究院的科学家领导的一个国际研究小组发现,20多岁的男性平均每天的饮水量应该是1.5到1.8升)”与E项“while it should be 1.3 to 1.4 liters for a female in the same age group(而同一年龄组的女性应该是1.3到1.4升)”同为研究对象中的两种不同人群的摄入水量的对比。
38.根据上文“The researchers investigated 5,604 participants from the ages of 8 days to 96 years, and from more than 20 countries, using special tracking methods. They have found that a man aged 20 to 35 consumes 4.2 liters of water each day, but a woman aged 30 to 60 consumes 3.3 liters(研究人员使用特殊的跟踪方法调查了来自20多个国家的5604名年龄在8天到96岁之间的参与者。他们发现,20至35岁的男性每天消耗4.2升水,而30至60岁的女性每天消耗3.3升水)”可知,调查结果表明,30-60岁的女性比年龄比她们小的男性消耗的水量少。故B选项“随着他或她年龄的增长,对水的需求减少”符合语境,故选B。
39.根据上一句“Since the metabolism (新陈代谢) and water exchange on skin can provide 15 percent, while food and drinking respectively contributing half of the remaining 85 percent (由于皮肤上的新陈代谢和水交换可以提供15%,而食物和饮水分别贡献了其余85%的一半)”可知,本句与上文构成因果关系,指出我们皮肤的新陈代谢和我们所摄入的水和食物已经给我们提供了一部分水,故A选项“建议人们饮水量不超过每日总量的45%”符合语境,故选A。
40.根据后文“including body size, physical activity, air temperature, humidity and altitude, according to the study(包括身体大小、身体活动、空气温度、湿度和海拔高度)”可知,这些都是影响摄入水量的因素,故F选项“总水量的输入和输出根据多种因素而变化”符合语境,故选F。

作文
Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m Li Hua, a senior 2 student in our city. Knowing the museum is recruiting volunteer interpreters during the summer holiday, I am writing to apply for the post advertised on the internet.
I am convinced I have the right qualifications for it. For one thing, with fluent oral English, I have no difficulty in communicating with foreign visitors. For another, not only am I familiar with the history and traditions of our city, but also I have strong affection for them, which enables me to provide visitors with more professional service. In all, I feel proud to promote and spread our fine culture.
Should you take my application into consideration and give me a chance, I would be grateful. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

47. Hearing Mum’s words, I stared at the valuable blue ribbon, lost in thought. What was it that made me so afraid But still no answer came out. Soon the cake was finished. We went back to the kitchen for the baked cake. Mum cut a slice for the sweet cake and handed it to me, saying, “You can make it.” I raised the warm cake to my mouth. It was so delicious and fragrant. Suddenly I knew where I could find my courage. It was from my mum’s love.
The next day I walked to the front of the classroom to give my speech. Seeing the quiet classroom, I couldn’t help but feel nervous again, my mind going blind and my voice trembling. Then I saw the blue ribbon which my mum tied to my wrist. I thought of Mum’s warm cake, her love and her inspiring experience. Then I took a deep breath and gave my speech with confidence. This time there was no fear any more but a big success and a round of applause.
