I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school’s community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all.
4. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph
A. His good grades got him a good job.
B. He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely.
C. His views on social values are well known.
D. He is content with his scholastic achievements.
5. Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship
A. A helper. B. A judge. C. A monitor D. A supporter.
6. What is the greatest accomplishment for the author
A. The contribution to volunteering. B. The success in exams.
C. The recovery of confidence in life. D. The work in community service.
7. Why does the author want to major in social work at university
A. To gain a well-paid job. B. To give his life a purpose.
C. To meet his grandparents’ expectations. D. To better help the disadvantaged.

It can be incredibly difficult to encourage ourselves to go for a run during winter particularly when it’s wet and windy outside. But new research has found that even a super-quick run could have great health benefits. In fact, it seems that just a 10-minute session will not only make us feel better, but could actually improve brain health, too. Now, we all know that exercise can improve mental and physical health in many ways.
But when it comes to mental well-being there’s been relatively little research done on the specific benefits of running, compared with other physical activities, such as cycling. So this was something put to the test during a recent study. Researchers from University of Tsukuba in Japan asked participants (参加者) to run on a treadmill (跑步机) for just 10 minutes. They then had to take a Stroop Color and Word Test which is used to measure reaction time in brain processing. Results showed there was a highest point in self-reported pleasure and an increase in degree of activity of the brain.
In other words, runners were found to have an increase in blood flow in the part of the brain that’s associated with dealing with functions and controlling mood (情绪). Researchers then compared these results to a similar study on cycling, which also showed improved cognition (认知), but no mood improvement. Therefore, it seems various types of exercise can make us feel differently.
The authors noted, “Given exercise is medicine, the effects of drugs differ depending on the type of drug, and different types of exercise such as running and cycling should be observed to have different effects on mental health and brain functions as well.”
So pushing ourselves to get outside for a run really will make us feel better, probably more than other fitness activities. And these findings show that we don’t necessarily need to do a lot of exercise to feel the benefit of it.
8. What did the new research find
A. Running fast benefits all of us.
B. Running is the best exercise.
C. A short time run can be beneficial.
D. A healthy mind encourages us to run.
9. How did the researchers get the result
A. By using different drugs on participants.
B. By interviewing some sportsmen.
C. By collecting information on the Internet.
D. By doing experiments and comparisons.
10. Which is related to our happiness
A. Cycling. B. Medicine. C. Blood flow. D. Colors.
11. What is the main idea of the text
A. We should go for a run in winter.
B. Running really benefits us mentally.
C. We don’t need a lot of exercise.
D. Running on a treadmill is better than running outside.
D
"Long time no see." is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend's e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.
Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation of the Chinese greeting with wrong English grammar and structure! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to believe her. Her words were unbelievable at all. So I did research on . To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing "Long time no see." Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Interestingly, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.
Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan's movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective named "Charlie Chan" on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius. "Long time no see." was his symbol. Soon after Charlie Chan, "Long time no see." became a popular expression in America thanks to the popularity of these movies.
Some scholars compare America to a huge melting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together, and they change the colour and taste of each other. Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed pot.
You can have some examples from other countries, such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Since Americans admire Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way, the American's melting pot keeps adding richness and flavour.
12. What did the writer himself feel surprised at
A. The Chinglish expression "Long time no see."
B. So many literal translations of the expressions used in America.
C. "Long time no see." is used as a standard American English greeting.
D. Finding out Americans use the expression every day.
13 What do the underlined words "melting pot" in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Confucius's words. B. Culture mixture.
C. A kind of cooked dish. D. American changing cultures.
14. According to the passage, what can be inferred
A. Detectives translated the phrase "Long time no see."
B. Cultures cannot be changed in the huge melting pot.
C. The huge melting pot greatly affects all kinds of languages.
D. Hollywood made "Long time no see." popular.
15. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Some Chinese expressions are introduced into English.
B. You'll not be surprised at a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant in America.
C. Some American expressions can be used in China.
D. American English keeps being enriched by different cultures.

Sadie looked out of the window and sighed (叹气) as she thought about another long, boring day of summer. She wondered what all of her friends from school were doing on their summer vacations. It had to be a lot better than looking out of a window. Sadie thought about the fun she had last summer when she and her best friend Allison went to the beach. They built sandcastles, played beach volleyball, and even tried surfing. But they wouldn’t be going to the beach together this summer because Allison had moved to a different city far away from Sadie’s.
Suddenly, Sadie had an idea. She could call her friend Wendy, who always had funny ideas. Maybe they could ride their bikes together around the park. Sadie raced to the living room, picked up the phone, and called Wendy. She sighed more deeply as the phone rang and rang. Then Sadie seated herself on the sofa, picked up the television remote, and put it down again. She didn’t really want to watch television, so she went to her room and found the list of phone numbers of her good friends from school. In the living room, she called almost each of them, but no one was at home.
After hanging up the phone, Sadie wandered into the kitchen and sat down at the table, watching her mom do the cleaning. “Mom, I don’t have anyone to hang out with because my friends from school aren’t home and Allison moved away,” said Sadie. “Honey, there are many things you can do by yourself, like playing your guitar or having a walk in the garden. You could even finish that story about our camping trip,” said Mom.
“I don’t want to do those things by myself. I want to play with a friend.” “Sometimes, it is nice to do things by yourself,” said Mom. “I like seeing my friends, but I also like doing things alone like taking a walk by myself or finding a quiet spot to read. Why not have a try ”

You can have some examples from other countries such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc.
13. What do the underlined words "melting pot" in Paragraph 4 probably mean

Sadie decided to go outside for a breath of fresh air. With her mom's permission, she got on her bike and rode slowly down the sidewalk. It felt great! Much to her surprise, scenery along the path was breathtaking, which used to escape her notice when she hung out with friends.
As she rode back home, Sadie ran toward her mom excitedly. “Did you find someone to play with outside ” Mom asked. “No, I took your advice. I rode my bike by myself.” Wendy called back while you were outside, asking you to go swimming tonight. You will have a happy evening,” Sadie's mom said. “Well, I think I will finish my story instead. I can go swimming with her another day,” Sadie said with a wink. “And it's indeed very different and surprising to do things alone.”
