The tomato leaf miner moth (潜叶蛾) originates from Peru and is common throughout South America. However, it has spread through Europe since 2007 and has become one of the largest pests in Mediterranean regions, threatening food supplies. Experts around the world are currently struggling with new ways to battle the moth, but it has developed resistance to pesticides (杀虫剂), leaving farmers helpless to stop the damage. A new study from the University of Portsmouth has shown that the answer may lie in the tropical tent web spider.
Scientists carried out laboratory tests and found that the spiders banded together to form webs that easily caught the flying insects, which they then ate. Dr Lena Grinsted, the lead author of the study, said, “The tropical tent web spiders operate in large groups and can create giant joined-up webs capable of catching insects in the air. This could potentially lead to a reduction of reliance on chemical pesticides, resulting in less pollution in soils, waterways and food chains in the future.”
Crop damage is also caused by the larvae (幼虫), which directly attack the tomato fruit, making the crop ugly and thus unmarketable. Larvae live inside the leaf until they begin the process of turning into a moth, making them difficult to control. However, scientists expect that targeting the adult moth population will reduce the number of eggs being laid. In addition, the spiders build the biggest webs during the summer, which can benefit the tomato planting and growing season in May and June.
The researchers said the study would “open doors for the use of group-living spiders to control agricultural pests” but warned that more work was needed to check the spiders did not change the ecology of regions. “Future studies are needed to investigate whether the spiders may negatively impact crop pollination (传粉) by also catching bees and other key pollinators.” Dr Grinsted added.
24. Why is it difficult to get rid of the moth according to paragraph 1
A. It is large in size. B. It is drug-resistant.
C. It spreads too quickly. D. It threatens food supplies.
25. What made using the spiders to control pests possible
A. Their ability to weave huge webs.
B. Their importance in the food chain.
C. The effect of chemical pesticides on soil.
D. The cost reduction of building waterways.
26. What is Dr Grinsted’s attitude towards the new pest-control project
A. Optimistic. B. Indifferent. C. Cautious. D. Disapproving.
27. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Moths: The Biggest Threat to Crops
B. Spiders: The Insect-Catching Lovers
C. Moths: A Headache for Modern Agriculture
D. Spiders: An Eco-friendly Alternative to Drugs

A recent study in Japan has revealed that a wearable soft robot, named Reliebo, can improve the experience of patients in medical treatments, such as injections (注射) and other unpleasant therapies. The purpose of the robot is to help ease pain and defend people against anxiety. The study, led by researchers at the University of Tsukuba, was inspired in part by the numerous needles people had to endure while being vaccinated (接种疫苗) against COVID-19. Some people felt an intense dislike for these needles, which led to fewer people getting vaccinated.
The robot is soft and covered in fur. It contains small airbags internally that inflate (膨胀) in response to hand movement. Participants in the study who wore the robot while subjected to a medium heat stimulation, experienced less pain in the test than those who did not wear the robot. The test proved that the pain and anxiety being felt could be reduced sharply by lessening the experience of pain through using the robot.
The research team checked the effectiveness of the wearable robot while being handled by participants under certain conditions, based on the clenching (攥紧) of the hand. The team placed painful heat stimulation on the other arm that was not holding the robot. They then measured cortisol levels from the participants’ saliva (唾液) samples, suggesting levels of stress hormones.
The pain felt by the patients was given specific ratings and was also recorded using an assessment scale. The people in the study were given a survey test to assess their fear of injections before and after the experiment with the wearable robot was completed.
The study proved that holding the robot can ease the experience of patients who were receiving injections. The research team hopes to use this study to advance the robot for use during painful situations. such as getting medical shots or similar conditions.
28. What is the function of the robot
A. To assist doctors in injecting accurately.
B. To help relieve people’s pain from injections.
C. To assess patients’ physical and mental health.
D. To check the effects of vaccination against diseases.
29. What does the underlined word “lessening” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Detecting. B. Increasing. C. Recording. D. Decreasing.
30. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. Methods of reducing people’s fear of injections.
B. Reasons for conducting experiments on the robot.
C. The process of testing the effectiveness of the robot.
D. The advantages of the new robot in the medical field.
31. What will researchers hope to do next
A. Apply the robot in more similar situations.
B. Evaluate the disadvantages of using the robot.
C. Do experiments on different groups of people.
D. Develop other devices for medical treatment.

As AI art generators take the world by storm, some people wonder if their works should count as art at all. The technology is still developing and has some wrinkles to iron out (消除), which means there are indeed flaws to consider alongside the incredible artwork a good artificial intelligence can produce.
Art is classed as the product of imagination, skill, experience, and emotion, usually meant to represent something for the public to enjoy. Artists spent time and effort putting their inner worlds onto these works. Machine intelligence also puts a lot of work into sorting through tons of data, linking someone’s prompt (指令) to datasets, and trying to represent it as best as possible. The difference is that the AI is driven by commands instead of an emotional desire to express itself.
AI painters can produce over 1,000 original works of art with every tap of the enter key on a keyboard. But a mass-produced print of the Mona Lisa is worth less than the actual Leonardo da Vinci’s painting. Why Scarcity — there’s only one of the original. Should anyone pay for these things And if an artist puts AI masterpieces up for sale, what should the price be
AI art involves a program mimicking (模仿) the work of existing artists to create a new piece according to the request of a human. But who made the artwork, the machine or its user And can the original artists sue for (控告) copyright violation Such questions complicate the merging of artificial intelligence and the art industry, while fueling arguments against recognizing AI-generated art as marketable artistic products.
Once we’ve answered those questions, we can tackle the really big one: When an AI-generated painting wins an award, who gets the prize
32. How is Al art different from human art
A. It is the product of experience.
B. It combines different styles of work.
C. It is not a mirror of artists’ emotions.
D. It doesn’t cost much money to produce.
33. Why does the writer mention Mona Lisa in paragraph 3
A. To present the potential trouble with the value of Al art.
B. To introduce a new way of preserving art masterpieces.
C. To show the advantages of Al painters over human artists.
D. To prove the popularity of classic artworks among viewers.
34. What can we infer from paragraph 4
A. AI art promotes the sale of artistic products.
B. AI art makes copyright issues more complicated.
C. Artists can create more works with the help of AI.
D. There will be fierce competition in the art industry.
35. What is the purpose of the text
A. To persuade. B. To inform. C. To describe. D. To argue.

As university doors opened in September for a new year, an estimated six million people across the world took to the streets in a historic week of climate action. For freshers starting a new chapter at university, deciding how to live your life is vital. 36
What you put on your plate matters. Meat and dairy consumption results in excessive (过度的) land use, industrial emissions, water use and deforestation. 37 Therefore, a meat-free diet has been recommended as the “single-biggest way” an individual can reduce their impact on the planet.
38 Keeping your clothes for as long as possible has more than just monetary value. In the UK, clothing has the fourth-largest environmental impact after housing, transport and food. So recycle your clothes or mend them.
Change your habits. 39 There are simple ways you can change your habits to live sustainably. Wash your clothes at a lower temperature, and choose a bamboo toothbrush or more eco-friendly sanitary (卫生的) products. If you’re planning a weekend away with friends, try to travel by train or bus.
Individual actions matter, as they demonstrate commitment and provide an alternative to how we can live. But campaigning is important, too. 40 If you don’t know where or how to start, see if there are any societies at your university. Students of the Fossil Free campaign, for example, have brought on huge changes by calling on their institutions to stop using fossil fuels.
A. Forget fast fashion.
B. Behave yourself in public.
C. While shopping, turn up with your own container.
D. University campus can be a perfect place for this.
E. Cutting out meat is an easy way to reduce your carbon footprint.
F. Here are some ideas about how you can be sustainable as a student.
G. For freshers, living alone means doing your own washing, cooking and cleaning.

“Why she let out my secret Why she did that to me ” I vividly remembered that day when I was confused at the knowing looks everyone gave me. That terrible experience was impressed on my mind. I couldn’t forgive the person with whom I had shared my secret. She lost all my trust and friendship.
Five years back, Sally was a new addition in my class. I didn’t know what but there was something sticky about her that attracted me towards her. She was the most friendly person I knew. We started as classmates but after a few months, we were like best friends. We did homework together and dreamed of going to the same university one day. We hung out and went to the movies on weekends. That was a sweet time.
Nevertheless, I couldn’t expect such an enormous betrayal (背叛) from her. I didn’t know what made me tell Sally about my personal life. I felt much regret to myself. She exaggerated (夸大) the matter, added her own spices to it and made it the hottest topic in school. It was like someone had stabbed (戮) a knife in my back. After she let out my secret, everyone at school started laughing at me and gazing at me wherever I passed. I was like a pond in which someone had thrown a stone and it had been spilled up. It was the most embarrassing time I had gone through. Soon afterwards. I left school and shifted to another one because I thought no one had the right to laugh at me. Sally called me many times, but I didn’t answer. My heart was broken because the person whom I trusted most cheated me.
I made efforts to remove the scar from my heart. I started a new life, leaving all the bad memories behind because they made me a person who often thought about the past experiences. Five years later, with the life going on, I met new friends and seldom thought about the past.

But one day I met Anna, my former classmate, in the market, who told me shocking news. Anna said that after I left school, Sally was sad for a long time. She also told me that Sally was not the one who brought my secret to others. It was Mary who happened to overhear my conversation with Sally and shared it with others. I was at sea, feeling that the floor had slipped away beneath my feet. Anxious and regretful, I asked Anna for any contact with Sally.
I immediately called Sally in order to explain the misunderstanding. After getting through, I sincerely apologized to her. She said softly, “Never mind. We are good friends.” I was in tears, full of guilty and joy. At that moment, I wished time could go back and I could overcome my mistake. From that I got a lesson in my life that we should learn to trust our loved ones, because a little mistake can lead us to ruin what we should value. We need to be open and trust our friends.

W: Everything went wrong. I couldn’t find my mobile phone and then one of the heels of my black shoes broke off. That’s why I’m wearing my sports shoes. I didn’t want to, because they’re really dirty. I didn’t have time to clean them after my last run. And they don’t match my coat at all.

W: We’ll need delivery drivers.
M: Ben said he’d be happy to do it at first. If we need more people, we can hire some.
W: How about the packaging
M: I’ve got that covered. I increased the order for leftovers packaging.
W: That’s perfect then!
M: Umm, I’ll handle the scheduling to make room for the deliveries. Do you want to add anything to the menu before we finalize it
W: How about a deal for repeat customers It’ll be good for repeat customer loyalty, and it’ll be another selling point for marketing. I’ll add it to our website.

M: I’d always enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together again since I was a child, so when I left school, I decided to become a mechanic. I studied hard and eventually got my qualifications and started working.
First, I worked mostly on cars and vehicles, but after getting bored of my town and longing for adventure I decided that I wanted to try something new. I decided to apply for a position as a mechanic on a ship.
It was a big change, but I was excited. I learnt a lot about the different systems on the ship and how to keep them running. It was a challenge and so different from before, I struggled at first but I enjoyed it once I got used to it. I felt a great sense of satisfaction when I fixed things.
The crew were all very helpful and it was a great experience. I travelled all over the world and saw some amazing places. I completed my work and travelled. I learnt a lot about the different cultures and was able to use the skills I learnt in my training. Eventually, I returned to my country and started my own repair shop.

根据文章第二段内容“The tropical tent web spiders operate in large groups and can create giant joined-up webs capable of catching insects in the air.”
Grinsted所说的话“Future studies are needed to investigate whether the spiders may negatively impact crop pollination (传粉) by also catching bees and other key pollinators.”
综观全文可知,尤其是第一段最后一句话“A new study from the University of Portsmouth has shown that the answer may lie in the tropical tent web spider.”和第二段最后一句“This could potentially lead to a reduction of reliance on chemical pesticides, resulting in less pollution in soils, waterways and food chains in the future.”
根据文章第一段第二句话“The purpose of the robot is to help ease pain and defend people against anxiety.”
根据本句“The test proved that the pain and anxiety being felt could be reduced sharply by lessening the experience of pain through using the robot.”

根据文章第四段内容“But who made the artwork, the machine or its user And can the original artists sue for (控告) copyright violation Such questions complicate the merging of artificial intelligence and the art industry, while fueling arguments against recognizing AI-generated art as marketable artistic products.”
