In the late 1990s, a family visited the school where I taught deaf students. They said they would be moving here and planned to send their deaf daughter to my school as a first grader. They were upset that their child’s kindergarten teacher told them not to have high hopes for her academically. Based upon assessment results, the teacher painted a bleak picture for their little girl’s future. Standing behind them was Katherine, a beautiful five-year-old with long hair and dark eyes. The whole time her parents were there, and she didn’t make a sound or use sign language, even when her parents prompted her.
After a few weeks with Katherine, I discovered I was dealing with a very bright, very strong-willed child. Although I was able to engage her in a variety of learning activities, writing was a constant struggle. I tried all kinds of trickery to interest her in writing. Every time the pencils came out, she would shut down and refuse to write.
One day Katherine got off her bus and stood in front of the school wailing. The staff members present did not know enough sign language to ask her why she was crying. Finally they quickly took her into the office where they handed her a pen and a notepad. Katherine wrote: “PAC BAK.”. Immediately the office staff realized she left her backpack on the bus. They summoned (召唤) the bus back to school and soon Katherine was reunited with her backpack.
That day Katherine discovered the power of the pen. From then on she had a new appreciation for writing. She is a young woman now and has become an excellent writer, public speaker and student leader. In the summer of 2008 I traveled to the National Association of the Deaf Conference in New Orleans and watched her perform competitively as Miss Deaf Colorado. Kathy keeps in touch and I especially treasure her e-mails with term papers attached. This young lady wields a very powerful pen!
4. Why was Katherine arranged to the author’s school
A. Katherine likes various activities.
B. Her family settled in a new place.

7. What does the author want to show by telling the story in Paragraph 3
A. How Katherine found her backpack.
B. What a kind group the staff were!
C. Why Katherine could make a change.
D. Where her backpack was found.

Under normal circumstances, falling asleep during a paid tour is a waste of money or an offense to your guide at worst. But that’s not the case with this new experience coming out of Hong Kong. As its name suggests, the Sleeping Bus Tour is designed to help passengers catch some sleep, and rides are already selling out.
A 2022 survey by the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Center of Communication and Public Opinion notes almost 70% respondents experiences some form of sleep disorder. Hong Kongers have much stress from work and need a space for sleeping, but their living spaces are too small. Some may not live alone and have to share apartments with their family, which may not be a good environment for a proper rest.
After noticing passengers falling asleep on their buses, the Hong Kong tour company, Ulu Travel Agency, recently launched such an innovative way for adults to sleep: the Sleeping Bus Tour. The five-hour bus ride takes passengers on an 83-kilometer(about 51.5 miles)journey aboard a regular double decker bus. Not only is the Sleeping Bus Tour the first of its kind, it’s also the longest bus route in Hong Kong, ensuring that tired passengers have plenty of time to enjoy some sleep.
Once passengers board the bus, they are treated with a goodie bag complete with an eye mask and earplugs to help them sleep and they are allowed to bring their own blankets and slippers. The long ride includes a few stops for scenic spots and bathroom breaks. Passengers can also get off the bus early at one of several drop-off points if they’d prefer to continue their sleep at home rather than complete the entire journey. Tickets for the Sleeping Bus Tour are divided in four categories from the “Zero-decibel(分贝)Sleeping Cabin“ to the ”VIP Cabin.” Prices range from about $17 USD to S115 USD per person. For more information on this unique experience, head to the Ulu travel company website.

A. Hongkongers desire to live alone. B. Hongkongers can afford paid tours.
C. Hongkongers are under extreme stress. D. Most Hongkongers have trouble sleeping.
9. Why was the Sleeping Bus Tour launched
A. To improve the sleeping habits. B. To make more profits.
C. To reduce the stress from extra work. D. To help adult passengers rest properly.
10. What can a passenger get from the Sleeping Bus Tour

People with dementia (痴呆) often lose their ability to communicate with beloved ones in later stages of the disease. But a new study shows how that gap can be bridged with a new method of music involvement, called “Musical Bridges to Memory”.
In the study, people with dementia and their care partners first had training in how to communicate better with music on. After this, a group of musicians played music that a patient loved from his younger days. This created an emotional connection between a patient and his caregiver by allowing them to get involved in singing, dancing and playing simple instruments. The behavior of the patients and caregivers was recorded on video.
A group conversation followed the music. Patients who became more socially involved were found to have more eye contact, more concentration and an improved mood. In comparison, the control group, who did not receive the special treatment and kept usual daily care and programs, did not show such changes.
The study is unusual because it is aimed at patients with dementia and their caregivers. Most previous studies using music for patients with dementia have focused only on the patients. “Patients are able to be connected with partners through music” said Dr. Borna Bonakdarpour, lead author of the study. “The family and friends of people with dementia are also influenced by it. It’s painful for them when they can’t connect with the person they love. When language is no longer possible, music gives them a bridge.”
Music memories often remain in the brain even as language and other memories disappear because of dementia. This is because regions of the brain that are involved in musical memory are not influenced by dementia until the final stages of the disease. Thus, patients can have the ability to dance and sing long after their ability to talk disappear. The program also improved patients social involvement and reduced anxiety in both patients and caregivers.
12. What were the patients in the study encouraged to do
A. Watch music videos together with caregivers.
B. Talk with musicians about their younger days.
C. Join in the performance of their beloved music.
D. Learn to remember words in their favorite songs.
13. What change did the patients have after the music treatment
A. Their language ability greatly improved.
B. They could perform simple daily activities.
C. Their communication with others became active.
D. They showed an interest in learning an instrument.
14. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the study
A. It is special due to the group conversation.
B. It will help connect patients with their loved ones.
C. It is the first to use music as a medical treatment.
D. It invites patients’ family members to be their caregivers.
15. Why can music play a role in dealing with dementia
A. People enjoy singing and dancing by nature.
B. Music is easier to understand than language.
C. Beautiful songs can bring back happy memories.
D. Dementia seldom influences brain regions related to music.

Dad and Madison were walking through the party store, gathering decorations for Madison’s upcoming birthday party.
“But I don’t want to invite Lucy Gilbert! I don’t like her!”
“Madison, you are being unreasonable. If every girl in your class is invited to a party but you, you’ll feel left out. It would be a big mistake not toinvite Lucy to the party. ”“She never even talks to me! ”
Dad sighed and moved down the aisle ( 走廊). “Lucy is a new girl in class. She just moved here a little over a month ago. Think about how that must feel. She doesn’t know one single person in the school. She left all of her old friends behind and now she has to try to make new friends. Your party will be a great chance for her to get to know everyone. ”
“No, it won’t. She will probably sit in the corner and not talk to anyone. Every day at lunch she sits all by herself. She wants to eat alone!" Madison shrugged and rolled her eyes (翻白眼).
“Madison, I’m done discussing this. You will invite every girl in your class, including Lucy Gilbert!"
On Saturday morning, the family blew up balloons and decorated the house cheerfully. Madison was dressed beautifully for the day, wearing her new blue dress. It was not typical of her to dress herself like this. She usually wore sports clothes because she loved to be outside riding her horse Star with a lead rope (缰绳).
Madison greeted her friends at the doorstep, picturing (想象)various presents her friends would bring her. In the meanwhile, she was wondering whether Lucy would ruin the party if she came. Anyhow, all the girls she invited came finally, including Lucy. The girls had a fantastic time by singing and dancing while Lucy sat in the corner silently alone. Later, all the girls gathered around the table as Madison opened her presents. Opening them one by one, Madison thanked her friends, with a bright smile on her face.

“Patients are able to be connected with partners through music,” said Dr.
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. B 15. D

“No it won’t.

【答案】高分范文
Lucy’s present was the very last to be opened. Worrying that it would ruin the party, Madison grabbed the present reluctantly. As soon as she opened the box, her eyes widened in surprise——inside was a delicately hand-made lead rope! Amazed at its beauty, Madison pulled it out of the box. “It’s a lead rope for your horse Star. I made it by myself!”Lucy added, “I heard you talking about your horse at school. That’s when I got the idea of making you a lead rope. ”
Deeply moved by what she said, Madison held the lead rope tightly in her hands. It was the most beautiful birthday present she ever received. She suddenly felt so guilty because she had been so mean to Lucy. Feeling a mixture of regret and gratitude, she blinked back her tears and said, “Thanks so much for this lead rope. I love it! Would you like to join us and be our friends ” Lucy nodded cheerfully——Madison put her arm around Luey’s shoulders, both smiling. With applause and laughter echoing through the house, Lucy joined the other girls to enjoy the party.
