Quietly sitting there reading, I found myself suddenly listening to the train guard’s announcements (通知). Train travelers will surely agree that when the guard (列车长) makes an announcement, whether it’s the recorded message or the guard’s message, few people listen to it, because it’s often quite dull or hard to understand. This one was different. I noticed that other passengers appeared to be listening, too. Not only that, everyone was smiling!
Why was so much attention being paid to this message As best I can recall the guard said something along these lines, “Good Morning Ladies, Gentlemen and Children, this is the 7: 35 a.m. from Penrith to Central and you’ll be pleased to know that we are right on time. I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values (内卷式价值观). As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have constantly (不断地) received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school’s community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all.

11. Why does the author want to major in social work at university
A. To gain a well-paid job. B. To give his life a purpose.
C. To meet his grandparents’ expectations. D. To better help the disadvantaged.

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally (心理上) healthy according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28, 000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV, Netflix or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety (焦虑) compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic (学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
12. Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study
A. Talking about their lifestyles. B. Introducing their after-school activities.
C. Reporting their mental states on a scale. D. Answering questions about screen time use.
13. What do the researchers find about teenage girls
A. They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B. Few of them take part in after-school activities.
C. Anxiety has become a serious problem among them.
D. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
14. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4
A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. High screen time is common among teenagers.
C. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
15. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study
A. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
B. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They allow teenagers to become better learners.

However, the peace was ruined when one day I lost one thousand pesos (比索) in my bag. I always kept my wallet near me. I only chose my trusted students to get near my things. I kept the door of my office closed every time I went for my classes. My spine trembled upon my seeing my money was no longer there. I scanned my wallet, my secret pocket and everything in my room. But all my attempts were in vain.
I was angry. That morning before my class ended, I appealed to everyone to help me catch the “thief”. At 4:00 in the afternoon that day, I reminded them about my warning of returning my money before investigation took place. Then suddenly, a boy called Larry said, “Miss, look at the paper on the floor!”
My heart beat wildly when I saw the crumpled paper which I thought useless. I replied to them immediately upon holding the paper. “Yes, here it is!” I showed it to them. They urged me to open the paper. I opened it and to my surprise, I saw the one thousand pesos! I felt relieved. Then, a letter appeared among the banknotes.
“Miss, I am sorry that I stole the money. I returned it. Do not tell my classmates that I returned the money and do not mention anything about it in class, because it hurts me. Thank you, Miss. But I can’t tell you why I stole your money.”
Oh my God! My brain flashed the handwriting of my trusted boy—the “thief”. I was sure this was Tom’s handwriting.

根据第一段“Train travelers will surely agree that when the guard makes an announcement, whether it’s the recorded message or the guard’s message, few people listen to it, because it’s often quite dull or hard to understand. (坐火车的人肯定会同意,当列车员发出通知时,无论是录音还是列车员的通知,很少有人听,因为它通常很无聊或很难理解。)”可知,几乎没乘客听火车上的通知是因为它比较无聊或难理解,即“不吸引人”。故选A。
根据第三段作者所说的话“Well, I really appreciate your announcement. Thank you for you’re extremely good message, which gave me and the other passengers such a good start to the day. Please keep doing it.

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally (心理上) healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine.

That school year God blessed me with two trusted children—Tom and Mary. Whenever I went out for training, programs or personal matters, I left everything to them.

The next day, I called Tom to my office. The boy admitted that he was the thief and asked for my forgiveness. I asked him the reason. He said Mary’s mother was in hospital and Mary’s family didn’t have enough money to pay for the treatment. I said in earnest: “Tom, I’m quite touched by your golden heart, but taking money without permission is not a proper way to solve the problem.” Tom lowered his head in shame. “Come on! Let’s visit Mary’s mother and see what we can do for her.”
We went to the hospital and saw Mary’s mother. Mary’s mother was surprised to see us, but soon she collected herself and showed her great gratitude for us visiting her. Thinking of sensible Mary and kind-hearted Tom, I chose not to tell her the incident, comforted her and left the 1000 pesos and some more for her. On our way back, Tom hugged me tightly, tears in his eyes. Later Tom became a better person. Under proper guidance, a boy with a warm heart can shine more brightly.
