Silk. The word itself is beautiful. The story of silk starts in China over 4000 years ago. One story says a silkworm's cocoon(茧)fell into a woman's teacup. It then opened into a single, unbroken thread. This was an important discovery. The Chinese learned they could use the cocoons to make cloth that was both beautiful to look at and soft to touch. Making silk was a protected secret in China for many years. In other countries, silk was very valuable. Often it was worth more than gold. Another story tells us that the secret finally got out when a lady left China to go to India. In her hair, she secretly carried many silkworms.
By the year I AD, silk was sold as far west as Rome, and all along the Silk Road. which connected China with places in the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Around the year 300.silk also traveled from China to Japan. Centuries later, in 1522, the Spanish brought silkworms to Mexico.
Nowadays people around the world still make many beautiful things from silk. But silk isn't only beautiful. It looks delicate, but it is actually very strong. For example, it has been used to make bicycle tires. And some doctors even use silk threads in hospital operations. Silk is also lightweight and warm. This makes it great for clothes like winter jackets, trousers, and shoes.

39. How did Romans first learn about silk

A. It connected Middle east and Rome. C. It passed Japan. B. It was built in the year 1 AD. D. It looked like silk.
E
You know those maps you see of countries Notice how all the countries are in different colors, but no two neighboring countries are of the same color And notice that there are at most four colors in these maps.
That doesn't happen by chance. In fact, that's the minimum number of colors you need for any map with contiguous areas to be colored such that no two neighboring countries are the same color.
That's what the four-color theorem is.
Now, a lot of maps can be made with three colors. But the theorem is important because it means that as long as every area is contiguous, you never need more than four colors.
The four-color theorem was proven in 1976 at the University of Illinois by Appel and Haken.
The proof took weeks to run on an IBM 360.It was the first mathematical proof that required a computer to help in the proof.
42. What is the passage mainly about
A. Two famous mathematicians. C. A new math finding. B. An interesting math rule. D. A computer game.
43. According to the theorem, how many colors are needed to color a map with neighboring areas
A. At least four. B. At most four. C. At least three. D. At most three.
44. What is NOT mentioned in the last paragraph
A. How the theorem was proved. C. Who proved the theorem. B. Where the theorem was proved. D. Why the theorem was proved.
