The full stop, which comes from Greek punctuation (标点符号), is usually used to express the end of a sentence but now it frightens young people when used in social media communication as a sign of anger.
According to experts, youngsters used to communicating electronically break up their thoughts by sending each one as a separate message, rather than using a full stop, which they use only to signal they are annoyed. Some have said the full stop is redundant when used in texting because the message is ended just by sending it. “If you send a text message without a full stop, it’s already obvious that you’ve concluded the message.”
Owen McArdle from Cambridge University told the newspaper: “I’m not sure I agree about emails. I guess it depends how formal they are. But full stops are very much the exception in youngsters’ instant messages, and have a new role in expressing anger.”
In 2015, a study from Binghamton University in New York suggested that people who finish messages with full stops are considered insincere. The study involved 126 undergraduates and the researchers found that text messages ending in the most final of punctuation marks-eg “lol.”, “let’s go to Nando’s.”-were considered being less sincere. Unusually, texts ending in an exclamation point-“lmao!”, “what body part even is that I hope it’s your arm!” -are thought heartfelt.
Research leader Celia Klin said at the time: “When speaking, people easily convey social and emotional information with eye gaze, facial expressions, tone of voice, pauses and so on. People obviously can’t use these when they are texting. Thus, it makes sense that texters rely on what they have available to them-special signs, deliberate misspellings that imitate (模仿) speech sounds and, according to our data, punctuation.”

How do you deal with plastic bags from the supermarket Throw them away or reuse them How about eating them
Indian company EnviGreen has made a bag with natural ingredients (成分). It looks and feels just like plastic, but can be broken down easily. The bags bring no harm to the environment. Both humans and animals can safely eat them.
EnviGreen founder Ashwath Hedge spent four years doing experiments with a combination of 12 natural ingredients. They include potato, corn, vegetable oil and banana. He made the ingredients into liquid and used the liquid to make the bag. Although the EnviGreen bag is about 35 percent more expensive than a common plastic bag, it has many advantages. According to the Wall Street Journal, it takes 1,000 years for common plastic bags to break down. But an EnviGreen bag can naturally break down in less than 180 days. It also breaks down in less than a day in water, and in about 15 seconds in boiling water. Hedge was happy to show it in his interview with The Better India. In the interview, he put an EnviGreen bag in water and ate it with a smile.
According to India’s Minister of State for Atmosphere, Forest and Weather Change, the country produces more than 15,000 tons of plastic waste every day. But only 9,000 tons are processed. In China, 3 billion plastic bags are used every day. Maybe the EnviGreen bag could be a solution to the world problem of plastic pollution.
5.Why is the EnviGreen bag eatable
A.Because it looks like plastic.
B.Because it can be broken down easily.
C.Because it consists of natural ingredients.
D.Because it does no harm to the environment.
6.If a common plastic bag costs 0.5, what’s the price of an EnviGreen bag
A. 0.85. B. 0.675. C. 0.65. D. 0.475.
7.Which sentence can describe Ashwath Hedge’s experiment
A.It took him less than four years to succeed.
B.He made a special liquid to form the material.
C.He combined 4 kinds of food to create the EnviGreen bag.
D.The EnviGreen bag can naturally break down in 15 seconds.
8.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Plastic pollution can be controlled with combined efforts.
B.India has benefited a lot from adopting the EnviGreen bag.
C.Chinese government has paid attention to plastic pollution.
D.Plastic pollution is a severe problem in some developing countries.
The new year is the moment when people vow to improve their fitness. They join gyms, swear off alcohol and adopt healthier diets. These resolutions usually do not last beyond January.
But some employers try to help their workers stick to their goals by offering “wellness” programmes. One of the longest- running examples began in 1979 at Johnson & Johnson (j&j), an American health-care company. The plan promotes weight loss, smoking quitting and efforts to reduce blood pressure.
The firm claims it reduced medical costs by $400 an employee per year, and resulted in fewer workers suffering from heart disease or high blood pressure. Yet an examination of the data by Martin Cherniack of the University of Connecticut found that in 2005-08, a sharp jump in alcohol use, depression and stress among j&j employees occurred .This coincided with a period when the firm had a target of lifting productivity by 9% a year. So the employees may have been fitter, but it is possible that workplace pressure to produce more meant greater stress.
All this suggests that employee well-being is a rather more complex topic than can be tackled(应对) by a programme devoted to exercise and healthy living. A study by Rand Europe, a research institute, found that obvious bad habits such as smoking and high alcohol use were in fact not associated with lower productivity, while obese workers were no more likely to take time off than anyone else. The biggest productivity problems were associated with lack of sleep, financial concerns and mental-health issues-factors that may well be directly linked to work-related stress.
It seems reasonable for companies to expect some level of economies return on any wellness programme that they provide. But the trade-off should not be too blatant. Making employees fitter so you can work them a lot harder seems rather like drilling your infantry(野战军) on a course before sending them to face the machine guns. A better impact on morale (and thus productivity) might occur if workers felt that their managers had a genuine interest in their welfare.
9.What can we learn from the example of Johnson & Johnson
A.A healthy lifestyle contributes to higher productivity.
B.A wellness program alone can’t achieve the desired effect.
C.Caring for employees’ physical health is of great importance.
D.A health program benefits both the company and the employees.
10.What does the study by Rand Europe indicate
A.Certain living habits help improve motivation.
B.Work-related pressure is to blame for low productivity.
C.Financial concerns have nothing to do with productivity.
D.Obesity is associated with lower attendance in the workplace.
11.What does the underlined word “blatant” mean
A.Obvious. B.Effective. C.Challenging. D.Flexible.
12.What’s the purpose of this text
A.To compare various factors affecting productivity.
B.To introduce a new way of increasing productivity.
C.To appeal to employers to improve their health care program.
D.To question some seemingly effective practice in business management.

根据第一段“The full stop, which comes from Greek punctuation (标点符号), is usually used to express the end of a sentence but now it frightens young people when used in social media communication as a sign of anger.( 句号,来自希腊的标点符号,通常用来表达句子的结尾,但现在它在社交媒体传播中被用作愤怒的标志时会吓到年轻人。)”
根据第二段最后一句“If you send a text message without a full stop, it’s already obvious that you’ve concluded the message.(如果发信息不用句号,也很明显的表示了你已经结束了这条信息)”,因此推断划线句句意为:有些人说,发短信时用句号是多余的,因为短信一发出就结束了。
根据倒数第二段最后一句“Unusually, texts ending in an exclamation point-“lmao!”, “what body part even is that I hope it’s your arm!” are thought heartfelt.( 不寻常的是,以感叹号结尾的文本“笑死我了!” “那是什么身体部分? 我希望这是你的手臂!”被认为是发自内心的)”可推断,感叹号常常表达真诚。故选B。
4.主旨大意题。根据第一段内容“The full stop, which comes from Greek punctuation (标点符号), is usually used to express the end of a sentence but now it frightens young people when used in social media communication as a sign of anger.( 句号,来自希腊的标点符号,通常用来表达句子的结尾,但现在它在社交媒体传播中被用作愤怒的标志时会吓到年轻人。)”
根据第二段“Indian company EnviGreen has made a bag with natural ingredients (成分). It looks and feels just like plastic, but can be broken down easily. The bags bring no harm to the environment. Both humans and animals can safely eat them.”(印度公司EnviGreen用天然原料制作了一款袋子。
根据第三段中“Although the EnviGreen bag is about 35 percent more expensive than a common plastic bag, it has many advantages.”(尽管EnviGreen袋比普通塑料袋贵35%,但它有很多优点。)
根据第三段中“EnviGreen founder Ashwath Hedge spent four years doing experiments with a combination of 12 natural ingredients. They include potato, corn, vegetable oil and banana. He made the ingredients into liquid and used the liquid to make the bag.”(EnviGreen的创始人阿什沃斯·赫奇花了四年时间用12种天然成分的组合做实验。
根据最后一段最后一句“In China, 3 billion plastic bags are used every day. Maybe the EnviGreen bag could be a solution to the world problem of plastic pollution.”(在中国,每天有30亿个塑料袋被使用。
9.B 10.B 11.A 12.D
根据第三段最后一句 “So the employees may have been fitter, but it is possible that workplace pressure to produce more meant greater stress.” 和第四段第一句“All this suggests that employee well-being is a rather more complex topic than can be tackled(应对) by a programme devoted to exercise and healthy living.”
根据第四段 “A study by Rand Europe, … The biggest productivity problems were associated with lack of sleep, financial concerns and mental-health issues-factors that may well be directly linked to work-related stress.”
根据上文“It seems reasonable for companies to expect some level of economies return on any wellness programme that they provide.”
根据最后一段“It seems reasonable for companies to expect some level of economies return on any wellness programme that they provide. … A better impact on morale (and thus productivity) might occur if workers felt that their managers had a genuine interest in their welfare.”
