Scientists looked for paw prints (爪印) in the forests. In this way, they could know the number of pandas. "Pandas are hard to see in the wild," said Colby, a scientist. "They hide in the thick bamboo forests." That is why scientists used paw prints to get the number. The number of pandas was a surprise to scientists. They learned that more pandas live in the wild than they thought.
"We found pandas living in areas we didn't know," said Colby. Although the news is good, pandas are still in danger.
The main threat to pandas is that their land is becoming smaller and smaller. Pandas lose their land when people cut down parts of the forests for wood and farming. Today, the cat can only be found in certain places of Africa. They have lost most of their living places. Lions once lived all over Africa as well. But now their population is becoming smaller and smaller. Illegal hunting (非法捕猎) is also a problem to the wild big cats in some places.
There are protected (受保护的) areas in many parts of Africa. But outside those places, wild African cats may be killed. They may be killed for their beautiful skins. They may be killed for use in traditional medicines. They may be killed by people who hunt for sport, or fun.
Some organizations (组织) and groups, like the Cat Survival Trust (CST) and the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), are working to protect African cats. They are trying their best to make sure these cats can live in peace.

①The study of animal behavior (行为) is interesting. Scientists research the ways animals use to look for food. They study how animals protect themselves from their natural predators (天敌), and which animals kill other animals for food. All of this helps us understand how useful animals can be.
②Each country or culture raises some animals for food. In the United States, people mainly eat meat from cows, chickens and pigs. In other countries, people might raise sheep or buffalo (水牛) for meat. These differences come in part from weather and other environmental conditions. In some countries, people don't always choose some animals, such as dogs, for food while in other countries such animals may become people's favourite food.

Elephants, camels, and other animals carry people and things from place to place. Carrier pigeons (信鸽) have been used to send messages.

Two people in Russia found a little tiger in the snow on a cold day in February, 2012. They took the tiger to a local wildlife inspector (当地野生动物巡视员),Andrey Oryol. Over the following weeks,Andrey took care of (照顾) the tiger. But then he got worried: what could he do with a three-month-old tiger
It was an Amur tiger. "The tigers do not live in Siberia, but the Russian Far East," said Dr. Miquelle. He spent 25 years studying Amur tigers in Russia. He said they are named after the Amur River, the longest river in that area.

The tiger, now named Zolushka, became the center's first tiger. Over the next year, she grew into a big, healthy tiger. In the center, she learned to catch wild animals. By the spring of 2013, scientists thought she was ready to go back to the wild.
The scientists chose a new area for the tiger. They used cameras to watch Zolushka. Then in December, 2015, the cameras gave exciting news: Zolushka had become a mother of two!

How to Protect Wild Animals
Many wild animals are in danger.
Why are these wild animals in danger Because the environment that they are living in is becoming worse. For example, with the development of cities, the air is polluted and the water is not clean any more. Wild animals' living places are also getting smaller. Many of them don't have enough food to eat. At the same time, many people kill wild animals for their fur, skin, teeth, and meat.
As we all know, animals are our friends. Human beings can't live without plants or animals. We should plant more trees to make homes for wild animals and stop killing them. If there are more plants and more wild animals, the world will become more beautiful, so protecting wild animals is protecting ourselves. Let's work together to protect them.
