Over the Kite Festival weekend, you’ll find award-winning authors sharing their insights on crafting stories and electronic pop legends headlining on the Saturday night.

When I was little, my dad would let me sit beside him while he painted. He would tell me how the cow by itself is just a cow, and the grassland by itself is just grass and flowers, and the sunlight going through the trees is just a beam of light, but put them all together and you’ve got magic.
I understood what he was saying, but I’ve never felt what he was saying until one day when I was up in the sycamore tree(梧桐树) to rescue a kite stuck in the branches.
It was a long way up, but I thought I’d give it a try. I started climbing. Then I looked down. And suddenly I got dizzy and weak. But the kite was still beyond my reach. I caught my breath and forced myself to concentrate on the kite as I climbed up.
When I had the kite free, I needed a minute to rest. That’s when the fear began to disappear, and in its place came the most amazing feeling that I was flying, sailing among the clouds.
Then I began to notice how wonderful the light wind smelled. I couldn’t stop breathing it in, filling my lungs with the sweetest smell I’d ever known.
I never got over the view. I kept thinking of what it felt like to be up so high in that tree. I wanted to see it, to feel it, again. And again!
It wasn’t long before I wasn’t afraid of being up so high and found the same spot. I could sit there for hours, just looking out at the world. Sunsets were amazing: Some days they’d be purple and pink; some days they’d be bright orange, setting fire to clouds across the horizon.
The view from my sycamore was more than clouds and wind and colors combined. Eventually, my father’s belief moved from my head to my heart. I started marveling(惊奇) at how that was possible. How could I be so full of peace and full of wonder
It was magic.

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (麻省理工学院) have turned spider webs into music——creating an strange soundtrack that could help them better understand how the spiders output their complex creations and even how they communicate.
The MIT team worked with Berlin-based artist Tomas Saraceno to take 2D (two- dimensional) laser (激光) scans of a spider web, which were linked together and made into a mathematical model that could recreate the web in 3D in VR (virtual reality). They also worked with MIT’s music department to create the virtual instrument.
“Even though the web looks really random (随机),there actually are a lot of inside structures and you can visualize (可视化) them and you can look at them, but it’s really hard to grasp for the human imagination or human brain to understand all these structural details,” said MIT engineering professor Markus Buehler, who presented the work on Monday at a virtual meeting of the American Chemical Society.
Listening to the music while moving through the VR spider web lets you see and hear these structural changes and gives a better idea of how spiders see the world, he told CNN. “Spiders use vibrations (振动) as a way to locate themselves, to communicate with other spiders and so the idea of thinking really like a spider would experience the world was something that was very important to us as spider material scientists,” Buehler said.
Spiders are able to build their webs without shelves or supports, so having a better idea of how they work could lead to the development of advanced new 3D printing techniques. “The reason why I did that is I wanted to be able to get information really from the spider world, which is very strange and mysterious,” Buehler explained. In addition to the scientific value, Buehler said the webs are musically interesting and that you can hear the sounds the spider creates during construction. “It’s unusual and odd and scary, but finally beautiful.” he described.
28.What have MIT scientists done according to the passage
A.They have translated spider webs into sounds.
B.They have made a mathematical model to produce webs.
C.They have created a soundtrack to catch spiders.
D.They have known how spiders communicate.
29.What can we know about spider webs from paragraph 3
A.Their structures are beautiful and clear.
B.Professor Markus Buehler knows them well.
C.The American Chemical Society presents the result.
D.They are complex for people to figure it out.
30.In which field will the study be helpful
A.virtual reality B.printing
C.painting D.film-making
31.What is the main idea of the passage
A.It tells us that the music created by spiders is scary.
B.It shows how the researchers carry out the experiment.
C.It presents a new and creative way to study spiders.
D.It explains why scientists did the experiment.

It’s no secret that inhaling (吸入) smoke is bad for your lungs. But now, scientists are suggesting smoke may also carry and spread infectious diseases. The theory, published in Science Magazine, is based on research that found wildfire smoke is crowded with thousands of species of microorganisms. Some of these microorganisms, including bacteria and fungal spores, are known to cause disease.
The new research suggests that when a wildfire burns plant or animal matter and disturbs soils, it exposes thousands of species of bacteria and fungi that otherwise might not easily become airborne You might think the high heat from fire would kill these organisms, but one study mentioned in the article found that some bacteria even multiply post-fire. Scientists say the organisms attach to smoke particles, allowing them to travel thousands of miles across continents.
Dr. Peter Chen, director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, is interested in the theory but somewhat skeptical that the microorganisms in smoke would actually cause infections. Many bacteria and fungi don’t cause lung infections, says Chen, but it’s certainly possible that a significant amount could worsen symptoms in someone with a preexisting lung condition. “I always thought it was the particles in smoke that were causing these issues,” says Chen. “But when I read this, I started thinking: Could it be the microorganisms that are also worsening existing illnesses ”
Whether the microorganisms in smoke actually cause infection or simply worsen potential respiratory (呼吸的) issues, the article raises a new health threat that is “certainly alarming”, says Kelsey Jack, an associate professor of environmental and development economics. This is especially true for lower-income populations, Jack says, because people with fewer means are often more exposed to the environment. If smoke is affecting the air quality in a certain area, the people who work outside, or who have to go to the office on foot or by bike will inhale more smoke than those who drive.
But until more research is done, Chen says the best thing people can do is just follow existing recommendations when air quality is poor—including staying indoors, keeping windows and doors closed, using HEPA filters and running air conditioning.
32.What can we know about the microorganisms from paragraph 2
A.They could be killed by high heat.
B.They could reproduce in large numbers after fires.
C.They could possibly travel through air by themselves.
D.They can’t easily attach themselves to smoke particles.
33.How do most microorganisms affect people according to Dr. Peter Chen
A.They might worsen lung diseases. B.They will cause lung infections.
C.They will destroy living environments. D.They might damage respiratory systems.
34.Why are low-income people suffering more than others
A.They live in poor areas.
B.They drive to and from work.
C.They have suffered from lung disease.
D.They are exposed to polluted air more frequently.
35.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A.Results of the new research.
B.Suggestions on dealing with poor air quality.
C.Disagreements between the author and Chen.
D.Benefits of preventing smoke from polluting the air.

As you get older, you’ll meet a wider range of people from diverse cultures. If you haven’t met many people from different backgrounds, it can be hard to know how to respect their culture. 36
Know your own culture
One of the best ways to understand other people’s cultures is to first consider your own. Most of us don’t realize that our customs and beliefs might seem strange to someone else. Don’t think of your own way of life as the only normal one and everyone else’s to be strange. 37
Learn about a different culture
Maybe you’ve recently met someone from a different culture, or you’re curious about how different people live. When you meet people from a different culture, ask them about their lives. Also, you can read books, watch movies or listen to radio shows. 38 The more you learn, the more likely you will get used to greeting cultural differences with curiosity rather than doubt.
39
Differences between us are what make life so interesting, so just accept the differences between yourself and your friends from different cultures. The best way to respect people from other cultures is to strike a balance between curiosity and appreciation: 40 . Also, learn how to just silently observe and appreciate the differences that make us unique.
A.Respect other cultures.
B.Appreciate the differences.
C.Ask questions if your friends are open to it.
D.In this way, you may find it hard to know your own culture.
E.Otherwise, it’s hard to approach those differences with respect.
F.Here are some tips for learning more about them and about yourself.
G.These will help you get an insider’s view on a different culture.

My middle child, Jake, was smart and good-looking, but he always sees the cup of life as half empty. Every day when he came home from school, Jake would list everything bad that happened that day!
On his ninth birthday, we saved enough money to take the family to Disneyland for two days. His dad and I didn’t make much then, so it cost a considerable amount, but we felt Jake’s birthday was worth it. After doing Disneyland to death (玩够了), we returned to our hotel room, all exhausted. And I asked the birthday boy, “Did you have fun today, Jake ”
All my fault-finding son could say to me was “Pirates (海盗) of the Caribbean was closed!” “Jake Marshall,” I was clearly unable to contain my anger, “we stood in line for an hour and a half to see The Haunted Mansion. We rode Space Mountain three times. We spent two days playing in the park, and all you can say is, Pirates of the Caribbean was closed ” Clearly, something had to be done about his negative attitude and I was going to be the one to do it!
I was determined to help him. I read every article and bought every book. With the help of great resources, I found my son had the tendency to see the worst in every situation. My research told me that people with negativity have an emotional need for order and sensitivity. That meant I needed to listen to my son’s daily pessimistic reports. My usual reaction was to try to talk Jake out of his negativity, but that wouldn’t satisfy his need for sensitivity, so I had to let him finish his complaints and ask what good things happened. Then I needed to wait until he could tell me. This would help Jake realize that good things really were happening to him.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
One day Jake came home from school and complained as usual.

From then on, Jake came to understand the power of seeing good points.

W: My name is Amanda Brown, the founder of the non-profit organization Sewing Mouth Masks. Some people may ask me how I started the organization. Well, I am a patient with lung problems. I have depended on caregivers for years. Recently, one of the m told me she had paid 10 dollars for a mask to protect herself from the flu. Not until then did I realize the severe shortage of masks. That gave me an idea. I could do something for those who once helped me — my doctor, my friends. I hope they could protect themselves better. As a woman good at sewing, I came up with the idea of sewing masks for my doctor and caregivers. Quite beyond my expectations, a week later, what started as a one-person operation has grown into a small army of at-home volunteer mask makers. I created a webpage called Sewing Mouth Masks. For the first two days, 3,000 members registered. Soon, that number rose to 5,300. Therefore, I established the organization named after the webpage and we volunteered to make masks for those who need them. Now, we have plenty of volunteers. But it’s still far from enough to relieve the shortage of masks. We still need many more hands. Anyone who wants to help is welcome, even if you can only make one a day. Come on, join us and make your contributions.

根据第二段中的“I understood what he was saying, but I’ve never felt what he was saying until one day when I was up in the sycamore tree(梧桐树) to rescue a kite stuck in the branches.”(我明白他在说什么,但我从来没有感觉到他在说什么,直到有一天,我爬到梧桐树上,去救一只卡在树枝上的风筝。)
根据第三段中的“And suddenly I got dizzy and weak.”(突然间,我感到头晕和虚弱。) ;“I caught my breath and forced myself to concentrate on the kite as I climbed up.”(我屏住呼吸,强迫自己集中精力在风筝上。) 根据第四段中的“That’s when the fear began to disappear, and in its place came the most amazing feeling that I was flying, sailing among the clouds.”(就在那时,恐惧开始消失,取而代之的是一种最奇妙的感觉,那就是我在飞翔,在云中航行。)和第五段“Then I began to notice how wonderful the light wind smelled. I couldn’t stop breathing it in, filling my lungs with the sweetest smell I’d ever known.”(然后我开始注意到微风的味道是多么美妙。
根据第一段中的“He would tell me how the cow by itself is just a cow, and the grassland by itself is just grass and flowers, and the sunlight going through the trees is just a beam of light, but put them all together and you’ve got magic.”(他会告诉我,牛本身就是牛,草地本身就是草和花,穿过树木的阳光只是一束光,但把它们放在一起,你就有了魔力。)和最后一段“Eventually, my father’s notion(观念) moved from my head to my heart.”(最终,父亲的想法从我的脑海中进入了我的内心。)
第一段提到作者父亲给他讲述的道理“He would tell me how the cow by itself is just a cow, and the grassland by itself is just grass and flowers, and the sunlight going through the trees is just a beam of light, but put them all together and you’ve got magic.”(他会告诉我,牛本身就是牛,草地本身就是草和花,穿过树木的阳光只是一束光,但把它们放在一起,你就有了魔力。) Up in the Sycamore Tree(梧桐树上)以“梧桐树”为意向,讲述作者在梧桐树上看到各种场景后得到的感悟。

根据最后一段中“Spiders are able to build their webs without shelves or supports, so having a better idea of how they work could lead to the development of advanced new 3D printing techniques. (蜘蛛可以在没有架子或支撑的情况下织网,所以更好地了解它们是如何工作的,可能会导致先进的新型3D打印技术的发展。)”可知,研究蜘蛛如何结网有利于提升打印技术。故选B项。

34.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“This is especially true for lower-income populations, Jack says, because people with fewer means are often more exposed to the environment. If smoke is affecting the air quality in a certain area, the people who work outside, or who have to go to the office on foot or by bike will inhale more smoke than those who drive.(杰克说,对于低收入人群来说尤其如此,因为收入较少的人往往更容易受到环境的影响。如果烟雾影响了某个地区的空气质量,那么在外面工作的人,或者必须步行或骑自行车去办公室的人,会比开车的人吸入更多的烟雾)”可知,烟雾会传播疾病这件事对低收入的人群有更大的影响,是因为他们更多地直接接触被污染的空气。故选D。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“But until more research is done, Chen says the best thing people can do is just follow existing recommendations when air quality is poor—including staying indoors, keeping windows and doors closed, using HEPA filters and running air conditioning.(但在更多的研究完成之前,陈说,人们能做的最好的事情就是在空气质量差的时候遵循现有的建议,包括呆在室内,关闭门窗,使用高效微粒空气过滤器和开空调)”可知,最后一段主要陈述了应对被污染空气的建议。故选B。

One day Jake came home from school and complained as usual. He listed the terrible things at school. I listened carefully, looking at him and nodding now and then. After his complaint, I asked what good things happened to him. “Nothing.” His response was what I could expect. “Something good must have happened. Think it over, my boy.” I encouraged with a gentle smile. After about fifteen minutes’ effort, he admitted being praised by his head teacher for helping cleaning the front desk. Through this practice, he realized something good really happened to him.
From then on, Jake came to understand the power of seeing good points. He would not just consider everything awful, but was willing to discover something awesome. And to my great joy, he kept patient and peaceful during his sharing. He even danced in excitement at wonderful things. I witnessed his attitude changing from negativity to positivity. The path to getting there seemed to be a struggle, but he was making headway. My hard work was paying off and I believed Jake would get used to seeing the cup of life as half full.
