Most kids spent their summer holidays playing video-games, watching TV and sleeping in.Parents can follow the steps below, and your kids can break their summertime tech habits and adapt to a school-friendly schedule in two weeks.
Shift bedtime
There’s nothing more important to kicking off the school year successfully than getting sufficient sleep. Two weeks before school begins, schedule bedtime back by about 20 minutes a night to stop kids staying up late or sleeping in. Instead of a long, fun bathtime, switch to a quick shower. Keep all digital devices out of their bedrooms and buy them alarm clocks.
Set screen goals
Having intentional goals for screen use can help kids change their tech habits. You might decide to make screen time a reward rather than a right. Set limits on digital activities such as no videogames until they complete homework. Don’t jump to no apps but consider using apps that control the length of time kids can use a device. Establish zones in your house where electronics simply are not allowed. Besides, get your kids involved in activities that don’t need a screen.
Make a schedule
A summer spent without routine can make jumping back into the structure of school difficult for kids. Setting a schedule for the last two weeks of summer can work. Ms. Rawson, founder of the Screen Time Clinic, suggests creating blocks of time that mirror those of the school day, arranging 30 to 50 minutes for an activity, depending on the kid’s age, along with a set lunchtime. Kids should have a say in deciding how to fill the day’s time blocks. The activities can involve anything but screens.
11. Before the new school year begins, kids can shift bedtime by .
A. taking a long bath B. sleeping in a lot
C. using phones as alarm clocks D. moving to bed earlier
12. According to the passage, what should parents do to adjust kids’ screen time
A. Manage homework time with apps.
B. Forbid them from using electronics.
C. Reserve areas for screen-free activities.
D. Remove apps from their digital devices.
13 A school-friendly schedule should
A. reflect individual needs of kids
B. copy the exact school timetables
C. start from the beginning of holidays
D. combine study with digital entertainment

For some people, October is October. On October 5, Katmai National Park and Preserve in southern Alaska kicked off Fat Bear Week, when fans compare before and after photos of bears to vote for the one they think has gained the most weight before they bed down for the long freezing winter. Bear 747, also known as “Bear Force One”, took the first-place spot with 68,105 votes. It weighed around 1,400 pounds.
Fat Bear Week started in 2014.At first it was just Fat Bear Tuesday. Mike Fitz, a former park keeper at Katmai, noticed that live webcams showing the bears generated a lot of online comments, so he let people vote for their favorite fat bear on the Internet. The one-day event attracted 1,700 votes. In 2015, it was extended to a week. Last year, nearly 800,000 people got involved, turning it into a global campaign.
The contest serves two main purposes. First, some of America’s national parks are in remote and undeveloped areas, which are difficult or costly to reach. Fat Bear Week brings Alaska’s wilderness to fans’ computer screens. “It’s not limited to the fortunate few who can go to the river anymore, ”Fitz said.
Second, Fat Bear Week brings attention to the bears and the ecosystems they live in. The 2,200 bears of Katmai are strong for feeding on some of the healthiest salmon(三文鱼)in the world, said Sara Wolman, a former park keeper. Salmon in the Pacific Northwest are suffering from overfishing, dam construction and warming rivers due to climate change. Luckily, Brooks River, which Katmai’s bears like to fish in, has been free from these threats so far.
Fat Bear Week has spread like viruses. Fans and creators say it’s because it shows a conservation success story. For one week, people don’t have to focus on climate change or habitat loss. “Maybe things aren’t super great all the time in the world,” said Felicia Jimenez, who is a current Katmai keeper. “But there are some really fat bears in Alaska.”
14. Why did Bear 747 become the winner of Fat Bear Week in southern Alaska
A. It gained the most pounds. B. It was the heaviest.
C. It presented the best photos. D. It was the most famous.
15. What is the purpose of paragraph 2
A. To show the popularity of fat bears. B. To review the history of the event.
C. To praise Mike Fitz for his work. D. To explain the role of live webcams.
16. What can we learn about Katmai’s bears
A. They bring tourists to the park. B. They face a population decline.
C. They remain difficult to be seen. D. They have a stable food source.
17. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Fat Bear Week: Conservation Is Joyful B. Brown Bears; Winter Survival Is Crucial
C. Bear 747: A Fat Yet Healthy Champion D. Katmai’s Bears: A Special Beauty Contest

After noticing that her eighth grade students had problems focusing during math class, a North Carolina teacher decided to channel (引导) their energy in a different way—cycling.
It doesn’t sound like the most common thing to do during math class, but Bethany Lambeth, a teacher from Wake County, says that ever since she fixed cycling machines under her students’ desks, the quality of their work has improved greatly. They are paying more attention to what the teachers say, and, most importantly, they are no longer fidgeting all the time.
“Before, they were drumming on their desks or touching other students. They don’t do that any more now. Their feet are getting the movement out,” she said. “There has been a huge increase in the quality of our students’ work and a decrease in the amount of missing work. I think the world is changing a lot and kids need to be able to do something different.”
Lambeth fixed the cycling machines at the end of last year, which cost around $150 each. The cost was covered by money from kind people. Not all desks have pedals (踏板) under them, so not all the children have to use one. The school is hoping to get more pedals because of the role cycling machines could play.
The kids clearly love the new “toys”. Sofia Fedele one of Lambeth’s students, said cycling helped her focus on her work during class. “I usually tap my feet and stuff to keep me focused, I think pedaling is much better, it keeps me exercising and focused,” she said.
Quinn Spear, another student in Lambeth’s class, also mentioned the good effect on health of cycling during class. He told reporters that he had pedaled 5.5 miles and burned 133 calories, all before 10 a.m.
18. What does the underlined word “fidgeting” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Keeping moving the body. B. Competing with each other.
C. Doubling themselves. D. Laughing at others.
19. Who paid for the cycling machines
A. The school. B. The students. C. Some companies. D. Some nice people.
20. What does the author want to tell us by the examples in the last two paragraphs
A. The kids’ improvement in math. B. The kids’ love for the machines.
C. The easy operation of pedaling. D. The importance of exercising.
21. What is the text mainly about
A. The school helps students concentrate on class.
B. A new way of exercising is becoming popular.
C. How a machine changes students’ performance in class.
D. How students in a North Carolina school have class.
D
After entering high school, you may find there are many clubs (俱乐部) at your school. You may think you’re too busy to join one. But as a former high school student, I can tell you joining a school club can greatly benefit (有益于) you.
Your old friends may have left you after entering high school. And it means you need to meet new people. Joining a club allows you to talk with others and find those who have similar interests as you. Based on my experience, I have met some of my best friends from club activities which opened up many new doors for me.
Another really nice thing about joining a club is that it looks really good on your applications (申请书). Trying new things is something that looks really good on any application. Being outgoing is considered a very good quality, which shows that you are determined and willing to put yourself out there and best of all try new things. What’s more, it can help you develop skills that can serve you during future college interviews.
Besides, joining a club can make students use their free time wisely. Most teens go to schools, then go back home and spend the rest of the day in front of a screen. Teens are also very likely to fall into the wrong crowd, which could lead to some bad results. Clubs are good places to spend time, with good people to fall back on.
The most important reason why you should join a club is the long-term benefits it brings. The classroom isn’t the only learning environment in a school. The skills you learn in clubs are necessary ones that can be used in everyday life, which I think is the final goal of joining a club. Things such as meeting and speaking to new people, making the most of time, and being organized are those you will meet every single day of your life, but you can learn all of them in clubs.
So if you haven’t joined a school club yet, you know what you should do now.
22. What can we learn from the second paragraph
A. Friends should share common interest. B. Joining a club helps one make friends.
C. Joining a club benefits one’s mental health. D. Friends may leave each other sooner or later.
23 What does Paragraph 4 imply(暗示)
A. Teens today aren’t so interested in joining clubs.
B. Some classrooms are not big enough for students.
C. Doing club activities can help teens attend a good university.
D. Joining a club helps keep students away from doing bad things.
24. In the author’s opinion, what’s the greatest benefit of joining a club
A. Developing new hobbies. B. Meeting different people.
C. Getting useful life skills. D. Making use of your free time.
25. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To give tips on making new friends.
B. To show ways to set up school clubs.
C. To teach students to enjoy a better school life.
D. To encourage high school students to join a club.

Bear 747, also known as “Bear Force One”, took the first-place spot with 68,105 votes. It weighed around 1,400 pounds.
Sofia Fedele, one of Lambeth’s students, said cycling helped her focus on her work during class.
【答案】18. A 19. D 20. B 21. C

23. What does Paragraph 4 imply(暗示)
