In order to help discover spoilage and reduce food waste for supermarkets and consumers, researchers have developed new low-cost, smart phone-linked, eco-friendly spoilage sensors for meat and fish packaging.
One in three UK consumers throw away food just because it reaches the use-by date, but 60% of the 12.5 billion-worth of food we throw away each year is safe to eat.
The researchers, whose findings were published in ACS Sensors, say the sensors could also eventually replace the use-by date—a widely used indicator of being fresh and eatable.
The sensors cost two US cents each to make. Known as “paper-based electrical gas sensors (PEGS)”, they detect spoilage gases like ammonia (a poisonous gas with a strong unpleasant smell) in meat and fish products. The information provided by the electronic nose is received by a smart phone, and then you can know whether the food is fresh and safe to eat.
The Imperial College London researchers who developed PEGS made the sensors by printing carbon electrodes onto a special type of paper. The materials are eco-friendly and harmless, so they don’t damage the environment and are safe to use in food packaging. The sensors, combined with a tiny electronic system, then inform nearby mobile devices, which identify and understand the data about spoilage gases.
Lead author Dr Firat Guder of Imperial’s Department of Bioengineering said, “Although they’re designed to keep us safe, use-by dates can lead to eatable food being thrown away. They don’t always reflect its actual freshness. In fact, people often get sick from food-borne diseases due to poor storage, even when an item is within its use-by date.”
“These sensors are cheap enough so we hope to see supermarkets using them within three years. Our goal is to use PEGS in food packaging to reduce unnecessary food waste.”
The authors hope that PEGS could have applications beyond food processing, like sensing chemicals in agriculture, air quality, and detecting disease markers in breath like those involved in kidney disease.
4. What is the function of PEGS according to the text
A. To improve the taste of foods. B. To improve the service of stores.
C. To help supermarkets store foods. D. To help people test food freshness.
5. What role does the smartphone play while PEGS are functioning
A. It acts as an electronic nose. B. It reads the data collected by PEGS.
C. It helps print the gas sensors onto paper. D. It discovers the spoilage gases from foods.
6. What does Dr. Firat Guder say about use-by dates
A. They are not completely reliable. B. They can help reduce food waste.
C. They are based on scientific research. D. They are not accepted by the consumers.
7. What does the author mainly talk about in the text
A. The process of researching spoilage sensors.
B. A new technology in packaging to reduce food waste.
C. The application of spoilage sensors beyond food processing.
D. The influence of use-by dates on supermarkets and consumers.
C
At the age of 14, James Harrison had a major chest operation and he required 13 units(3.4 gallons)of blood afterwards. The blood donations saved his life, and he decided that once he turned 18, he would begin donating blood as regularly as he could.
More than 60 years and almost 1, 200 donations later, Harrison, whose blood contains an antibody(抗体)that has saved the lives of 2.4 million babies from miscarriages(流产), retired as a blood donor on May 11. Harrison’s blood is valuable because he naturally produces Rh-negative blood, which contains Rh-positive antibodies. His blood has been used to create anti-D in Australia since 1967.
“Every bottle of Anti-D ever made in Australia has James in it,” Robyn Barlow, the Rh program director told the Sydney Morning Herald. “It’s an amazing thing. He has saved millions of babies. I cry just thinking about it.” Since then, Harrison has donated between 500 and 800 milliliters of blood almost every week. He’s made 1,162 donations from his right arm and 10 from his left.
“I’d keep going if they let me,” Harrison told the Herald. His doctors said it was time to stop the donations—and they certainly don’t take them lightly. They had already extended the age limit for blood donations for him, and they’re cutting him off now to protect his health. He made his final donation surrounded by some of the mothers and babies who his blood helped save.
Harrison’s retirement is a blow to the Rh treatment program in Australia. Only 160 donors support the program, and finding new donors has proven to be difficult. But Harrison’s retirement from giving blood doesn’t mean he’s completely out of the game. Scientists are collecting and cataloging his DNA to create a library of antibodies and white blood cells that could be the future of the anti-D program in Australia.
8. What do we know about James Harrison
A. He saved 2. 4 million poor people. B. He is to retire as a blood donor.
C. He is a very grateful blood donor. D. He donates blood nearly every day.
9. What is the author’s purpose of writing Paragraph 4
A. To state Harrison’s decision to continue donating blood.
B. To introduce some babies saved by Harrison’s blood.
C. To describe how Harrison’s donations come to an end.
D. To praise Harrison for his cooperation with the doctors.
10. What can we infer from the passage about Harrison
A. After his retirement, the Rh program will fail.
B New donors are easy to find in a short time.
C. His DNA is kept in a library for future study.
D. He continues to contribute to the Rh program.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. The Man with the Golden Arm B. The Blood Saving Millions of Babies
C. A Special Blood Type Donor to Retire D. A Unique Man with a Rare Blood Type
D
As an astronomer(天文学家), I am accustomed to observing the universe in quiet places. I observe galaxies in the deep universe-places so far away that their light takes billions of years to reach our eyes.
Sometimes I wonder what our own galaxy looked like billions of years ago, before solar system was born. I often stare at the Hubble Deep Field(哈勃深空区)searching for clues: galaxies colliding(碰撞), stars exploding, and stellar nurseries. Can looking to the stars bring us closer together
A couple of months ago, Betelgeuse, a bright star in the Orion constellation(猎户座)started to get dimmer and dimmer. Astronomers all over the world thought this might be a signal that the star was about to explode. Though it might not happen for another 1000 years or more, still I went outside every night to check it out. I was hoping that it would explode. Imagine seeing a star shining as bright as the full moon even during the day.
I started dreaming about using such an event to remind everyone that stars produce nearly all of the chemical elements in the universe, which came directly out of the Big Bang. Everything we breathe, touch and see was made inside of stars. The iron in our blood, calcium bones, and almost the entire periodic table are products of stellar evolution.
Betelgeuse did not explode, and more recent observations note that it is actually returning to normal. But nothing is normal here on Earth now. I am beginning to realize that we did not need a star to explode to unite us. All we needed was a common problem.
I am hoping that everyone on the planet is saving some time to contemplate(凝视, 沉思)the universe and to realize we are not alone. No matter where we are or who we are, we are on this planet together. Since we are all made of stars, looking up at the night sky gives us a glimpse of our past and our future, and we can contemplate both together.
12. Why does the author write this article
A. To suggest us thinking about the way human beings live in this world.
B To research into the scientific mystery in the universe with readers.
C. To discuss the proper relationship between human and the universe.
D. To advise others to stare at a potentially exploding star recently.
13. According to the article, Betelgeuse________.
A. is a star the author tracked for years B. will explode in ten thousand years
C. is a normal star which is disappearing D. will produce chemical elements if it explodes
14. “Such an event” underlined in Paragraph 4 refers to________.
A. Betelgeuse’s potential explosion B. Betelgeuse’s getting dimmer and dimmer
C. the author’s checking out every night D. a star’s shining as bright as the sun
15. What’s the best title of this passage
A. What should an astronomer do
B. Should we know more about the universe
C. Getting united is a problem impossible to solve.
D. Looking to the stars can bring us closer together.

FOMO stands for “fear of missing out”. It refers to the nervous or anxious feeling a person gets when they realize they are not attending a social event either because they weren’t invited or they just didn’t feel like going. ____16____ This belief, in turn, can create anxiety and a sense of inferiority. FOMO bothers most teens, especially if they’re often online.
One way for teens to deal with FOMO is to practice what is known as reframing (重塑) thinking. ____17____ Here are some tips on how teens can start to reframe their thinking.
Track negative thoughts and replace them with reasonable ones. One thing teens can do to deal with FOMO is to track their negative thoughts and feelings in a journal. ____18____ Then, they can change their thoughts and replace the negative thoughts with something positive.
____19____ Encourage teens to recognize that they have limited time and cannot possibly be everywhere and do everything. So, naturally, there will be social events that they cannot attend. But this does not mean that they’re necessarily missing out on something.
Turn off the technology and do something else. Turning off the technology seems like a natural cure for FOMO. But just switching the phone off does not erase the feelings that FOMO causes. ____20____ The key is to do something else entirely like reading a book or baking cookies — anything that allows them to focus on something other than social media.
A. Be realistic about availability.
B. In general, FOMO causes people to assume that they have a low social rank.
C. It’s a mental exercise designed to help them look at situations differently.
D. Realize that no one lives a perfect life as described in social media.
E. Teens may still worry about missing out even if they’re not in social media at all.
F. There are some negative consequences of FOMO.
G. This allows them to observe how often they’re feeling negative about themselves.

Baskin was a 20-year-old sophomore at the University of South Carolina whose parents ran small restaurant. As he was the only college student in his family, his family tried their best to support him. Baskin always worked as a waiter in the restaurant to lighten his parents' burdens. He was so hardworking that many customers praised his hospitable service. His parents also appreciated and trusted him a lot.
It was a busy night at the restaurant. After a few guests walked in and sat down, they ordered a bottle of the Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse 2001-a valuable wine worth almost ?6,000.
Having to serve another table, Baskin then asked a workmate to fetch the bottle. However, since the employee was new, she accidentally took the wrong bottle of wine. Instead of the wine that was ordered by the customers, she served the Chateau Pichon Longueville Pomerol 2001, which cost about ?5,000. As the bottles and names were similar, no one noticed the mistake.
Baskin didn't realize the mistake until the customers wanted to order a second bottle after finishing the first one. He checked the order quickly and understood what was wrong. He cleverly suggested they order a different one, without letting them know what had happened, which could give him time to think about how to solve the problem.
Everything seemed normal, but Baskin was lost in thought. "What should I do to solve this problem " he asked himself. If he didn't tell the customers the mistake, he could keep the extra ?1000 secretly. As he was also the cashier of the restaurant, no one would know what happened. ?1000 was the tuition fee for the whole school year and his parents needn't work hard to earn money for him. Or he could use the money to buy his favorite laptop which his parents couldn't afford. This extra money was really a huge temptation to him. But in this way, he would lose his honesty and dignity.

Lead author Dr Firat Guder of Imperial’s Department of Bioengineering, said, “Although they’re designed to keep us safe, use-by dates can lead to eatable food being thrown away.
D 5. B 6. A 7. B

B. New donors are easy to find in a short time.
C 9. C 10. D 11. A

根据文章第一段中“The blood donations saved his life, and he decided that once he turned 18, he would begin donating blood as regularly as he could. (献血救了他的命,他决定一旦满18岁,就开始尽可能有规律地献血。)”可知,献血挽救了他的生命, 他决定一旦年满18岁,就开始尽可能定期献血, 由此可以推知James Harrison 是个非常感恩的献血者。故选C。根据文章第二段中“More than 60 years and almost 1, 200 donations later, Harrison, whose blood contains an antibody (抗体)that has saved the lives of 2.4 million babies from miscarriages (流产), retired as a blood donor on May 11. (哈里森的血液中含有一种抗体,挽救了240万流产婴儿的生命。在他献血60多年,献血近1200次之后,他于5月11日退休。)”可知,他挽救了240万流产婴儿的生命,故排除选项A;也从这句话中得知,他已经不再献血,故排除选项B;根据文章第三段中“Since then, Harrison has donated between 500 and 800 milliliters of blood almost every week. (从那以后,哈里森几乎每周捐献500到800毫升的血液。)”可知,选项D错误。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段““I’d keep going if they let me,” Harrison told the Herald. His doctors said it was time to stop the donations—and they certainly don’t take them lightly. They had already extended the age limit for blood donations for him, and they’re cutting him off now to protect his health. He made his final donation surrounded by some of the mothers and babies who his blood helped save.

B. To research into the scientific mystery in the universe with readers.
C. To discuss the proper relationship between human and the universe.
D. To advise others to stare at a potentially exploding star recently.
13. According to the article, Betelgeuse________.
A. is a star the author tracked for years B. will explode in ten thousand years
C. is a normal star which is disappearing D. will produce chemical elements if it explodes
14. “Such an event” underlined in Paragraph 4 refers to________.
A. Betelgeuse’s potential explosion B. Betelgeuse’s getting dimmer and dimmer
C. the author’s checking out every night D. a star’s shining as bright as the sun
15. What’s the best title of this passage
A. What should an astronomer do
B. Should we know more about the universe
C. Getting united is a problem impossible to solve.
D. Looking to the stars can bring us closer together.
A 13. D 14. A 15. D

根据最后一段“I am hoping that everyone on the planet is saving some time to contemplate (凝视,沉思) the universe and to realize we are not alone. No matter where we are or who we are, we are on this planet together. Since we are all made of stars, looking up at the night sky gives us a glimpse of our past and our future, and we can contemplate both together. (我希望地球上的每个人都能节省一些时间来思考宇宙,并意识到我们并不孤单。不管我们在哪里,不管我们是谁,我们都在这个星球上。因为我们都是由星星组成的,仰望夜空能让我们瞥见我们的过去和未来,我们可以一起思考这两者。)”可以推知, 作者建议我们思考人类在这个世界上的生活方式。故选A项。
根据第三段中“A couple of months ago, Betelgeuse, a bright star in the Orion constellation (猎户座)started to get dimmer and dimmer. (几个月前,猎户座中一颗明亮的恒星参宿四开始变得越来越暗。)”可知, Betelgeuse 是颗恒星,根据第四段中“I started dreaming about using such an event to remind everyone that stars produce nearly all of the chemical elements in the universe, which came directly out of the Big Bang. (我开始梦想用 such an event 来提醒大家,恒星产生了宇宙中几乎所有的化学元素,这些元素都直接来自于大爆炸。)”可知, 如果 Betelgeuse发生爆炸,会产生化学元素。故选 D 项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词句上一段(第三段)中“A couple of months ago, Betelgeuse, a bright star in the Orion constellation(猎户座)started to get dimmer and dimmer. Astronomers all over the world thought this might be a signal that the star was about to explode. (几个月前,猎户座中一颗明亮恒星 Betelgeuse 开始变得越来越暗。全世界的天文学家都认为这可能是这颗恒星即将爆炸的信号。)”可知,这颗恒星有潜在的爆炸迹象,再根据划线词句“I started dreaming about using such an event to remind everyone that stars produce nearly all of the chemical elements in the universe, which came directly out of the Big Bang. (我开始梦想用 such an event 来提醒大家, 恒星产生了宇宙中几乎所有的化学元素,这些元素都直接来自于大爆炸。)”可以推知,划线词语即指 Betelgeuse 潜在的爆炸迹象, 作者想用该事件来提醒人们。故选A项。
通读全文,根据倒数第二段“But nothing is normal here on Earth now. I am beginning to realize that we did not need a star to explode to unite us. All we needed was a common problem. (仰望星空可以让我们更加亲密。)”突出主题,表达准确,适合做标题。故选D项。
第二节:(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文, 从所给选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。有两项为多余选项。
B 17. C 18. G 19. A 20. E
根据指代关系可知,空格处句子需为下文“This belief ”提供指代对象,E项“In general, FOMO causes people to assume that they have a low social rank.(一般来说,‘错失恐惧症’会让人们认为自己的社会地位较低)”中“they have a low social rank.”正是“This belief”指代对象,且认为自己的社会地位较低会造成“anxiety and a sense of inferiority(焦虑和自卑)”。故选B。
上文“One way for teens to deal with FOMO is to practice what is known as reframing (重塑) thinking.(青少年应对FOMO的一种方法是练习所谓的重构思维)”提到“reframing (重塑) thinking”这一概念,C 项“It’s a mental exercise designed to help them look at situations differently.(这是一种心理训练, 旨在帮助他们从不同的角度看待情况)”是对这一概念的解释,且句中“look at situations differently”与上文“reframing (重塑) thinking”相照应,指“用另一种方式看待或思考问题”。故选C。
上文“One thing teens can do to deal with FOMO is to track their negative thoughts and feelings in a journal.(青少年可以做的一件事就是在日记中记录他们的消极想法和感受)”建议是青少年用日记的方式记录消极想法和感受,G 项“This allows them to observe how often they’re feeling negative about themselves.(这可以让他们观察到自己产生消极想法和感受的频率)”中This指代的正是“记录消极想法和感受”这种行为,且记录后就能观察到产生消极想法的频率,两句间有顺承关系。故选G 。
根据下文“Encourage teens to recognize that they have limited time and cannot possibly be everywhere and do everything. So, naturally, there will be social events that they cannot attend.(鼓励青少年认识到他们的时间是有限的,不可能无处不在,无所不能。因此,自然会有一些社交活动他们不能参加)”可知,青少年要认识到不是所有社交活动都能参加,因为自己时间有限,所以对参加社交活动的可能性要切合实际。A 项“Be realistic about availability.(对可能性要现实一点)”表达了同样意思,符合语境。故选A。
上文“But just switching the phone off does not erase the feelings that FOMO causes.(但是仅仅关掉手机并不能消除‘错失恐惧症’引起的感觉)”说关掉手机并不能消除“错失恐惧症”引起的焦虑和自卑,E项“Teens may still worry about missing out even if they’re not in social media at all.(即使不使用社交媒体,青少年可能仍然会担心错过机会)”解释了其原因,因为即使关掉手机,不使用社交媒体,青少年可能仍然会担心。故选E 。
