My roommate and I sat very still and held our breath to watch the showdown between ice skates Yuzurn Hanyu of Japan and Nathan Chen of the United States at the Beijing Winter Olympics. But when Mr. Chen launched himself into the air, it wasn’t his quadruple lip(四周跳) that caught my eye—it was the empty seats in the audience behind him. They looked familiar. Those seats were where my parents had stood, my dad holding a video camera to record my daily practice sessions so we could have a review later.
Born and raised in Beijing, I began skating at age 8. I’d seen Chinese pair skaters Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo’s performance at the 2006 winter games in Turin, Italy. They inspired a wave of national pride and made figure skating a mainstream sport in China. I joined the rash. Even though my coach told me I’d started skating too late to get into the top competition, I was convinced that one day I would be just like the skaters I saw on T .
I spent most of my name outside school at the rink(滑冰场). One day, two intense years later, I’d had enough. The pressure was too much. I told my parents I couldn’t do it anymore. Thankfully, they understood and let me stop. Then. I started a new athletic attempt —cross-country——running that I still pursue today. Even so51 still enjoyed watching figure skating on TV from time to time.
Right before COVID-19 lockdowns began, 1 returned home to Beijing over winter break from college in the U.S, In my cupboard I was surprised to find a shiny new pair of figure skates my dad had bought for me. Then, I brought the skates back with me to Boston.
This winter, inspired by the Beijing Olympics, I put on the skates again. I carefully steeped onto the ice at a Boston rink. And this skating felt the way it had when I fell in love with it for the first time. I danced on the ice, realizing that one cannot learn without falling sometimes or often.

A. The shape of the seats. B. Her childhood memory.

As is known to us all, cats are difficult to track. On nearly a weekly basis, my owe cats disappear somewhere in the house, hiding while I fruitlessly tear the place apart and ignore the sinking fear that they may have gotten outside. After some period of time, they just... reappear.
Thanks to a new study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS One, we now know that our cats likely never have the same worries about us. Cats, the study suggests, are able to track their owners’ whereabouts, using only the sound of the human voice.
While researchers have long known that cats possess object permanence, or the ability to recognize the existence of an object even when it is no longer immediately seen, the real-time “tracking” capabilities shown in this study open up new ways to study cats’ minds.
“Fewer research reports have been made about cats’ mental and behavioral mechanisms (机能)than those about dogs’ , Saho Takagi, a doctoral student at Kyoto University and the lead author of the study, wrote in an email to Inside Science.
In a series of three experiments, Takagi’s team observed how cats placed in a familiar room responded to a series of sounds played from speakers located both inside and outside of the room. The first experiment used human voices, the second used the sounds of other cats, and the third used electronic sounds. Takagi found that while the cats had no strong reaction to the electronic or cat sounds, hearing an owner’s voice without the owner present in the room left the cats noticeably confused. The sound of an unfamiliar human’s voice also caused confusion, though not as much as a cat’s owner did.
8. How does the author’s mood change according to paragraph 1
A. From anxiousness to relief.
B. From happiness to terror.
C. From helplessness to craziness.
D. From eagerness to nervousness.

B. They possess a more brilliant mind than dogs.
C. They can keep track of something that is out of sight.
D They have more complex behavioral mechanisms than dogs.
10. Which of the following apparently confused the cats
A. Electronic sounds. B. A stranger’s voice,
C. Other cats’ sounds. D. Their owners’ voice.
11. What would be the best title for the text
A. Cats make sense of their surroundings by sight.
B Cats have different communication skills.
C. Cats locate their owners through hearing.
D. Cats develop a unique relationship with humans.

I’m continuing to exercise regularly, I try to maintain more healthy sleep habits. I find myself checking in mentally to see if I am in a place where the glass of wine is being used as a numbing or coping tool or whether it is purely for enjoyment. I’m trying to spend more time in nature while I am not on the farm because I recognize its positive influence on my well-being.”

A Real Hero
Mindy had a pet dog. She took him for a walk every day. Usually she took him to a park near her house. The park was next to a river. Many people took their dogs there. Almost all the dog owners knew each other. They often stopped and had a talk.
For Mindy, it had been a happy place until a homeless man moved into the park. He usually slept under a tree near the river. He was very dirty. He had no teeth, and his clothes were old. He even sometimes talked to himself. Mindy was a bit frightened. When she went to the park, she tried to stay close to other dog walkers. She was unwilling to meet the scary man.
Then winter came and it was cold and wet in the park. The homeless man didn’t have warm clothes and seemed as if he couldn’t bear to go through the winter.
One morning when Mindy was walking in the park, she encountered the homeless man again. To Mindy’s surprise, he was wearing a warm yellow hat that was quite new and clean. He walked towards her, smiling and pointing at his hat. Mindy was so scared that she ran as quickly as she could. “Mindy!” one of the dog walkers called out to her. It was Alison. Mindy ran towards her.
“Mindy! He is harmless! He won’t hurt you! He just wants to show you his new hat! He is so happy,” explained Alison. But Mindy still felt bad. “I’m sorry, but where did he get the hat ” Mindy asked. “I bought it for him. I saw it in the $2 shop. It is so cold and he is so poor. I wanted to do something for him,” answered Alison. “It’s very kind of you,” said Mindy with a smile.
Over the following few days the weather became even worse. It rained all day and all night, Mindy didn’t want to enter the park. Though she felt OK, she was still afraid of the homeless man. So she just took her dog for a walk along the streets outside the park instead.
注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右;

Those seats were where my parents had stood, my dad holding a video camera to record my daily practice sessions so we could have a review later.(但当陈先生腾空而起时,吸引我眼球的不是他的四周跳,而是他身后观众中的空座位。

9. What have researchers known about cats for a long time
A. They may be lacking in object permanence.
B. They possess a more brilliant mind than dogs.
C. They can keep track of something that is out of sight.
D. They have more complex behavioral mechanisms than dogs.
10. Which of the following apparently confused the cats
A. Electronic sounds. B. A stranger’s voice,
C. Other cats’ sounds. D. Their owners’ voice.
11. What would be the best title for the text
A. Cats make sense of their surroundings by sight.
B. Cats have different communication skills.
C. Cats locate their owners through hearing.
D. Cats develop a unique relationship with humans.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. C

【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是提高学习效率的五种方法。
【16题详解】
空前说“Do you ever find yourself studying really hard for a test but ultimately not doing so well (你是否曾经发现自己为了考试非常努力地学习,但最终却没有取得好成绩?)”可知,有时努力学习了,但效果并不好。由此推知,空处陈述这种现象的原因。E选项“It’s not that you’re not smart—it’s just that you’re studying the wrong way.(这并不是说你不聪明,只是你学习的方法不对)”解释了努力学习,却成绩不好的原因,因此E选项承接上文,符合语境,故选E。
【17题详解】
空前说“If you’re anything like younger me, please stop staring at your notes. Start studying in a more engaging way.(如果你和年轻的我一样,请不要再盯着你的笔记了。开始用一种更有吸引力的方式学习)”,说明接下来要讲具体的方法,C选项“Below are a couple of active studying methods that I found worked best for me.(下面是我发现对我最有效的几个积极的学习方法)”引出了下文的几种方法,因此C选项引起下文,符合语境,故选C。
【18题详解】
空格处是本段的主题句,由空后的“If you’re able to stay focused, studying with a group might be more fun and motivating than studying alone. It’s also great to hear other peopled thoughts on the course material in case there’s anything you missed or misinterpreted.(如果你能够保持专注,和小组一起学习可能比独自学习更有趣,更有动力。听到别人对课程材料的想法也是很好的,以防你错过了什么或误解了什么)”可知,本段主要讲的是要和其他人一起学习,A选项“Study with friends.(和朋友一起学习)”概括了本段的内容,可作为小标题,故选A。
【19题详解】
空前说“The last option is to use a study website.(最后一个选择是使用学习网站)”,空后说“A lot of these sites offer premium versions(很多这样的网站都提供付费版本)”可知,可以利用学习网站学习,而且这种网站很多,但需要付费。
空前说“Studying can be boring, but finding ways to make it more fun can really help you do well on your tests.(学习可能会很无聊,但想办法让学习变得更有趣真的能帮助你在考试中取得好成绩)”可知,不管怎样总有方法可以让我们的学习变好。F选项“So don’t lose motivation — you’ve got this!(所以不要失去动力——你一定能做到!)”对读者进行鼓励,承接上文,总结全文,因此符合语境,故选F。

【答案】My Dream Career
When it comes to dream careers, people’s opinions vary from person to person. As far as I am concerned, being a doctor is my ideal choice. The reasons are as follows.
I was determined to be a doctor as a child. At that time, it was my parents’ influence that contributed to my dream to heal the wounded and rescue the dying. As time went by, the seed was rooted in my heart. When the epidemic struck, seeing the angels in white rushing to the front line, I hardened my determination.
I hold the firm belief that with a willing heart and ongoing efforts I will realize my dream.

【答案】One possible version:
One night when Mindy was watching the TV news, the words “Homeless hero saves a man and a child!” appeared. The newsreader explained how a car crashed into the river next to the park. Though people walking dogs in the park all ran to help, the homeless man ran faster than all of them. He swiftly jumped into the river without hesitation and helped the driver out of the car. Then he managed to pull the child on the back seat out of the car. He saved the little boy as well.
The car driver was moved to tears. He shook the homeless man’s hand tightly and said he could never have lived without his son. He then promised that he would give the homeless man a big sum of money in return to express his thankfulness. But the homeless man shook his head and refused. He said with a shy smile that he just did what anyone else would have done. After hearing the news, Mindy suddenly realized what a real hero the homeless man was. So Mindy decided to do something special as well.
