五、阅读单选
It was the middle of April. A large number of birds were flying northward. Thousands of ducks led the way as they usually do.
But things were different that year. The north winds were very strong. Heavy snowstorms came quite late in the spring. The birds badly needed a place to get out of the storms and to rest during their long flights. Thousands of ducks couldn’t find a place to rest in Nebraska.
At the time a terrible disease that kills birds broke out in Nebraska. Ducks were dying in great numbers. Hawks that lived nearby were spreading the disease to the water birds that landed on the small lakes.
The wildlife workers were not able to stop the terrible disease. As they worried over the dying birds, they suddenly thought of something which was worse. In a few days the whoopers, one of the most beautiful birds, were going to fly across the state.
What would happen if even one of the forty-nine remaining whoopers was to land near the sick birds If a whooper got the disease, it could spread to all the rest.
A bad snowstorm blew over Nebraska as the first whoopers fought their way across the state.
They were forced down by storm. And they landed right in the middle of one of the places where the disease was spreading. A farmer was the first to see the nine whoopers on the lake. The wildlife workers quickly got ready to save the whoopers. They worked for long hours, trying to frighten the birds away to a safe place. They fired guns, but the whoopers didn’t move.
At last it stopped snowing! With a small plane the workers were able to drive all but two of the whoopers to a safe place.
All night long the workers stayed in the cold as they watched over the whoppers. Suddenly, as day began to break, the last two whoppers took off. They were driven by the airplane to a safe place.
Slowly the winds became less strong. The nine whoppers flew off to the north. The wildlife workers were tired but relieved.

If you go to work, you have to travel to the office, work at a desk, do your tasks and then return home. In many ways, it seems like an outdated working practice. 八、阅读回答问题
The world is filled with many interesting sounds. Some are unpleasant to our ears while others are very pleasant to hear. In a single day you probably hear hundreds of different sounds. All sounds are different. Some may be loud. Some are high; others are low. Some sounds are useful. Without sound, we cannot talk or listen to one another. The ringing of the alarm clock wakes people up. The hooting of a car warns people of danger.
Some sounds are harmful. When planes fly low over the land, the very loud sounds can damage the houses. Very loud sounds can even make people deaf. We know sound travels about one kilometre in three seconds. In a thunderstorm you see the lightning first and then hear the thunder. This is because light travels much faster than sound.
Next time you see lightning, count the number of seconds before you hear the thunder. Divide this number by 3. This will tell you how many kilometers away the thunder storm is.
51.All the sounds in the world are pleasant to hear, aren’t they
52.What may happen when planes fly low over the land
53.How fast does sound travel
