On November10th, to increase the students’ awareness of health and help them get rid of the sedentary lifestyle, Hongxing High School organized a mountain climbing activity. Greatly inspired, many students took part in it and had an enjoyable experience.
Having gathered at the playground early, we got on the school bus in excitement. It took us about half an hour to get to the foot of Qinglin Mountain, which was the starting point of our climbing. The fascinating scenery with varieties of green plants and strange rocks was so attractive that many of us students stopped to enjoy it. Seeing us falling behind, the teachers and tour guides encouraged us to follow up with them and stick to our schedule. After 2 hours’ cheerful chatting and mutual support, we eventually reached the top to be able to look down from the peak, admiring the stunning view of both the mountain and the city. It was the refreshing view of the nature surrounding us and modern city landscape down our foot in the distance that left a deep impression on us.
The mountain climbing activity ended up with our singing together on the way back to school. Tired as we were, we felt our time and effort worthwhile, for we had enjoyed a closer relationship with nature and each other. What a wonderful time!东莞外国语学校2023-2024学年高一上学期11月期中考试

Four years ago, Rome Leykin was on his way to work when he accidentally fell onto the tracks of Brooklyn’s train as a subway was approaching. The incident resulted in the loss of both of his legs.
But surprisingly, with the loss of his legs, Leykin gained a new passion for racing. Before his accident, he wasn’t really that athletic. He would just occasionally play basketball. But that all changed after he was introduced to hand cycling. “When I saw it, I was like, ‘Oh, this is great. You don’t even need legs to use it. This is perfect.’” he said. “So, I got on it, I rode and fell in love with it right away.”
Within a few months, he completed the TD Five Boro Bike Tour, a 40-mile ride through New York City. After that, he did his first marathon in 2021. He finished that race in 2 hours and 11 minutes, placing 12th out of 38.
“I’m going to attend this year’s marathon and take on challenges. My hands are on the wheel, my eyes are focused, and I think my time is going to speak for itself.” he said. He’s made a significant commitment to training. He hand cycles at least 13.1 miles a couple times a week and spends a lot of time in the gym.
And he plans to keep pursuing his athlete goals. He wants to complete the Abbott Six-the world’s six largest marathons. One day, he said, he’ll maybe even make the Paralympics.
For those who might be following his journey, he hopes they will take some lessons from his story. “There will be ups and downs but the trend is what’s important. Focus on the good,” he said. “And also, take your big problems and split them into small solutions. And then all of a sudden, your big problems turn into many small wins.”
14. What can we learn about Rome Leykin from paragraph 2
A. He once was an excellent basketball player.
B. He considered hand cycling difficult in the beginning.
C. He made hand cycling more popular among the disabled.
D. He showed an interest in hand cycling the moment he saw it.
15. How did Rome Leykin feel about the coming marathon

C. Open-minded and creative. D. Strong-willed and ambitious.

An earthquake is literally an earth-shattering experience! There you are enjoying an afternoon nap, having a cup of coffee in the morning, or even sleeping on a cold winter night when — WHAM! —the entire crockery (陶器) shelf collapses, and all the plates and cups break into pieces. A painting on the wall nearly knocks you down as it falls.
What should one do in an earthquake The prime-time (黄金时间的) news gives no warning, nor is there a time of year, like the monsoon (季风) season, when an earthquake always occurs. Unlike a tornado or hurricane, there is no known way of predicting an earthquake.
Though about 500,000 earthquakes occur each year, only 100 of them cause damage! However, an earthquake can strike any time of the day or night, so it needs to be prepared for when you have the misfortune of being caught in the middle of one.
If you’ re indoors, stay indoors, unless you’re on the ground floor, where you can easily run outside. The best thing to do if you’ re indoors is to hide under a strong piece of furniture like a bed or desk. Do not head for the stairway if you’ re living on an upper storey, because stairways can collapse.
If you’ re driving, get out of traffic and stop on a wide and open road. Do not stop on a bridge, or in another case, under one. Stay inside your car until the shaking stops. Before you restart driving, look out for fissures (裂缝), breaks in the road, and bumps or cracks. Inside your home, be careful not to turn on the gas until you’ re sure the cylinder (气罐) is safe, and there is no leak.
Avoid using your telephone unless there’ s an emergency. You could be occupying lines that are needed by other people. Lastly, if you’re not trapped or seriously hurt, do not expect fire fighters, army or police to help you. They may be busy rescuing people in greater need than you!
What does the underlined word “collapses” mean in the first paragraph
A. Breaks out. B. Falls down.
C. Cuts down. D. Drops out.
19. From the second paragraph we learn that .
A. Monsoons usually come at certain time of the year
B. There are no known ways to predict hurricanes
C. There are warning signs before earthquakes strike
D. A tornado can come at any time, and is hard to predict
20. What should you do if you are on the first floor of a building
A. Stay inside.
B. Head for a stairway.
C. Run outside immediately.
D. Hide under a strong piece of furniture.
21. What does the passage mainly tell us about
How to predict earthquakes.
What to do during an earthquake.
The damage an earthquake can cause.
The factors that cause an earthquake.
D
When you set a foot outside of your door to drop trash, go to a social event or go for a walk, thoughts like “I hope I don’t see anyone I know” or “please don’t talk to me” may run through your mind. I’ve also said such things to myself. Sometimes the last thing you want to do is to talk with someone, especially someone new.
Why do we go out of our ways to avoid people Do we think meeting new people is a waste of time Or are we just lazy, thinking that meeting someone new really is a trouble
Communication is the key to life. We have been told that many times. Take the past generations, like our parents, for example. They seem to take full advantage of that whole “communication” idea because they grew up talking face to face while Generation-Y grew up staring at screens. We spend hours of our days sitting on Facebook. We send messages to our friends and think about all of the things we want to say to certain people that we don’t have the courage to do in reality.
Nowadays, we are so caught up in our little circle of friends—our comfort zone. We love it that they laugh at our jokes, understand our feelings and can read our minds. Most importantly, they know when we want to be alone. They just get us.
Holding a conversation with someone new means agreeing with things that you don’t really believe and being someone you think they want you to be—it is, as I said before, a trouble. It takes up so much energy, and at some point or another, it is too tiring.
But meeting new people is important. Life is too short, so meet all the people you can meet, make the effort to go out and laugh. Remember, every “hello” leads to a smile—and a smile is worth a lot.
22. What do we learn about the author
A. He likes to meet someone new. B. He feels stressed out lately.
C. He’s active in attending social events. D. He used to be afraid of talking to others.
23. What’s the problem of Generation-Y in the author’s eyes
A. They are less confident in themselves. B. They rely on the Internet to socialize
C. They have difficulty in communicating. D. They are unwilling to make new friends.
24. Why do many young people avoid meeting new people
A. They think it troublesome. B. They are busy with their study.
C. They fear to disappoint their friends. D. They want to do meaningful work.
25. Why does the author write the text
A. To stress the importance of friends. B. To give tips on how to meet new people.
C. To encourage people to meet new people. D. To display the disadvantages of Generation-Y.
