A few years ago, I was a housewife looking after my kids. One day, my two-year-old 16 pointing at several “stood” color maker pens, cheered excitedly, “Mummy, look! I did 17 .” With the encouragement of such a 18 , he quickly got together another handful of long and thin ball-pens, trying to do the same—making them 19 on the table. Little by little, his face 20 red. 21 he cried out, “Mummy, help!”
22 all the ball-pens in his hand had either sharp or round ends, I said relaxedly, “Mummy 23 help you on this.” But at once he cried loudly and fell to the floor. A moment later, he ran back to the table, and 24 trying to keep the ball-pens standing up.
Without knowing 25 the ball-pens can't stand up, my son accepted the impossibility 26 many times of unsuccessful tries. He put aside all the 27 , and kept only those marker-pens for this standing up “game”. This time he finished in this way again. Clearly, he already learned to let go of this 28 try.
Being persistent(坚持不懈的)is not easy. But sometimes, it is even 29 to let go. In our daily life, perhaps we don't need to face many problems 30 we know how to realize those unlikely achievable goals, and then decisively let go of them right away.

Alwy learned her kitchen skills from her father, Moid, and her grandmother, who taught her how to make traditional Pakistani dishes when she was 8. At her dad’s house in St. Louds Park, Alwy would try cooking with whatever they had on hand. “If we had ground beef in the fridge, I knew how to make a dish quickly,” she said.

People use languages to communicate. Any language has its ways to express people’s minds. One of the ways in common is the use of idioms. An idiom is a group of words. It has a special meaning that is different from the usual meaning. For example, under the weather is an idiom meaning ill. So when people say “I’m under the weather”, they are saying that they’re not feeling well. Another example, in all weathers means in all kinds of weather. So, “There are homeless people sleeping on the streets in all weathers” tells us that homeless people sleep on the streets no matter whether it is cold or hot.
Different languages may have different ways to make idioms. For people who are learning a foreign language, idioms could cause misunderstandings and bring them endless problems. On the other hand if things are done right, idioms can also be a fun way of looking into a new culture and understanding how the people think and talk.
Metaphor(比喻)is often used in idioms. Let’s read the following two examples:
Example 1: It makes my blood(血液)boil(煮沸)when my brother breaks my computer.
Example 2: The night was dark and quiet; my blood ran cold when I heard a strange noise outside on a dark night.
In neither situation above, can our blood reach the point so high or so low in temperature. However, with the situations the two sentences created, it is not difficult to understand the ▲ feeling in the first example and very afraid in the second.
Of course, not all idioms are this easy to understand. When we come to idioms of a foreign language, a good dictionary of idioms is always suggested.
( )38.The passage tells us something about ________in the English language.
A.grammar B.writing C.reading D.idioms
( )39.If your brother tells you he is under the weather, you can advise him to ________.
A.see a doctor B.stay at home
C.take an umbrella D.wear fewer clothes
( )40.Which of the following words can be put in “ ”
A.sad B.angry C.excited D.proud
( )41.What’s the writer’s suggestion when you come to an idiom that you can’t understand
A.We should try to express our minds with it.
B.We should find an interesting way to learn it.
C.We should look it up in a good idiom dictionary.
D.We should create situations to guess its meaning.
(D)
Have you ever shown your photos on your favorite social media(媒体) Or have you expressed your feelings and emotions on your online page If yes, do you know what you have posted on the social medias can cause problems you could not expect
Cathy, who is going to be fifteen, posted online an invitation to her birthday party with her address in it. And guess what! 500 people came to the party, and some even broke the windows and plants, making a total mess of the house. The girl’s birthday party turned into a nightmare(噩梦).
Many teenagers(青少年)think they know everything about social media, and that such a thing could never happen to them. Studies show that each year more than three million young people in the world get into trouble because of their online activities.
So do remember these if you really want to share something online.
Share with care! Not everyone will like what you write online. Think before you post anything. You never know who sees your texts, pictures or videos. Before clicking “post”, you should ask yourself, “How will I feel if my family or teachers see this ” and “How might this post be bad for me in five or ten years from now ”
Be polite when you write! Imagine someone is unfriendly in real life. The same is true of online communication. No one likes it when you “shout” in your messages. If you feel angry or frustrated while you’re writing a message. Read it again later and then send it.
Protect and respect! Never share your passwords with anyone. It’s not wise to post your home or email address online. Don’t say bad things about people. If you get messages like that or see them online, talk to your parents or your teachers.
I’d say none of these things promises 100% online safety, but each will help you to be safer.
