When Donovan Carrillo entered the ice rink at the Beijing Winter Olympics, he was the first Mexican to do so in 30 years. And although he came in 22nd in the free skate, his journey is so inspirational that he can only be viewed as a true champion.
When Carrillo was selected for the Olympics, he described it as “a dream comes true,” according to an article in The New York Times. It came after years of devotion to a sport that is seriously underfunded (资金不足的) in his hometown of Guadalajara in Mexico.
The 22-year-old started his athletic career with gymnastics and diving. However with his parents’ support, he started ice skating, and thankfully his sporting past lent itself nicely to the sport. The only problem was the cost and the lack of facilities. As Carrillo’s father jokingly explains, Mexicans normally associate ice with something you put in a drink and not with the sport. So his son is actually one of the very few young men ice skating in their home country.
In fact, in 2013, while Carrillo was just a teen, his usual ice rink closed and he had nowhere to practice. In the end he had to move to Leon, in Guanajuato, and lived with his coach, Gregorio Nunez, so he could still practice. The move was hard on the whole family, both emotionally and financially, and what was meant to be just a few months away from home turned out to be nine years — nearly half of Carrillo’s life.
The ice skating hero’s story isn’t about medals: it’s about determination and effort. Looking at the Olympian’s face, you can see he’s more than happy. He wants to show what anyone can achieve, even if you don’t have state-of-the-art equipment.
Looking at him glide along the ice rink with ease, it’s hard to imagine that he trained on a small ice rink with substandard ice, and used a run-down skatepark to imagine performing in front of the judges. Carrillo is a young man who’ll jump over any obstacles to achieve his dream and honor his family. And that’s a true champion!
4. Why is Carrillo’s journey considered to be inspirational
A. He made great progress in ice skating. B. He succeeded in the Beijing Winter Olympics.
C. He trained in unfavorable situations. D. He devoted his life to ice skating.
5. What do we know about Donovan Carrillo
A. He started his athletic career with ice skating.
B. He was made by his family to practice diving.
C. He quit his career under his parents’ influence.
D. His previous sports experience was good for his ice skating.
6. What caused Carrillo to move to Leon
A. His being unable to use his usual ice rink.
B. His intention to live far away from his family.
C. His coach living in Leon.
D. His family being in financial difficulties
7. Which of the following can best describe Donovan Carrillo
A. Modest and creative. B. Caring and courageous.
C. Determined and positive. D. Ambitious and cooperative.
C 5. D 6. A 7. C
根据第二段“When Carrillo was selected for the Olympics, he described it as “a dream comes true,” according to an article in The New York Times. It came after years of devotion to a sport that is seriously underfunded (资金不足的) in his hometown of Guadalajara in Mexico.(据《纽约时报》的一篇文章报道,当卡里略被选中参加奥运会时,他形容这是“梦想成真”。
根据第三段中的“He started ice skating-and thankfully his sporting past lent itself nicely to the sport.( 他开始滑冰——谢天谢地,他的运动经历很适合这项运动。)”
根据第四段中的“His usual ice rink closed and he had nowhere to practice. In the end he had to move to Leon(他常去的溜冰场关门了,他没有地方练习。最后他不得不搬到里昂)”可知,Carrillo平常训练的溜冰场关闭了,他没有地方训练了,最终他才不得不搬去Leon。故选A项。
根据第五段中的“The ice skating hero’s story isn’t about medals; it’s about determination and effort. Looking at the Olympian’s face, you can see he’s more than happy.( 这位滑冰英雄的故事与奖牌无关;这是关于决心和努力。看看这位奥运选手的脸,你可以看出他非常高兴。)”可知,Carrillo的故事与奖牌无关,而是关于坚毅和努力的,从他的脸上,你可以看出他非常快乐。由此可推知,Carrillo有坚毅和积极乐观的品质。故选C项。

Time to load up some popular games: new research indicates pigs possess the mental capability to play video games. The study, published in Frontiers in Psychology, tested the ability of four pigs (Hamlet, Omelette, Ebony and Ivory) to play a simple joystick game with their noses, moving a cursor (光标) to four targets on the screen. Although the animals didn’t demonstrate the skills to win a round any time, they did show an understanding of some elementary games. Performing well above chance, the pigs appeared to recognize the movement of the cursor was controlled by the joystick. The fact that they did so well despite a lack of flexible fingers is “extraordinary”, according to the researchers.
“It is no small achievement for an animal to grasp the concept that the behaviour they are performing is having an effect elsewhere. That pigs can do this to any degree should give us pause as to what else they are capable of learning and how such learning may impact them,” said Purdue University’s Dr Candace Croney, the study’s lead author.
Researchers also noted that while the pigs could be taught to play the game using food as positive motivation, they also responded well to social interaction. In fact, when the game was made more challenging and the pigs became unwilling to participate in it, “only oral encouragement by the experimenter” would see training continue.
These findings are the latest to highlight the intelligence of pigs. Not only have they been shown to use mirrors to find hidden food, but studies have also demonstrated how pigs can be taught to “come” and “sit” after oral commands.
As with any sentient (有感觉力的) beings, how we interact with pigs and what we do to them impacts and matters to them. We therefore have a moral duty to understand how pigs acquire information, and what they are capable of learning and remembering, because it ultimately offers the potential for how they understand their interactions with us and their environments.
8. What can be learned from Paragraph 1
A. The pigs sometimes won the video games.
B. The pigs operated joysticks with their noses.
C. The pigs competed with each other in the games.
D. The pigs sometimes performed well accidentally.
9. What does the underlined phrase “give us pause” refer to
A. Stop us from advancing. B. Affect us in learning.
C. Make us think seriously. D. Force us to train pigs better.
10. What made researchers believe pigs socially interacted well
A. Their being inspired by human words.
B. Their being driven by food.
C. Their being willing to keep trying.
D. Their being motivated by challenges.
11. Which of the following could be the best title
A. Smart pigs: good players.
B. Flexible noses: fun games.
C. Oral commands: pig learners.
D. Pig players: learning potential.
B 9. C 10. A 11. D
根据第一段“The study, published in Frontiers in Psychology, tested the ability of four pigs (Hamlet, Omelette, Ebony and Ivory) to play a simple joystick game with their noses, moving a cursor (光标) to four targets on the screen. (这项研究发表在《心理学前沿》上,测试了四只猪(哈姆雷特、煎蛋、乌木和象牙)用鼻子玩简单的操纵杆游戏的能力,将光标移动到屏幕上的四个目标上。)”可知,第一段主要介绍猪能够够用鼻子操作操纵杆,故选B。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“It is no small achievement for an animal to grasp the concept that the behaviour they are performing is having an effect elsewhere. (对于动物来说,能理解它们正在实施的一个行为可以在别处产生影响的概念并不是小成就。)”及“what else they are capable of learning and how such learning may impact them (他们还能学习什么,以及这种学习如何影响他们)”可知,猪能够够用鼻子操作操纵杆,这不是一个小成就,值得我们认真思考,看看猪还能学习什么,以及这种学习如何影响他们。故推知give us pause表示“让我们认真思考”,与Make us think seriously意义一致,故选C。
根据第三段“Researchers also noted that while the pigs could be taught to play the game using food as positive motivation, they also responded well to social interaction. In fact, when the game was made more challenging and the pigs became unwilling to participate in it, “only oral encouragement by the experimenter” would see training continue.
根据第一段“Performing well not by chance, the pigs appeared to recognize the movement of the cursor was controlled by the joystick. The fact that they did so well despite a lack of flexible fingers is “extraordinary”, according to the researchers. (表现良好并非偶然,猪似乎意识到光标的移动是由操纵杆控制的。据研究人员称,尽管缺乏灵活的手指,但他们做得如此之好,这是“不可思议的”。)”及第四段“These findings are the latest to highlight the intelligence of pigs. Not only have they been shown to use mirrors to find hidden food, but studies have also demonstrated how pigs can be taught to “come” and “sit” after oral commands. (这些发现是最新发现的,突出了猪的智力。他们不仅被证明使用镜子来寻找隐藏的食物,而且研究还证明了如何在口头命令后教猪“过来”和“坐下”。)”可知,文章主要讲述猪经过人们的训练和与人互动后,猪可以用鼻子玩电动,能够听懂人的指令,说明猪有很强的学习潜力。所以文章的标题应是Pig Players: learning potential(猪玩家:学习的潜力),故选D。
D
Since the first factories began manufacturing polyester (聚酯) in the 1950s, humans have produced about 9. 1 billion tons of plastic. And about 12 percent has been burnt, releasing harmful gases into the air. Most of the rest has ended up in landfills and in the natural environment. Plastic inhabits the oceans, cities and national parks, in large or tiny pieces.
Carbios is among the companies that are attempting to commercialize a type of chemical recycling, which breaks down polymers into their fundamental moleculars, called monomers (单体). Those monomers can then be recombined into polymers that are as good as new.
But some experts warn that chemical recycling may face many of the same issues that already plague the recycling industry, including competition from cheap plastics made from the raw materials. For the past several years, Carbios has been improving a method that uses an enzyme (酶) found in a microorganism to convert polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a common ingredient in plastic bottles, into its monomers.
Enzymatic recycling’s promise isn’t limited to PET: the approach can be applied to other plastics. In early experiments, it took weeks for enzymes to process just a part of a batch of PET. In 2020, Alain Marty, chief science officer at Carbios, announced they’d developed an enzyme that could stand warmer temperatures and change nearly an entire batch of PET into monomers in a matter of hours.
Most PET produced globally is used for textile fibers, which, because they often contain mixed materials, are rarely recycled. Mats Linder, leader of Stena Recycling in Sweden, said he’d like to see recycling technologies focus on these and other parts of the recycling industry where conventional recycling is coming up short.
As it happens, Carbios is working to do just that. Gregg Beckham, a senior research fellow at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, believes the global plastic problem will call for a diverse mix of technological solutions. He thinks enzymatic recycling and other recycling technologies are advancing rapidly, and he’s optimistic that they’ll have a role to play.
12. What can be inferred from the first paragraph
A. Polyester has been made for a century. B. Most plastic is not recycled.
C. People should stop using plastic. D. Most plastic is buried in landfills.
13. What does the underlined word “plague” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Trouble. B. Inspire. C. Influence. D. Determine.
14. What can we know about enzymatic recycling
A. Many companies have been using this method.
B. Enzymatic recycling can only be used to break down PET.
C. It was Carbios that invented enzymatic recycling.
D. Great progress has been made in enzymatic recycling.
15. What opinion does Gregg Beckham most probably hold
A. Enzymatic recycling is costly but effective.
B. Carbios is the pioneer in recycling plastic.
C. Enzymatic recycling has a bright future.
D. Chemical recycling technologies are limited.
B 13. A 14. D 15. C
根据第一段中的“And about 12 percent has been burnt, releasing harmful gases into the air. Most of the rest has ended up in landfills and in the natural environment.(大约有12%已经燃烧,向空气中释放有害气体。剩下的大部分最终被填埋在垃圾填埋场和自然环境中。)”可知,大约12%的塑料被焚烧,剩下的大多堆积在垃圾填理场和自然环境中。由此可知,大多数的塑料都没有被回收利用,故选B项。
【13题详解】
词义猜测题。根据画线词所在句中的But可知,此处与上文是转折关系,应指出解聚法所面临的不利条件。根据画线词后的“including competition from cheap plastics made from the raw materials.(包括来自廉价塑料原料的竞争。)” 故选A项。
根据第四段最后一句中的“They’d developed an enzyme that could stand warmer temperatures and change nearly an entire batch of PET into monomers in a matter of hours.(他们开发了一种酶,这种酶可以承受更高的温度,并在几小时内将几乎一整批PET转化为单体。)”
根据最后一段最后一句“He thinks enzymatic recycling and other recycling technologies are advancing rapidly, and he’s optimistic that they’ll have a role to play.( 他认为酶回收和其他回收技术正在迅速发展,他乐观地认为它们将发挥作用。)”

One of the qualities of a great leader is the ability to make a decision and to live with it. ____16____ Here are a few points that can help you make the right decision.
____17____
In most cases you don’t need to make a decision right away, so take your time and analyze every aspect of the situation. If your decision affects other people, try to put yourself in their shoes to see how they would feel about it. Try to think about their objections and if they would appreciate it, as this can help you figure out whether your idea is right or wrong.
Don’t look back.
Once you’ve taken all the necessary steps in making the right decision, don’t look back. ____18____ For example, let’s say you want to quit smoking. If you never tell yourself that you will smoke again, chances are that you won’t. However, if you open the door in your mind that only one cigarette won’t hurt, then chances are that you will not be able to quit. ____19____
Talk to people and seek advice.
It’s good to get help from our peers. For decision making, you can also look for help, but do not ask someone to make the decision for you. ____20____ Most of the time, we are afraid of the outcome because it’s unknown. This is normal and we need to learn to overcome that.
A. Believe it’s the best choice and never open the door in your mind to change it.
B. Trust your peers’ judgements and decisions every now and then.
C. When it comes to the decision making in the life, you should be determined.
D. Ultimately, you’ll have to make the decision yourself with the gathered information.
E. Look at every aspect of the problem before making the decision.
F. However, most of us are incapable of making decisions and sticking by them.
G. Our thoughts are not only our greatest friend but also our most powerful enemy.
F 17. E 18. A 19. G 20. D
根据下文“Here are a few points that can help you make the right decision.(这里有几点可以帮助你做出正确的决定。)”中“help you make the right decision”可知,做出正确的决定并不容易,需要策略,给F项“However, most of us are incapable of making decisions and sticking by them.(然而,我们大多数人都没有能力做出决定并坚持下去。)”
根据下文“In most cases you don’t need to make a decision right away, so take your time and analyze every aspect of the situation. If your decision affects other people, try to put yourself in their shoes to see how they would feel about it. Try to think about their objections and if they would appreciate it, as this can help you figure out whether your idea is right or wrong.(在大多数情况下,你不需要马上做出决定,所以花点时间分析情况的各个方面。如果你的决定影响到其他人,试着设身处地地为他们着想,看看他们会怎么想。试着想想他们的反对意见,看看他们是否会欣赏,因为这可以帮助你弄清楚你的想法是对还是错。)”可知,本段主要讲不要急于做决定,要全面考虑问题,所以E项“Look at every aspect of the problem before making the decision.(在做决定之前,要全面考虑问题的各个方面。)”
上文“Once you’ve taken all the necessary steps in making the right decision, don’t look back.(一旦你采取了所有必要的步骤来做出正确的决定,就不要回头。)”提出做好决定就不要回头,A项“Believe it’s the best choice and never open the door in your mind to change it.(相信这是最好的选择,永远不要想去改变它。)”承接上文,表达同样的主题,句中“never open the door in your mind to change it”照应上文“don’t look back”,上下文语意连贯。故选A项。
上文“For example, let’s say you want to quit smoking. If you never tell yourself that you will smoke again, chances are that you won’t. However, if you open the door in your mind that only one cigarette won’t hurt, then chances are that you will not be able to quit.(例如,假设你想戒烟。如果你从不告诉自己你会再次吸烟,那么你很有可能不会再吸烟了。然而,如果你在脑海中打开一扇门,认为只抽一支烟不会有什么坏处,那么很有可能你将无法戒烟。)”以戒烟为例说明我们思想可能造成的影响,G项“Our thoughts are not only our greatest friend but also our most powerful enemy.(我们的思想不仅是我们最好的朋友,也是我们最强大的敌人。)”
上文“For decision making, you can also look for help, but do not ask someone to make the decision for you.(在做决定时,你也可以寻求帮助,但不要让别人帮你做决定。)”提出可以寻求帮助,但不能让别人帮你做决定,D项“Ultimately, you’ll have to make the decision yourself with the gathered information.(最终,你必须根据收集到的信息自己做出决定。)”

In March of 1994, I was 25 years old, poor and pregnant. It was 10 days past my due date. I was dependent on public transportation to get to my prenatal (产前的) appointments. That day I was going with my husband to the hospital for an ultrasound (超声波) scan.
We were excited and happy, thinking a new life would come into our world soon. To reach the bus stop, we had to cross a busy street. While we were standing on the opposite side of the street waiting for a break in traffic, we saw the bus coming. There was a huge rush of traffic just then, and no way to cross the street in time.
We began shouting loudly and waving wildly trying to flag down the driver. But the driver didn’t notice us, since her face wasn’t turned toward us. She drove quickly past the stop and down the street. Traffic cleared up immediately after this and we were able to cross the street. But it was a moment too late.
We were very anxious because this was the last bus we could have caught to get to my appointment on time. The hospital was very strict about its appointment policy— if you were ten minutes late, you had to reschedule. Rescheduling meant I had to wait a day or more. I was close to tears, about to say “Let’s go home” when a police car stopped in front of us. The officer had apparently seen the whole process, and said with a smile “Hop in- let’s catch the bus!”
We’d never been in trouble nor were we thieves, but we naturally felt uneasy about most authority figures like policemen. So it was a shock to receive this offer of help from an unlikely source! Should we accept such help We hesitated for a second. Then we got in the car, and the officer sped toward our runaway bus.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 2:
I gave birth to a healthy girl the following morning.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
We caught up with the bus soon. It paused at another bus stop in less than a minute. The officer stopped in front of the bus, and turned on his flashing lights. I was excited. I barely managed to thank him as we boarded the bus. It was fortunate that we made our appointment on time and the ultrasound scan showed that I needed to be admitted to hospital immediately. The doctors told me that if I had not come that day, my baby could have been in great danger.
Paragraph 2:
I gave birth to a healthy girl the following morning. Two months later, I recovered and I took my baby daughter to the street to thank the officer. It was a pity that he wasn’t there. My experience changed my view about policemen. That officer took time out from his important duties to help a pregnant lady reach her destination and, though he didn’t know it, to help a new life come into the world. I didn’t ask his name, and I barely remember what he looks like. But that happy smile he wore will stay with me for the rest of my life.

However, with his parents’ support, he started ice skating, and thankfully his sporting past lent itself nicely to the sport.
B His intention to live far away from his family.
C. His coach living in Leon.
D. His family being in financial difficulties
7. Which of the following can best describe Donovan Carrillo
A. Modest and creative. B. Caring and courageous.
C. Determined and positive. D. Ambitious and cooperative.
