Unit 1 Growing up
第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分35分)
第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
When I started school, my hands kept shaking. I went to a doctor and was told that I had a nervous system disorder that can cause a person's hands to shake. I had no idea what I was going to do. One day, I saw a woodcock outside my apartment window, and I had never seen anything like it. So I read about the bird online and took an ornithology (鸟类学) class. The professor asked me if I was doing research. I had no idea that undergraduates could even do anything like that. That professor became my undergraduate advisor, and I started working in her lab. She was also my PhD advisor. I stayed in her lab for 11 years.
Now I have a paper coming out soon that looks at the global diversity (多样性) of parrots (鹦鹉). One figure in it is, I think, the best thing I've ever done. It shows the family tree of parrots, over a picture of Gondwana breaking up. Gondwana is the supercontinent that South America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand all used to be part of. As that broke up into the continents that we know better now, some families of parrots parted.
My biggest failure in science thus far is my inability to explain how the Carolina parakeet went extinct. I've been working on this for seven years. I've read lots of historical books and travel diaries. And I never figured it out.
That's the thing about science. Most of the time, you start out with a really clear idea of what you think is going to happen. And it almost never happens that way. I've got a lot out of this research. I've learned a lot about the species. But there are just some things that we'll never know. Finally, I have to accept that maybe I'll figure it out one day, maybe I won't. But that's OK.
21. What made the author take up ornithology research
A. The doctor's words.
B. The help of a professor.
C. The beauty of a woodcock.
D. The difficulty of finding a job.
22. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. The bird.
B. The failure.
C. The extinction.
D. The travel diary.
23. What does the author think of this research
A. It is costly.
B. It is worth doing.
C. It is discouraging.
D. It is easy to carry out.
B
When is a kid not a kid anymore If you asked my 12-year-old daughter, the magical age would be 13, when you can no longer be considered a “child.” If you asked my 15-year-old niece, the age would be 16, when she will be able to drive a car and get an after-school job. According to the U. S. government, a child officially becomes an adult when they turn 18. That's when they can vote. But even though an 18-year-old starts paying taxes, the government does not consider that person mature enough to buy a beer. Still, even a kid who can buy a beer is not old enough to rent a car.
Scientists have learned from a new study that when kids are around 18, their prefrontal cortex, which helps control impulses ( 冲动), solve problems, and organize behavior, is only halfway developed. That's not to say that kids in their late teens and early 20s can't take on these tasks, but it means that it's harder for them to do so — at least until around age 25 or so when this area of the brain fully develops.
“What we're really saying is that to have a definition (定义) of when you move from childhood to adulthood looks absurd,” Peter Jones from the University of Cambridge said. “It's a much more nuanced (微妙的) change that takes place over thirty years.”
This isn't a news flash for parents who have watched their teens take crazy risks while seeming unable to get their lives together until they're older. But this information throws new light on the way kids without as much support are treated. In the foster (寄养的) care system, once a child turns 18, he can no longer receive state-backed support. And many people think this is too early for a teen to be on his own, especially a teen who has experienced a painful childhood. Because of this, some foster care advocates (提倡者) think it makes more sense for 25 to be the new legal age of adulthood.
24. What does the author want to show us in Paragraph 1
A. Different age groups have different needs.
B. Becoming an adult means you can do a lot of things.
C. People have different opinions on becoming an adult.
D. Children need to learn basic life skills to become an adult.
25. What might be the purpose of the study
A. To explain why teenagers are at risk.
B. To suggest a way of helping teenagers develop.
C. To explore the characteristics of different age groups.
D. To discover when the human brain is fully developed.
26. What does the underlined word “absurd” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Impossible.
B. Invaluable.
C. Unreasonable.
D. Uninteresting.
27. What influence may the study have
A. It may inspire teens to be independent.
B. It may allow a 20-year-old to get government support.
C. It may drive the government to protect the foster care system.
D. It may encourage parents to stop supporting their children at college.
C
Like most parents my age, I have memories of childhood so different from the way my children are growing up. I grew up on a block of six-story apartment buildings in Queens, New York. In my primary school years, my friends and I spent a lot of afternoons playing cops and robbers (警察抓小偷). Once, when I was about 9, my friend Kim and I “locked” a couple of younger kids in an imaginary prison. Then Kim and I got hungry and walked over to a restaurant and forgot all about them. When we got back an hour later, they were still standing in the same spot. They never jumped over the gate even though they easily could have; their parents never came looking for them. A couple of them were upset, but back then, the code (法则) between kids ruled. We'd told them they were in prison, so they stayed in prison. A parent's opinion would have been unimportant.
I used to puzzle over it: even though women work more hours now than they did in the 1970s, mothers spend much more time with their children than they used to. My mother didn't work all that much when I was younger, but she didn't spend great amounts of time with me, either. She didn't arrange (安排) my play dates or drive me to swimming lessons. On weekdays after school she just expected me to show up for dinner; on weekends I seldom saw her at all. When my daughter was about 10, my husband suddenly realized that in her whole life, she had probably not spent more than 10 minutes unattended by us, teachers or grandparents.
Actions that would have been considered paranoid (多疑的) in the 1970s — walking third-graders to school, preventing your kid from playing ball in the street — are now common. In fact, they are the markers of good, responsible parenting. When you ask parents why they are more protective than their parents were, they might answer that the world is more dangerous than it was when they were growing up. But this isn't true. Parents' fears are putting kids in a situation where they can't grow up. Parents need to let go of their kids.
28. Why did the younger kids stay still in the imaginary prison
A. They found it hard to get out.
B. They were too happy to leave.
C. They wanted to play a fair game.
D. They waited for their parents to save them.
29. What was the author's mother like in the 1970s
A. She spent less time with her kids than people do now.
B. She encouraged the author to play more.
C. She was the author's good company.
D. She worked very hard every day.
30. What did people think of parents walking kids to school in the 1970s
A. They were overly worried.
B. They helped kids grow up.
C. They were responsible parents.
D. They had nothing more important to do.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
For most people, it is clear: When you are a kid and you're sick, you go to the doctor. As you get older, you work with new doctors who treat adults.
31 I am 30 years old, and I am still a patient at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford. My conditions are so bad that they require the care of specialists who have been with me since early childhood. Beyond my medical care, these specialists have been supporting me in a bigger way: 32
I was born with a birth defect (先天性缺陷), which led to frequent hospitalization throughout my childhood. After my mom's death, I was placed in foster care (寄养照管). 33 This experience taught me to advocate for (支持) myself and to ask questions so I could be part of the decisions for my own care.
My nurses and doctors were concerned about my lack of parental support, so they gave me what felt like a family. 34 But I always came back to my doctors at Packard Children's. They were able to treat my complexities. Also, I've always felt this was a place where my voice was respected.
Thanks to the care I received at Packard Children's, I was inspired to become a nurse.
I've paved the way for myself, and I hope that through my work as a nurse I will be able to pay forward the care I've experienced throughout my life. I've always said, “ 35 ”
A. I had a similar experience.
B. They have become my family.
C. If you can't beat them, join them.
D. For me, however, this hasn't been the case.
E. When I was in my twenties, I started to see adult specialists.
F. You can't always control what you are given in life, but you can control what you do with it.
G. I'd hear other families comforting their children as I sat alone, with only machines beside me.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I found myself dealing with worries right before the new school year started.
My neighbor Ollie and I were skateboarding in the park when we happened to see some kids from my school.
“I wish summer wasn't ending,” said Rose. “But at least I'll be in Ms. Ramirez's class. My brother had her last year. She's so nice.”
“I got Mr. Nishimoto,” said Jack. “I've heard he brings his guitar and plays funny songs.”
“I'd love to have a singing teacher!” I said. “I have Ms. Newman, and I know nothing about her.”
“Oh no!” said Alex. “I'm sure she's the one people call the mean, green homework machine.”
“I don't listen to rumors (谣言),” I said with a smile. But part of me thought, “What if what Alex said is true ” And that's when the worry button got pushed in my brain. And as you know, once the worry button gets pushed, one worry can turn into lots and lots of worries surprisingly quickly.
That night, I had a wild dream. I was searching for my perfect first-day-of-school suit (套装), but a hungry goat got to it first and ate it up. So I was stuck wearing the only thing left in my house — a swimsuit.
So how does someone wearing a swimsuit get to school By swimming, of course. And since swimming through the busy streets of San Francisco isn't easy, I arrived at school really late. By the time I made it to my classroom, it was almost lunchtime.
“You're late!” shouted a terrible green monster (怪兽). “Now you'll have to do ten times as much homework! Every night, forever!”
I woke up with my heart racing.
That afternoon, Ollie's grandma, Abuela, asked if I was looking forward to school starting.
“Um, not exactly,” I said. And I started describing my frightening dream. The more I described it, the sillier it sounded. By the end of my story, Ollie, Abuela, and I were laughing so hard that we could hardly catch our breath.

1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

应用文写作
One possible version:
Dear Judy,
Thanks for the invitation to your coming-of-age ceremony on September 18th.
I know celebrating Coming-of-Age Day is a significant event in one's life but I have never attended one. Thank you for giving me this chance and I'd love to come. Congratulations in advance! You'll no longer be a child but an adult!
Please let me know if there's anything I can bring or I can do to help. And does the party have a dress code
Thanks again, and see you on the 18th.
Yours,
Li Hua
读后续写
One possible version:
Abuela said she thought there might be some information about the teachers on our school's website. She suggested I do a little research. On the website, we finally found a picture of Ms. Newman, who was actually a smiling human, not a terrible monster. Beside her photo was a description of her hobbies and her pet dog. The minute I learned some facts about my new teacher was the minute my worry button finally switched off.
Abuela also suggested I make a list of my worries, and that helped too. Being able to see my worries on paper made it much easier to talk about them and to plan ahead. I realized I needed to prepare something for my school a few days early. I also made sure I knew exactly when the school bus would arrive, and I printed out a map of the school with directions to my new classroom. And I was sure my school life was going to be just fine once I got used to it.

33. G。根据上一句After my mom's death, I was placed in foster care可知,作者的母亲去世后,作者无人照顾,G项提到作者独自一人在医院的经历:听到别的家长安慰孩子,自己却孤身一人,只有机器陪着自己,与下一句This experience taught me to advocate for myself and to ask questions so I could be part of the decisions for my own care前后呼应,指出正是因为没有家人陪伴的孤独经历,让作者变得很独立,学会了为自己做主。
34. E。根据下一句中的But可知,前后两句之间为转折关系,E项提到作者长大后,开始看成人医生,这与下一句“但是‘我’却依然常常回到儿童医院看自己的儿童医生”是转折关系,符合此处语境。
