Whether you are hoping to relax or you are looking forward to staying active in vacation, seeking out great hikes is a good choice. If you are planning a trip to southern California, or you live in San Diego, now it is time to search for new hiking trails (路线). Here are some of the most popular hikes in San Diego.
Cedar Greek Falls
For this hike, you’ll hike from the Cedar Creek Falls to the Devil's Punch Bowl, which is a pool at the base of Cedar Creek Falls. It can really heat up in the summer, and it is hard to hike, so be sure to pack lots of water and protein-filled snacks.
Cuyamaca Peak (顶峰)
The peak is in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, and you’ll see plenty of snow-capped trees if you do this hike in the winter. There are 37 trails in the state park, but you’ll want to stick to Azalea Glen Loop. It’s a difficult seven-mile hike that will bring you right to Cuyamaca Peak.
Cowles Mountain
It is well known that Cowles Mountain is the highest point in San Diego—so it’s worth visiting for the fact that you can see Mexico from the peak. The three-mile hike is quite difficult. If you are willing to wake up before the sun, Cowles Mountain is a beautiful spot to watch the sunrise. It’s one of San Diego’s most popular hikes, so starting early might also help avoid the crowds.
Swami’s Beach
Take the trail from Swami’s Beach to Cardiff Beach and you will experience impressive ocean views and the smooth sound of waves crashing onto the sand. As an easy out-and-back hike, the path is accessible (可进入的) from Swami’s Beach and is about three miles in total.
What do you need to take if you choose the Cedar Creek Falls
A. A raincoat. B. An umbrella. C. Food and water. D. A hat and a map.
What is Cowles Mountain famous for
A. The difficult hiking trail. B. Being the peak in San Diego.
C. The beautiful sunrise. D. The great length of the trail.
Which hiking trail will you choose if you want to see the sea
A. Cedar Greek Falls. B. Cuyamaca Peak. C. Cowles Mountain. D. Swami’s Beach

Recently whenever I turned on my computer or my mobile phone, news about the great effect of Hurricane Harvey(哈维飓风)on thousands of people caught my eye. I saw many unfortunate events. However, there was also the bright news that confirmed the goodness of mankind. As a reporter, I reported many human-interest stories when doing my job, That’s why the story about the guys in the bakery(面包店)caught my eye.
When the workers at a Mexican bakery chain in Houston were trapped inside the building for two days, they didn't sit there feeling sorry for themselves. They used their time wisely after flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. While waiting for the eventual rescue that came on Monday morning, the four workers decided to make as many loaves of bread as possible for people around the neighborhood. They talked to their manager about their plan over the phone and the manager agreed.
The flood water rose in the street outside. They took advantage of their emergency power supply to bake bread. They used more than 4,200 pounds of flour(面粉)to create hundreds of loaves and sheets of sweet bread. Although the water kept rising, they continued baking to help more people. By the time the manager managed to get to them, they had made so much bread that they took the loaves to lots of emergency centers across the city for people affected by the floods.
The store manager, Brian Alvarado, told The Independent, “They've done more than they should have done. And what they had done has lit a light for people. I feel lucky to have them work in the bakery.”
Whenever a disaster occurs, nobody should feel forlorn. Instead, we should stay hopeful and take positive action to save ourselves and help others. Our acts of kindness will make a big difference to the people in the world as well as the world itself.
Why did the story in the bakery draw the author’s attention
A. It was helpful in choosing a good job. B. It made him/her interested in baking.
C. It could bring him/her much money. D. It showed the goodness of mankind.
What did the guys in the bakery do in the disaster
A. They tried to get people out of water. B. They set up emergency centers to help.
C. They offered to make bread for people. D. They let homeless people live in the bakery.
What does Brian Alvarado think of the four workers
A. He found them lucky. B. He was proud of them.
C. They were experienced. D. They were shy but brave.
What does the underlined word “forlorn” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Hopeless. B. Confident. C. Serious. D. Angry.
C
People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though they have lifespans that arc similar to humans, living for around 50 to 70 years.
Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago, US has found that elephants carry a large number of genes that stop tumors developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy.
According to the research, the extra copies of the gene improved the animal's sensitivity to DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors.
“An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution of large body sizes in many animals,“ the study author Dr Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous, large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and mice. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.
This phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s and later named "Peto's paradox". Biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not. In the elephant's case, the making of TP53 is nature's way of keeping this species alive.
The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in mice, they had the same cancer resistance as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancers spreading or even developing in the first place.
“Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer," said Joshua Schiff-man, a biologist at the School of Medicine, University of Utah, US. "It's up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people."
Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer
They have a rather large body size.
Their genes suffer no DNA damage.
Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors.
They carry many genes to prevent tumors developing.
According to the passage, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals
A. Deadly tumors. B. The huge body mass.
C. Cells killing themselves. D. Sensitivity to DNA damage.
What does the underlined “This phenomenon" in Paragraph 5 probably refer to
Larger animals have protection from TP53.
The risk of cancer is not related to body size.
Larger animals have a longer lifespan.
The larger animals are, the bigger risk of cancer they will have.
What can be concluded from the passage
Depending on nature is surely enough to fight against cancer.
The TP53 genes have proved useful in stopping cancer in people.
Scientists will probably research into TP53 to help people fight against cancer.
The extra copies of elephant genes are used to cure patients suffering cancer.
D
Doctors say you had better use it before you lose it. The more you sit each day, the more chance you have of getting sick.
Richard Rosenkranz of Kansas State University was among the researchers. He said people who sat for long periods were at great risk of diseases when compared with those who sat less. He said that was especially true for some chronic (慢性的) diseases.
Richard Rosenkranz studied the relationship between sitting and chronic diseases in middle-aged
Australian men. He worked with researchers from the University of Western Sydney. They examined the health records of more than 63,000 men from New South Wales. The men were between the ages of 45 and 65. The men reported about what diseases they had, or did not have. And they kept record of the amount of time each day that they sat.
The study also showed that exercising every morning for 30minutes did not reduce the health risk if you spend the next eight hours sitting at the desk. Mr. Rosenkranz said it was important to make sure you exercise. But he said it was also important to find ways not to sit so much during the day.
Many jobs today require sitting and working at the desk all day. James Levine works at the Mayo Clinic in the United Sates. He suggests working while standing at high table some of the time instead of sitting at a desk. Dr. Levine also suggests standing while using the telephone or eating. Or he advises walking with the people you work with for an on-foot meeting. And he notes that if you spend more time on your feet, you may have muscle activity that helps burn fats and sugars in your body.
The underlined sentence in the first paragraph implies that .
doctors should treat all the patients well
doctors should make use of every method
one should value his health before he loses it
one should depend on himself to keep healthy
How did Richard Rosenkranz make the study
A. By examining some records and reports. B. By making some laboratory experiments.
C. By talking with the doctors and patients. D. By watching the men’s daily performance.
According to Dr. Levine, in order to avoid the harm of long-time sitting, one should .
A. exercise more often B. change his job
C. stay away from the desk D. stand or walk more
Where does this text probably come from
A. A fashion magazine B. A health magazine
C. A biology textbook D. A life guide

How to manage your time
For many high school students it seems that there is never enough time. There are several steps
you can take to organize your time better.
First, make a to-do list every day. It makes it easy to plan any activities or meetings you may have in addition to homework. Be sure to set priorities(优先的事物). 36 .
Use spare time wisely. Do you have time for self-study Instead of wasting that time, read a book or do homework. 37 If a friend asks you to do something and you have homework to do, realize which is more important and see your friend later.
Decide on the time that is good for you to do certain things. If you are more of a morning person, try getting up an hour earlier and do schoolwork before school. Review your notes every day. 38 If you spend a few minutes at the end of every day going over what you learned, it will mean less time studying when it is time for the exam.
39 Studies have shown that getting enough rest helps your memory. When you are tired, everything seems more difficult. It is best to stay on a regular sleeping cycle as much as possible.
Tell your friends and family about your work timetable. Explain that you will be working at certain times and ask them not to disturb you. 40 you can call your friends later.
Set goals for yourself.
Get a good night’s sleep.
Do the most important tasks first.
Also, do not be afraid to say “no”.
You should finish your task on time.
Don’t take phone calls during the time you set aside for work.
Don’t wait until just before a test to try and remember everything.

Thanks to advances in technology, how we make friends and communicate with them has changed 56 (significant). Nowadays, we can move around the world and still stay in touch with the people that we want to remain friends 57 .
Social media tools let us see what our friends are up to and maintain friendships. The digital age also enables us 58 (find)people who share our interests, such as collecting model cars or 59 (play)an unusual instrument. Whatever our 60 (hobby), the Internet can connect us with others who also enjoy doing them, even if they live on the other side of the world.
However, the “friends" online don’t necessarily become our real friends. If people always exchange true 61 (person)information online, then these friendships can be real and meaningful. But we need to keep in mind that what we see on social media 62 (be)often not the whole truth about a person. On social media sites, people tend to post only positive updates 63 make them appear happy and friendly and the smiling photos can hide real problems.
64 this doesn’t mean that we should throw the baby out of the bathwater. Although in recent years technology 65 (change)the way we acquire friends, the meaning of friendship and our longing for friends remain the same.

It was freezing cold at dusk on such a winter day. And the sky was dark. He was walking down an empty street where there were no passers-by, because people must have been at home for warmth. Cory was walking to a crossroad when suddenly he came across a little boy stuck in the middle of the road alone like him.

Why are you alone here Where is your mother ” “I want to find my mama and papa. Please take me home,” the boy replied, bursting into tears. Cory led him away from the crossroad. Then, he asked worriedly, “How did you come here What’s your name ”
“I’m Simon. I was playing with my dog. The dog ran away, and I ran after him for a long distance. But when I wanted to go back home, I lost my way,” cried the boy. Feeling pity for the boy, Cory made up his mind to help the boy. He couldn’t have the little boy staying here alone.
Attempting to look for his home, Cory took the little boy to different neighborhoods. But things didn’t go that smoothly as he had expected. It was getting darker and darker, and Cory thought he had to help Simon find his home. He knocked on every door, but without luck. Worn out and starving, he realized Simon must be very hungry.
