According to a research, more than 130 billion pounds of uneaten food go to waste in Laura’s county each year. That is about 30% of the yearly food supply (供应). It is a sad fact, especially when you consider how many families and homeless people are in hunger.
When Laura saw her school dining hall throw away food that was not eaten at all every day, she came up with an idea. She started a project to help her school dining hall to give away uneaten food to homeless shelters (避难所) in her community. In the past three years, the same protect has spread to other schools and some fast food restaurants throughout the city. The project is called Feed & Find, which has already fed thousands of people in her city.
How does it work Through an app, Feed & Find matches local homeless shelters with school dining halls and restaurants that have uneaten food to provide. When dining halls or restaurants have uneaten food left, they can use the app to share the information about the food. A truck driver working for the project is then sent to pick it up and take it to a shelter.
Pretty cool, right It’s not surprising that people in other cities have got in touch with Laura, to hoping that she could help develop similar projects for their communities.

A new study shows bee’s tiny insect brains may be able to connect symbols to numbers.
Adrian Dyer is a professor in the RMIT University. He said that the research showed brains which are far smaller than humans’ could know numbers. “Studies have shown primates (灵长类动物) and birds have this ability, but this is the first time we’ve seen this in insects.” Dyer says.
There are 86 billion neurons (神经元) in humans’ brains. Bees only have less than a million. If bees can learn something difficult to understand like human-made symbolic language, this will open up exciting new paths for future communication between humans and animals.
Studies have shown that a number of animals have been able to learn symbols of numbers including parrots and monkeys. An African grey parrot called Alex was able to learn numbers and could do simple calculation. Monkeys were taught Arabic numbers and could order them correctly.
Understanding how tiny brains of bees manage information opens paths to technology, which is good for the future design of computing (计算) systems.

The “24 solar terms” (节气) originated and was first used in China. It was created thousands of years ago on the basis of practical needs of agricultural. Ancient Chinese people used it to guide agricultural production, explain special climate signs and even come up with healthy living tips. Last year, the 24 solar terms was added to UNESCO's world cultural heritage list(联合国教科文组织世界文化遗产名录). Now, it has been brought to life thanks to a creative designer from Southwest China's Guizhou Province.
On the eve of this year's Qingming Festival, Shi Changhong released (发布) his version of reproduced and packaged characters for each solar term in the form of “moving art” of gifs. Since their first release on Zcool on March 29, the gifs have won great praise among the general public and quickly flooded the social media with millions of hits during the festival period.
To maximize publicity, Shi released his work in three forms: the video, the animation and pictures. The background sounds add to the brilliance.
“When I watch the short video, I can strongly feel the Chinese-style elements hidden in it. And it is really cool to liven up traditional Chinese culture in such a unique way.” WeChat user Xiao Feifei said.
“It is really a comfort to me to see so many people like my latest work. To be honest, it would really surprise me if the work had not aroused great interest among Chinese people. The 24 solar terms is a deeply rooted concept that covers the essence of Chinese wisdom. However, only a small portion of people know all the names or the correct order of those terms. My intention is to increase Chinese people’s self-awareness to learn more about our traditional fine culture. Actually, the 24 solar terms work is only a part of my whole design program ‘Charm China’, which I started a year ago.” Shi told China Daily.

I was a volunteer for an organisation at the beginning of this year. The organisation is aimed at helping children who suffer from cancer. One day, we were asked to raise money for cancer research and programme funding at an event.
Since my friend Lisa was also a volunteer for the organisation, I went to the event with her. There were many people at the event. After seeing our poster, some people came to us and talked with us. But few people donated money. It was a bit hot that day. Both Lisa and I got really upset.
Half an hour later, Lisa started complaining, “I don’t think we can raise much money today. ”
“Don’t worry. The event lasts for three hours. There is still a lot of time left,” I said, though I also thought poorly of our plan to raise much money that day.
While Lisa and I were talking, a little boy of about eight years old came to us. He stood in front of our poster and started reading.
After a while, he asked, “What is cancer?”
I explained what cancer is. Then I said, “Many people around the world are suffering from cancer. It can be really dangerous. More research is needed to learn about it so that people with it can suffer less. That’s why we’re collecting money for it. ”
“Do children suffer from cancer, too?” asked the boy.
“Yes. Many children suffer from cancer. Some of them may die. They need help. ” Lisa said and I nodded.
Hearing that, the boy became sad. Then the boy asked, “How much money have you collected?”
Both Lisa and I were embarrassed to tell him that we didn’t raise much money. At last, we said, “Not much. ”
The boy looked into our donation container and only saw a few one dollar and five dollar bills. The boy said nothing after seeing that and left. Then some girls came to us and we started talking with them. Neither Lisa nor I thought the boy would return. However, about twenty minutes later, the boy did return.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
The boy happily ran to us and asked, “Would you take a donation from children?”

Studies have shown that a number of animals have been able to learn symbols of numbers, including parrots and monkeys. An African grey parrot called Alex was able to learn numbers and could do simple calculation. Monkeys were taught Arabic numbers and could order them correctly.

【详解】考查表语从句。句意:听起来他已经意识到他的错误了。分析句子可知,sounded用作连系动词,故空处引导表语从句,从句结构、意义完整,应用that引导。故填that。

Yours,
Li Hua
【答案】Dear Freshmen,
I am Li Hua, a student who is going to graduate from our school. At first, I'd like to extend my heartfelt welcome to all of you. Considering that senior high is greatly different from junior high, I'm writing this letter to offer you some suggestions on how to spend your high school fruitfully.
On one hand, you'd better put study first. Apart from spending most of your time on study, you are expected to explore your own learning methods instead of relying too much on your teachers. Meanwhile, keep a good state of mind the moment you come across failure. On the other hand, it is of vital importance to get on well with your teachers and classmates, with whom you can share your happiness and sorrow. In addition, don't forget to exercise regularly to build up your body.
I sincerely hope you have a bright future.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 读后续写

Both Lisa and I were deeply touched.

【答案】The boy happily ran to us and asked, “Would you take a donation from children?” Lisa and I looked at each other. We couldn’t believe such a little boy would care. Though we didn’t believe it, we said “yes”. The boy put his hand in his pocket and took out some five dollar bills. He said, “I just asked for them from my mother. I really want to help the children suffering from cancer. ”
Both Lisa and I were deeply touched. We thanked the boy, but he left soon. Looking at his back, both Lisa and I were greatly encouraged. We wanted to try harder to raise money. So instead of just standing there, we went to people and told them about our programme. At the end of the day, we raised over three thousand dollars, a lot more than Lisa and I had expected in the beginning.
