A year back I received a full scholarship to attend the University of San Francisco. All of my hard work had paid off. My mom had spent a lot of money on my attending a private high school, so I was sure to push myself: I volunteered, joined various clubs, and graduated with honors. I was so excited to start a new chapter of my life. I had totally packed two weeks before it was time to leave.
Soon enough, the big day came, but it wasn’t like what I had thought. The first two weeks were the most difficult days of my entire life. Every night I would cry myself to sleep. I was so homesick and I didn’t know how to deal with my broken heart. To distract myself, I threw myself into my studies and I applied for a ton of jobs. In any remaining free time, I started forcing myself to the gym. I wanted to keep every part of my day busy so I wouldn’t think how lonely I felt.
Soon after, I began to limit food, and then I became worse. Finally, I went to see a doctor. When the doctor weighed me, I was crazy about my weight. So I continued to lower my goal, and convinced myself that controlling my weight was the solution to my homesickness. But when I was told that I had no choice but to spend time on my studies, I quickly started recovery in my mind.
How could I do I told myself that school was what I was best at. I decided to get rid of my homesickness and took exercise actively. My first term of college had passed at last and I had gotten straight A’s. That’s why I want to share my story—to help other students feel less lonely.

Ancient Myth—A Hit with Modern Audiences
This summer’s surprise hit at movie theaters across China was the retelling of the ancient myth of Nezha. The animated film 1 (take) over four billion yuan at the box office and has become one of the country’s most successful films. It proved that China could produce animated films comparable to 2 produced in Hollywood and Japan.
The film, directed by Yang Yu, was a massive undertaking from start to finish. He spent two years 3 (write) the script (剧本)and three more years making the film which required the efforts of 1,600 animators. But for Yang, it was a way to prove to himself that he could change his fate and inspire others to change their fate as well.
“I used to suffer from a lot of prejudice after changing my career,” said Yang. “Since then I have thought about making an animated film to encourage young people to persist in their dreams.”
4 (convey) the message that “your fate is in your own hands” , Yang made some changes to the original myth. Nezha is born to be a devil (恶魔) , 5 (fate) to get into mischief(恶作剧) , but he decides to overcome his fate and save the people of his hometown from being destroyed by Ao Bing, the third son of the Dragon King.
6 the ancient myth being very clear about the differences between the good and the bad guys, in Yang’s film, all of the characters are treated with empathy, and even the “bad” people are also victims of their fate, 7 , actually, have the potential to change and become good.
Over the years, I have come across a few students labeled as “devils”. Although some misbehave simply 8 they are not mature enough, others are making trouble and uncooperative when they are in a bad mood. Those students need to know they are not doomed to be bad. As they grow up, they would have the power to change their circumstances.
If you have seen Nezha, you know 9 a terrific, entertaining film it is. But an important lesson is also conveyed in the film that we should not judge ourselves or others too 10 (harsh) so as not to allow those negative judgments to control our fate.

Ariana caught another whiff (难闻的味道) and tried to hold her breath. She moved away slightly, but Ashley only moved closer and continued talking. Ariana felt trapped. She wanted badly to tell Ashley that she didn’t smell very good. But how could she do that without hurting Ashley’s feelings Instead, she gathered the remains of her lunch to throw in the trash, thankful for the excuse to get some fresh air. She looked back to see Ashley eating quietly. Ashley’s hair was tangled (乱糟糟的) , and her clothes were dirty. Ariana forced herself to go back to the table and take her seat, vowing (发誓) that she would not sit with Ashley tomorrow.
When Ariana got home from school, she complained to her mother, “There’s a girl named Ashley who likes to sit next to me in school, but she smells bad.”
“She’s probably having a tough day,” said her mother.
“No, it’s not just one day. She smells bad a lot,” Ariana explained. “Nobody else likes to sit next to her, either.”
“I don’t think you understand Ashley’s situation, so let me ask you this. . . ” Her mother’s tone was serious. “Who makes sure that your hair is combed every morning so you’ll look nice when you go to school ”
“You do,” answered Ariana.
“Who makes sure you’re bathed and cleaned every day and your clothes are washed and neatly ironed ”
“You and Daddy,” Ariana said again.
“Do you live in a nice home Do you have enough to eat ”
Ariana nodded, beginning to feel guilty. She was starting to understand now. Ashley couldn’t change her situation because she was only seven years old— the same age as Ariana. Grown-ups are supposed to take care of kids.
“Why doesn’t her family take better care of her ” asked Ariana.
“Not all children live in the best situation, ” her mother said. “The best thing you can do for Ashley is treat her with kindness and sympathy.”

I was so excited to start a new chapter of my life. I had totally packed two weeks before it was time to leave.(我很兴奋能开始我人生的新篇章。
I was so homesick and I didn’t know how to deal with my broken heart.
I was so homesick and i didn’t know how to deal with my broken heart.

be fated to do表示“命中注定会做……”,此处去掉be作状语,故填 fated。
