My Favorite Extra-curricular Activity
When talking about my favorite extra-curricular activity, calligraphy pops up in my mind.
Calligraphy, the Chinese treasure, possesses great wisdom from our ancestors, serving as a bridge connecting past and the present. You can never praise its value too much. The reason why I like is that when practicing calligraphy, I’ll feel the peace it brings to my mind, which contributes to my being committed to it. Meanwhile, it doesn’t cost much energy to conduct such great art, for a brush and paper will be enough. All in all, calligraphy is the ideal extra-curricular activity for every to have a try.

Are you sleeping restlessly, forgetting little things, and feeling depressed and
lonely Don’t worry. We’ve all been there. You’re probably just stressed out.
Stress isn’t always a bad thing. It can be handy for a burst of extra energy and
focus, like when you’re playing a competitive sport, or have to speak in public.
But when it’s continuous, the kind of situation most of us face daily, it
actually begins to change your brain. Chronic ( 长 期 的 ) stress, like being
overworked or having arguments at home frequently, can affect brain size, its
structure, and how it functions, right down to the level of your genes.
As levels of cortisol (皮质醇) rise, electric signals in your hippocampus (海
马体), the part of the brain associated with learning, memories, and stress control,
decline. When the hippocampus weakens, so does your ability to control your
stress.
That’s not all, though. Cortisol can literally cause your brain to get smaller in
size. Too much of it results in the shrinking of the part of your brain that regulates
behaviors like concentration, decision-making, judgement, and social interaction.
It also leads to fewer new brain cells being made in the hippocampus. This
means chronic stress might make it harder for you to learn and remember things,
and also set the stage for more serious mental problems, like depression and
eventually Alzheimer’s disease.
It’s not all bad news, though. There are many ways to change what cortisol
does to your stressed brain. The most powerful weapons are exercise and getting
into deep thoughts, which involves breathing deeply and being aware and focused
on your surroundings. Both of these activities decrease your stress and increase
the size of the hippocampus, and therefore your memory improves.

The average cost of an iPhone has climbed up, and even the most affordable
Android devices come with arising price. 16 It is wise to pay close
attention to the best practices for extending the life of your smartphone.
Fortunately, there are several ways to do this.
Remove unnecessary apps and photos.
When the storage and capabilities (能力) of the smartphone are being maxed
out, the phone will become much less responsive. 17 To avoid this
unnecessary expense, make sure that you regularly remove any apps, photos,
documents or text messages that you do not actually need.
18
Put your phone on the charger (充电器) when it reaches a battery life of 75
percent. Waiting until the battery life drops to 25 percent will dramatically reduce
its ability to receive and hold a change. Using up your battery and then charging it
back to 100 percent is a bad idea. Your phone will last a lot longer if you charge it
for a few minutes off and on throughout the day.

AMOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they
were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when
they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken
porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it.
Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the
stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some
rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff
broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and
put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner
to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying

the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna
threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time,
she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake.
The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked.
Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a
mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of
the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain.
Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning.
Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.
