Dan Mancina is a skateboarder whose jaw-dropping videos get hundreds of thousands of views. Mancina also happens to be blind, and videos of him using his white cane (手杖) as he skateboards have gained admiration from fans around the world.
“I’ve lost my vision slowly throughout my life,"Mancina said. It wasn't until his mid-20s that his condition—an eye disease started to affect his day-to-day life, stopping him from driving and biking. The Michigan native started skating at seven, and got into it more seriously at 13, saying the sport helps him express himself. He stopped skating for a couple of years. This period, the 35-year-old said, was his "lowest point".
However, mobility training helped him gain confidence. Slowly, he returned to doing what he loved. Mancina started filming short videos of his progress and posting them online and met a new group of people to skate with, gaining enough confidence to return to the streets."I was just actually trying it, and then realized I was still the same person and that I could still do all the things that I love,"he said.
Now, Mancina wants to create spaces where visually impaired (视力受损的) people can enjoy the sport."I wanted to build the first skatepark designed for visually impaired people, so I started a foundation called 'Keep Pushing' and have been raising money ever since for a few years now,"he said. The park, set to be built in Michigan, will use adaptive methods, such as increasing the size of obstacles, to make it safe and accessible.
"To change the perception of the visually impaired, I started my social media stuff. Some people think it's crazy for a blind people to skate. It's not that crazy in my head. I just enjoy skating. I encourage people to think that way—don't let other people decide what you can and can't do. You know. It's all up to you,"Mancina added.
24.Which of the following best describes Mancina skateboarding
A. Time-consuming B. Breath-taking. C. Labour-saving. D. Stress-reducing.
25.What happened to Mancina before he started skateboarding again
A. His eye disease had been cured.

B. He had a sense of belonging gradually.
C. He was very anxious about his performance.

Activities such as art classes could be recommended as an alternative to medication for patients in England as part of a major initiative to reduce the number of people becoming dependent on prescription drugs.
The Times newspaper quotes figures showing that in the past 12 months, 8.4 million adults in England were taking anti-depressants(抗抑郁药),which is 8 percent higher than 2019, which has resulted in the new advice. Around 23 percent of women are on antidepressants, and 12 percent of men.
“Medicines offer a fantastic range of tools for NHS(National Health Service) staff to provide care that can be positively life-changing,” said Tony Avery, the national clinical director for prescribing at NHS England. “However, we need to be alert to the risks of some medicines, and the framework we are publishing today empowers local services to work with people to ensure they are being effectively supported when a medicine is no longer providing overall benefit.”
The NHS report drew particular attention to projects carried out in the city of Gloucester-shire. One service, called Art on Prescription, was described as “a form of social prescription and is a non-clinical intervention delivered by art practitioners for therapeutic benefit”. Another, a course called Artlift, begins with “a personalized ‘What Matters To You’ conversation prior to the start of the program and (we) agree a personalized support plan and goals with each participant”. They all reported improvement in participants’ psychological well-being.
Actually, as long ago as September 2018, then health secretary Matt Hancock said, “The evidence increasingly shows that activities like social clubs, art, ballroom dancing, and gardening can be more effective than medicines for some people and I want to see an increase in that sort of social prescribing.”
28. Why does activities such as art classes are recommended for patients in England
A. Because they are more effective than medicines.
B. Because people in England prefer to attend art classes.
C. Because they can replace medication for patients in England.
D. Because they may help reduce the people’s dependence on certain drugs.
29. What can we learn from Tony Avery’s words
A. Medicines can provide life-changing effects all the time.
B. We need to be cautious about the dangers of some medicines.
C. The framework published is greatly supported by the local people.
D. Local services can work with patients to provide them with overall benefit.
30. What do you know about the projects carried out in the city of Gloucester-shire
A. The two projects were carried out in the rural areas of Gloucester-shire.
B. Art on Prescription was a clinical intervention delivered by art practitioners.
C. The patients’ mental health in the two projects were both reported to be improved.
D. A personalized “What Matters To You” conversation started after the start of the program Artlift.
31. What’s the purpose of the passage
A. To persuade people to stop taking medicine.
B. To introduce a new kind of life-changing medicine.
C. To appeal to the government to organize more social activities.
D. To recommend a way to reduce patients’ dependence on prescribed drugs.
D
Chinese scientists have discovered a new water reservoir on the moon in the form of glass beads(珠子), which could have major significance for finding out the water content of the earth’s only natural satellite and potentially extracting them to support future lunar missions.
A study published in the journal Nature Geoscience last week revealed soil samples collected by China’s Chang’e-5 lunar probe contained impact glass beads that held water in the form of hydroxyl (羟基),a molecule consisting of one oxygen atom and one hydrogen atom. Hydroxyl ion(离子)is one of the most common ions found in water.
These glass beads are created when meteoroids(流星体)hit the moon’s surface, throwing up hot molten water drops which then cool and turn solid. They function like a sponge, soaking up hydrogen atoms carried by the solar wind to form hydroxyl, thus playing an important role in the water cycle of the lunar surface.
While each bead only holds a tiny amount of water, these glass balls can be seen everywhere on the moon and researchers estimated lunar soils could store as much as 270 billion metric tons of water. For decades, scientists thought the moon was bone dry until discoveries in recent years revealed its soil could hold water. “The moon potentially holding 270 billion metric tons of water is quite substantial, though it pales in comparison to the amount of water in the earth’s oceans,” said Hu Sen, a researcher from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and one of the key scientists behind the study.
These findings not only provide insight on the origins, storage, and transportation of water on celestial bodies without atmospheres, but they also may prove helpful for planning and building a sustainable human habitat on these planets, he added.
However, the specific origins of the water on the lunar surface remain a mystery. The study presented several potential sources, including solar wind implantation, the release of trapped gas when the moon was hot and volcanically active, and delivery by comets and asteroids.
32. What is the use of the glass beads
A. Absorbing water. B. Drying water. C. Creating water. D. Recycling water.
33. What is the main idea of paragraph 4
A. The moon was a dry place for decades.
B. The moon holds as much water as the earth does.
C. Scientists discovered the moon could store water.
D. The amount of water on the moon is comparatively large.
34. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Trapped gas should be released.
B. Further research needs to be done.
C. Water sources have been identified.
D. Solar wind was implanted on the moon.
35. What can be the best title of the text
A. Future Habitat for Humans: the Moon
B. New Discovery: Glass Beads on the Moon
C. New Findings: Water on the Lunar Surface
D. Future Missions: China’s Chang’e Lunar Probes

Even if you’re not a serial procrastinator(拖延者), chances are there are many times you’ve put off a must-do task in favour of doing another, more fun one. ___36___In its more injurious forms, it can keep us from having important conversations with loved ones or delay addressing health issues. Luckily, there are easy and practical steps we can take to tame(驯化) the procrastination beast.
Recognize procrastination
The biggest misconception we have about procrastination is that it’s a time management problem. ___37____But such methods rarely work. That’s because procrastination is all about emotional regulation: we procrastinate because we’re hard-wired to choose feeling good in the moment over feeling good in the long term.
Tim Pychyl, head of the Procrastination Research Group, suggests taking three steps to get your procrastination habits under control. First, learn how to tell the difference between procrastination and purposeful delay. Whereas procrastination is often irrational, purposeful delay tends to be rational. ___38____And lastly, learn to forgive yourself for messing up.
Use your power hours
Give yourself an even better chance of succeeding by setting cues and intentions for yourself, and learning how to maximize your power hours.
___39____Say you’re struggling to establish an exercise routine in the mornings. Try setting your gym clothes out the night before and putting your shoes by the door. Keep forgetting or putting off doing breast self-exams ___40____ Making the most of your power hours, meanwhile, is all about scheduling tasks for the time (or times) of day when you’re at your most productive and motivated. Want to train for a 10K run Assess when you have the most energy to exercise. Need to pull together a family savings plan Figure out when you and your partner have the most brain space for what could be a stressful conversation. 【Reader’s Digest India (June, 2024)】
A. Make a list of the tools and materials you’ll need to do the job.
B. Setting cues and intentions is all about making it as easy as possible to follow through on a task or goal.
C. Second, realize that when you’re procrastinating, you’re acting against your own self-interest.
D. In its more harmless forms, procrastinating can lead us to let our homes get messier than we’d like.
E. Set an intention to do one every time you’re in the shower.
F. If we make more lists or get a time management app, we’ll solve all our problems.
G. Pychyl stresses that conquering your procrastination isn’t just about feeling better in the moment—it’s about having more agency over your life.

The “Hurry up you guys, or you’ll be late for school!” called Mom. We dashed downstairs and had a quick breakfast. I was eating my favorite — very sweet cereal, and Sara was having eggs. When I rose to have my bowl washed, Mom whispered, “You know you need to be cautious today when you’re walking Sara to school. It’s your job to assure me she gets there all right.” Then she cast me a very serious look. I thought to myself, wondering why Mom was making such a big deal out of this. It was Sara’s first day of kindergarten, but I could manage it. It wish Mom wouldn’t treat me like such a baby.
“Goodbye, Mom!” Sara yelled. She ran out the door, and I went behind her.
“Be careful!” my mom yelled.
“I will!” I said back and ran outside. Sara was skipping down the front walkway to the sidewalk.
I grabbed Sara’s hand. “Are you eager and excited for your first day of school ” I asked, trying to sound like a grown-up. Sara smiled and nodded her head yes. Meanwhile, my mom was staring at us through the window. “When will she stop treating me like a little kid ” I thought. “I’ll show you the way.” I said, I felt proud to be the elder sister. We walked past beautiful gardens and big, leafy trees. Suddenly, I heard a growl and saw a dog walking towards us. He was big and fierce looking with long sharp teeth. “GRRR!!!” the dog growled. I didn’t see its owner or anyone who could help us. My hand became sweaty and Sara stopped walking. “I’m scared, Julie,” she said. I didn’t want her to be scared. I wanted to seem brave. “Everything will be okay,” I said.
“GRRR!!!” The dog stepped closer and we could see it was the size of a small horse — with red eyes and sharp teeth.

【小作文】:
One possible version
Dear Jim,
Knowing that you have got so addicted to mobile games that it has affected your academic performance badly, I am concerned about you a lot.
As is the fact, the use of the cellphone has boomed in the last decade and mobile games have occupied most of our spare time. However, it is not supposed to be the core of life. To get rid of it, I strongly recommend that you develop a healthy habit to divert your attention from the mobile games. Travelling, for example, is a nice option in which you can enjoy the beauty of nature as well as improve the relationship with your family.
I do hope my suggestions are of some help and that you can spend your time more meaningfully.

I was trying to make my voice sound calm. Planting my feet resolutely on the ground, I said to Sara: “Don’t be afraid!” while holding her hand tight. The dog edged closer with the menacing “GRRR!”. “Run!” I exclaimed, we sprinting to the kindergarten. Just as the dog was overtaking us, we threw ourselves inside. It was really close! We exchanged a happy smile. Seeing Sara stepping into the classroom, I turned for home, wanting desperately to narrate the thrilling episode to Mom.
I told mom what had happened. There followed no response. Then I saw Mom’s tears. “I am so proud of you! You did what you had promised!” Mom said, holding me in a tight embrace, after which Mom looked into my eyes. She gave me some advice on tackling fierce dogs: “Next time you are cornered by such a dog, pretend to pick up a stone. It will be frightened away.” My mom’s words of praise and advice were deeply engraved in my heart. And I promised to be a better guardian of Sara.

W: Do you need a live-in or one that only comes during the day
M: One that lives in would be perfect. We have a place for her to stay. My job requires me to travel often and I work late as well. My wife is very busy, too.
W: Do you have any request for her age
M: Someone in her forties would be preferable. She is more patient and understanding with much experience in taking care of old people.
W: No problem. I have taken it all down.
M: How about the salary
W: The salary will be higher, at least 3,400 dollars a month. Someone might get 4,300 dollars a month. But they don’t get more than 5,000 dollars unless they have some medical skills.
M: That sounds reasonable. When do I see her

【答案】18. B 19. A 20. B
【原文】W: My senior year of college seemed a perfect time to run my first marathon. At the age of twenty-one, I had already completed a few half-marathons. I had the blind optimism of youth. When I told my dad, a lifelong runner, of my plan, he replied that marathons aren’t for me. What a shame! I said to myself as I began training in July. I began to doubt myself only when I felt extremely tired during a particularly hilly twenty-two-mile training run in the hot weather. The marathon took place on a perfect November day. Though I started out promisingly and confidently, I couldn’t keep up with my running partners. Close to the twenty-mile mark I felt a sharp pain in my knee. My friend joined me for the last part, to offer encouragement.
I finished with a time just over five hours. At the finish line I walked slowly toward my father and fell into his hug, no longer offended by his statement. From then on, I realized that marathons are not for everyone.
