Clay Figurine Zhang (Ni Ren Zhang is famous folk art in north China's Tianjin and has a history of nearly 200 years. It is a kind of painted figurine(小塑像)made of clay.
The figurines are loved both at home and abroad. But making one is difficult and requires a high level of skill. It sometimes takes months to complete a fine figurine. And because it places much stress on the use of materials, the figurines can still be lifelike after a long time.
Clay Figurine Zhang was created by Zhang Mingshan in the late Qing Dynasty. Zhang grew up in Tianjin. He started to learn how to make clay figurines from his father when he was a child and soon developed a great interest in it. He watched people who worked on different jobs in the society and put what he saw into his clay figurines. He also added western skills to this traditional art. He became famous with these wonderful clay figurines.
Now, this great folk art has been passed down to Zhang Yu, the sixth generation (代)clay figurine maker in this family. Zhang Yu works very hard to develop his skills and carry the art forward. And to introduce this art to the young, he also teaches in some universities.
"New generations should be allowed to learn the traditional Chinese culture they are interested in and improve the cultures with their own ideas, "Zhang Yu said.

Eric, a foreign university student in China, often posts (网上发布) videos about his experiences of Chinese culture on his vlog (视频博客).
In one video, for example, Eric showed how he learned the Chinese word dongxi. He translated it word by word into “east west”. He learned that people in ancient cities built market places all along the road from east to west. And dongxi could also mean “things”. So “qu mai dongxi” means “I’m going to buy things.”
Some other videos show him reading Chinese poems and performing kung fu in traditional Chinese clothes. These are quite welcome among his 40, 000 followers.
“Many of my followers are learning Chinese,” Eric said. “But sadly, they know little about Chinese culture and the country.” Like many foreigners, Eric once believed that all Chinese could perform kung fu, like flying onto roofs and walking over walls. He thought the country was not that modern. But after studying in China for one year since 2019, he changed his mind. “China has entered a new age, but in many people’s eyes, people in China still live the same life as they did in the 1970s.” Eric said, “That is why I started to make vlogs to introduce Chinese culture.”
But making them was not easy. Take the poem Second Farewell to Cambridge by Xu Zhimo as an example. “I can understand and read every word in the poem,” Eric said. “But the challenging part is to show my feelings while reading.” So, he looked for more background information and made his feelings right for each part of the poem.
Making these vlogs takes lots of time, but the young man feels happy that his vlogs have encouraged many people. He wants to continue bridging the differences between two cultures. “It’s not easy,” Eric smiles, “but I will try my best to do my part and help achieve this goal.”

China covers large areas and has a great population. Different living habits are always an interesting topic(话题)in the country. Recently, another difference between southern Chinese and northern Chinese became a hot one: the way people shop at markets.
People from southern China say that they always buy what they need for just one or two meals. It is normal for them to buy half of a Chinese cabbage, two potatoes and 0.25 kilogram of beef at a time.
However, one may be laughed at if he does this in the north. Instead, buying vegetables and meat enough for a week is usual. Also, you can buy a small amount(数量)of fruit, such as a single apple or pear, each time in the south. Shop owners even help you peel and cut them. But shop owners in the north hardly offer such service. And they sell many fruits in baskets and boxes.
The difference could be due to the different weather. Food can be kept for a long time in the north, as it is usually cold and dry there. Many northern Chinese have the habit of storing food, especially for the long winter. But the hot and wet weather in the south makes southern Chinese buy just enough food for one meal or one day, or else the food may go bad.
10.From Paragraph 1, we can learn that Chinese people ________.
A.speak in different ways B.compete in different areas
C.shop at different markets D.have different living habits

12.When you buy a pear in southern China, ________.

C.people around you may laugh at you
D.you must offer the shop owner some help
13.The underlined phrase “due to” most probably has the similar meaning with “________”.
A.able to B.good for C.instead of D.because of
14.What is the best title for the text

The Grand Canal is the mother river of Yangzhou. Simultaneous (同时) with her, Yangzhou city was built, developed, achieved prosperity (繁荣), and even went into less importance with her downfall. Pi Rixiu, a poet of the Tang Dynasty, once made the following comment on Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty who had the Grand Canal built: “Everyone complains that the Sui Dynasty ended because of the canal; however, it is still an important way for people to travel. If he hadn’t had so many palaces and dragon boats built, his merits could have been compared with Dayu.” The poet not only criticized the emperor’s dissolute behavior, but also fully recognized his achievements. Nowadays, the Grand Canal still shoulders the responsibilities of transporting coal from the North to the South, transporting grain from the South to the North, and delivering water from the South to the North.
The ancient Guazhou Ferry is located where the ancient canal and the Yangtze River meet. The following is a famous ancient poem eulogizing the Guazhou Ferry. Moonlight on the Spring River by Zhang Ruoxu, a Yangzhou citizen in the Tang Dynasty, described the beautiful scenery of Guazhou of the dim moonlight with gently flowing river.
In spring the river rises as high as the sea,
And with the river’s tide uprises the moon bright,
She follows the rolling waves for ten thousand li,
Where’er the river flows, there overflows her light. (Zhang Ruoxu)
