When I was 13,I climbed my first mountain—a fairly gentle 3,900-foot peak near where I live.I was overweight at the time and out of breath when I reached the summit.But I loved the challenge of conquering something bigger than myself.Soon I’d climbed nearly 100 peaks.My parents were happy I’d finally found a hobby.
I often go climbing with my friend Mel Olsen.Two years ago,on December 30,when I was 16,she and I drove to Oregon to tackle 11,240-foot Mount Hood.We started at 3 a.m.,following the paths alongside the ski runs.Along the way,we met two other climbers and the four of us continued on together.
After about five hours,we reached a plateau(高原) at about 10,000 feet,just before the final push to the top.By this point,the wind conditions were nasty.My exposed skin felt as though it were burning.The other climbers decided to turn back,but Mel and I went ahead.
The trail(路径) we followed grew narrower and steeper.At around 9 a.m.,we reached a patch of ice called an ice step.I volunteered to go first.I placed my left foot on the ice step.Confident I was safe,I put my full weight on it.Suddenly,I heard a crack,and the whole ice broke off the step,right under my foot.
In an instant,I fell backward,rolling down the mountain.I stuck out my arms and legs,grabbing at anything.That stopped my somersaulting(翻滚) down the mountain,but I was still sliding.After a few seconds,I came to a stop.I’d fallen 600 feet.
I took a survey of my body to see where I was hurt,starting with my head,then my neck and arms.For the most part,I was fine,except that I was suffering from a sharp,agonizing(痛苦难忍的) pain in my left leg.

That December night,Gus Kiebel,a county wildlife officer,was driving home from work when he spotted the pair in the flash of his headlights.It was snowing so hard that it was difficult to see,but he could tell the dogs were wearing collars and tags(标签).What were they doing out here on this stretch of road He parked his truck and approached the animals.
Gus stretched out his hands to the beagles,which made no effort to escape.He placed the dogs in his truck,on the floor of the passenger side.By the time he came around to the driver’s side,he found that they had climbed onto the passenger seat and were snuggled(偎依) together there.Gus snapped a picture of the pair and sent it to his wife,Katie Kiebel.
Then he dialed the number from the dogs’ tags.A man answered and immediately grew defensive when Gus told him why he was calling.“I gave those dogs away,” the man said.“They’re not mine anymore.” The man hung up.
These beagles—who looked ragged and uncared for—were abandoned,then.No home at all in this world.Gus looked over at them,and then he called Katie.

Passage 1
As Mel and other climbers made their way down,I yelled for help.They immediately came to assist me and called the Mountain Rescue.Mel stayed by my side while I tried not to cry from the pain.I’d been lying on the ice shivering for four hours by the time the rescuers reached me.They strapped me into a sled and pulled me down the mountain.I have a pretty high pain tolerance,but I screamed with each bounce.At the bottom of Mount Hood,I was loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital.
The doctors told me it would be a year before I could climb again,but I was back on the trails within six months.The fall has made me more cautious.One slip on a mountain can change everything.But the experience also made me grow as a person.There was a lot of media attention following the accident.Strangers commented on the videos,saying I’d put others in danger.I think handling all that at such a young age helped me mature.Since the accident,I’ve climbed another 60 mountains.I’m not going to let one fall keep me from doing my favorite thing in the world.
Passage 2
“You cannot put them back in the snow,” she said.“Bring them home.”The Kiebels prepared a bed for the dogs on their warm enclosed porch,and laid out food and water.The exhausted animals lay together,Cooper,the male,periodically lifting his head to fuss over Pepper.Although Gus had dreamed of owning beagles as a boy and keeping this pair was out of the question,the Kiebels already had a dog.But he knew someone at a no-kill shelter,the League for Animal Welfare.
The next day,Katie took the dogs to the shelter to drop them off.“I’m not signing the dogs over to you if you’re going to separate them,” she said.The shelter workers promised her they’d keep the couple together.In the days following,Katie phoned the shelter repeatedly to check up on Pepper and Cooper.Soon after Christmas,the beagles were adopted—as a pair,to a loving family.The news came as a great relief to Katie and Gus.The kindhearted couple gave shelter to an abandoned dog couple,which speaks to the best of our nature.When kindness and love get the better of cruelty and neglect,it can feel like the greatest miracle of all.
