Tisha was the silent one in the family. She spoke very little and kept to herself. In school she had no friends, which made her parents wonder when she would make friends, laugh and be like other children. When Tisha was seven, her cousin Shalini from the United States visited her.
“Say hi to your cousin, Tisha,” her mother told her. Tisha mumbled (咕哝) a hello and went off. On her very first day, Shalini visited the neighbours’ houses, and made friends with everyone. When Tisha returned home in the evening, she saw that Shalini had become an appealing girl in the family and in the neighbourhood. Tisha felt a little lost. Her mother didn’t know it and told her that Shalini would sleep with her that night.
To avoid talking to Shalini, Tisha got into bed early and pretended to be fast asleep. But the moment Shalini came in, Tisha started to make changes. “See, what I have got for you, Tisha. I wanted it to be a big surprise,” said Shalini, who handed Tisha a box. Carefully, Tisha opened the box. It was a huge multi-coloured globe (地球仪). And it seemed to Tisha that Shalini and she were traveling around the world on the globe. The blue of the oceans was so real that Tisha expected to see her favourite dolphins, polar bears and green forests.
“How did you know that I wanted to be an explorer when I grew up ” Tisha asked, Shalini replied, “Actually, I didn’t know. When I was five, my parents gave me the globe. We would play a game by using it every day. And as I grew up, I came to realize that this globe not only showed countries, oceans, forests and deserts but also showed places affected by polluted areas, damaged forests and dirty sea. So I hoped to go around the world to expose its beauty and the damages humans had done to it.
Tisha felt delighted and that night she went to sleep holding the globe and had a good dream. The next morning the entire family was shocked to see a cheerful Tisha.

Forget drinking countless glasses of water or getting your beauty sleep. The secret of looking young is simply to stay out of sun.
A study of hundreds of women has revealed that those who avoided the sun’s rays looked up to 20 years younger than they actually are. However, other supposed rules for a youthful complexion (肤色), from drinking lots of water to sleeping well and exercising regularly, failed to hold back the hands of time.
Only keeping out of the sun, and wearing sunscreen when this wasn’t possible, made a difference, the American Academy of Dermatology’s annual conference will hear today.
The finding comes from a study of 231 women of all ages who were quizzed about (调查) their lives, including whether they were sun-loves. When researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital in the US guessed how old the women were, they found those who took care in the sun tended to have aged more slowly.
Researcher Dr. Alexa Kimball said the popular belief that we drink lots of water to stay healthy is false and previous research by the British Nutrition Foundation reached a similar conclusion.
It isn’t clear why the women who slept well didn’t have younger-looking skin. But it may be that the question they were asked was too narrow and didn’t consider their long-term sleep patterns.
46. Which way can help women stay younger according to the study
A. Drinking plenty of water. B. Having a good sleep.
C. Taking exercise regularly. D. Keeping out of the sun.
47 How did the researcher get the finding
A. By interviewing 231 women face to face.
B. By comparing the new research with the previous ones.
C. From the results of some quizzes.
D. Through the result of different games.
48. Why does sleeping well fail to make people look young
A. Because most people don’t sleep long enough.
B. Because most people have wrong sleep patterns.
C. Because most people lack of sleep.
D. It’s unknown yet now.
49. What is the main idea of the passage
A. To introduce a good way to make women look younger.
B. To explain how scientists carried out the research.
C. To prove people’s previous ideas are true.
D. To persuade women to change their long-term sleep patterns.
50. The passage is most probably taken from ______.
A. a school textbook B. a reference book
C. a science fiction D. a science paper

In the workplace, at home, in all areas of life, looking for a reason to laugh is necessary. A sense of humor helps us to get through the dull times, enjoy the good times.
Six-year-old Hannah encountered one of the most frightening times of her life when she discovered she had cancer. And if she were to give life a chance Hannah would have to put up with painful, almost endless medical treatments. At one point she lost all her hair. On days when she felt strong enough to get out, she often covered her head.
One day while shopping with her mother, Hannah donned a ball ca p with a small ponytail (马尾辫). Unless one looked closely, she looked as if she had a full head of hair. Before long Hannah noticed a small boy staring at her as if he were trying to figure out what was slightly off about the girl. She tried to ignore him, but he followed her around the store. Finally, she took off her ca p showing her shiny, hairless, head. In a firm voice she warned, “This is what happens when you don’t eat your vegetables!”
I don’t know what became of the boy. As for Hannah, her sense of humor helped get her through one of life’s hard times.

“Say hi to your cousin, Tisha,” her mother told her. Tisha mumbled (咕哝) a hello and went off. On her very first day, Shalini visited the neighbours’ houses, and made friends with everyone.
47. How did the researcher get the finding
C To prove people’s previous ideas are true.
D. To persuade women to change their long-term sleep patterns.
50. The passage is most probably taken from ______.

As entertainer Bob Hope once said, “I’ve seen what a good laugh can do. It can transform tears into hope.” And sometimes, a little more hope is all we need.

考查细节理解。根据第二段中“And if she were to give life a chance Hannah would have to put up with painful, almost endless medical treatments.”(如果她要给生命一个机会,汉娜将不得不忍受痛苦,几乎无休止的药物治疗。)可知,如果汉娜得了癌症,她不得不忍受痛苦和没完没了的医疗治疗。故答案为She suffered painful and endless medical treatments.
【52题详解】
考查细节理解。根据第二段中“At one point she lost all her hair. On days when she felt strong enough to get out, she often covered her head.”(她一度掉光了头发。在她觉得有力气出门的日子里,她经常用手捂着头。)可知,汉娜出门的时候要捂着头是因为她没有了头发。故答案为Because she had no hair.
【53题详解】
考查词义猜测。根据划线单词句中“a ball ca p with a small ponytail (马尾辫).”(一顶扎着小马尾辫的球帽。)以及下文“Unless one looked closely, she looked as if she had a full head of hair.”(除非你仔细看,否则她看起来就像一头浓密的头发。)由此可知,此处为汉娜戴上了一顶扎着小马尾辫的球帽。故可猜测划线单词donned为“戴”的意思,和wore“戴”同义。故答案为wore。
【54题详解】
