When I win at my favourite games, my opponents tend to say: ‘OH, you’re so competitive!’ But when I lose, they smile good-naturedly and say: ‘Bad luck! Good game!’
This suggests that accurate sporting expressions should go something like this:
I am sporty.
You are competitive.
They can’t bear to lose.
Or:
I gave it a go
You did your best.
He tried desperately hard.
I’m not saying I don’t have a competitive personality. We all do. On walks, I like to be out in front. In traffic jams, I find myself focusing on cars in other lanes, and fret if they edge ahead of me. I tense up while waiting for trains, determined to be first aboard. The other day, I was one of the first to board a train, grabbing a perfect spot in first class. Yes, I had won! Just halfway, I went to get a free drink for a first-class seat from the buffet. But I had left my ticket on my table. I worked out that, if I moved very swiftly, I could nip (快走) through two carriages, and nip back without anyone taking my place at the front of the queue.
So I rushed back, picking up my ticket, and turned back. I was at the beginning of the second carriage, when, to my horror, I noticed, another figure, roughly my size, shooting towards the buffet from the other direction.
Desperate to arrive before he did, I started walking faster. But at exactly the same moment, he started walking faster, too. Trying to retain my dignity, I broke into a running. Whatever happened, I was determined to win! But, annoyingly, at the same time as I sped up, so did he. The race was on.
Finally, in my rush, I knocked into a suitcase and stumbled slightly. Still with my eyes on my challenger, I noticed that-strange but true-exactly the same thing had happened to him.
It was only as we both lifted ourselves up in exactly the same way that I realised that, throughout the race, I had been looking at a reflection of myself in the sliding door!
My competitor for first place in the buffet queue was...me.
4. Which sporting expression can replace “Bad luck! Good game!” in paragraph 1
A. I gave it a go. B. You did your best.
C. You are competitive. D. He tried desperately hard.
5. What does the underlined word “fret” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Get anxious. B. Become relaxed. C. Feel disappointed. D. Remain excited.
6. What can we learn about the author
A. He never fails to beat anyone in his life.
B. He has a gift for games and competitions.
C. He is sporty but often aggressive to others.
D. He is highly competitive and desperate to win.
7 Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A. Sad competitor I can surely beat myself
B. Bad loser No, but I can be a first-class fool
C. Competitiveness works Not in my case
D. More haste It will only result in less speed
C
The Blue Eye of the Sahara is a geological formation in the Sahara Desert that resembles an enormous bullseye. The formation stretches across a 40-kilometer-wide region of the desert in the nation of Mauritania.
For centuries, only a few local tribes knew about the formation. It was first photographed in the 1960s by astronauts who used it as a landmark to track the progress of their landing. Later, the Landsat satellite took additional images and provided information about the size, height, and extent of the formation.
Geologists originally believed that Eye of the Sahara was created when an object from outer space crashed into the surface. However, lengthy studies of the rocks inside the structure show that its origins are entirely Earth-based, as the formation contains rocks that are at least 100 million years old; some date back to well before the appearance of life on Earth.
Millions of years ago, volcanic activity from deep beneath Earth’s surface lifted the entire landscape around the Eye. After the volcanism died down, wind and water erosion( 侵蚀) began to eat away at the layers of rock. After years of erosion, the region began to settle down and fall in on itself, creating the roughly circular “eye” feature.
The Eye of the Sahara attracts both tourists and geologists to study the unique geological feature in person. However, because the Eye is located in a remote region of the desert with very little water or rainfall, it is not under much threat from humans.
That leaves the Eye at the mercy of nature. The ongoing effects of erosion threaten the landscape, just as they do other places on the planet. Desert winds may well bring more dunes(沙丘) to the region, particularly as climate change causes increased desertification in the area. It’s quite possible that, in the distant future, the Eye of the Sahara will be buried under sand and dust. Future travelers may find only a windswept desert burying one of the most striking geological features on the planet.
8. What do we know about the Blue Eye of the Sahara
A. It has been known for centuries.
B. It was created by objects from outer space.
C. It was useful to astronauts in the 1960s.
D. It was first photographed by a satellite.
9. Which factor directly contributes to its circular “eye” feature
A. Volcanic activity. B. Climate change.
C. Wind and water erosion. D. Desertification.
10. Which best describe the future of the Eye of the Sahara according to the text
A. Desirable. B. Secure. C. Uncertain. D. Worrying.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. What is the Eye of the Sahara
B. Why is the Eye of the Sahara in Danger
C. Why Is the Eye of the Sahara Popular
D. How Can We Save the Eye of the Sahara
D
Drone delivery technology is making huge progress this year as delivery company Zipline announces its latest device that it has been working on since 2014.
The device, known as the Platform 2 (P2) system, could cut delivery times in half and potentially be a new life-saving asset for delivering medical supplies, prescriptions and food.
The build of the P2 Zip consists of a droid (机器人), which is essentially a streamlined box with a hidden propeller (螺旋桨) at the rear. A person sending out a delivery will put the package within the droid, which will then be placed inside the belly of one of Zipline’s P2 Zip drones.
Once the P2 Zip takes off, it flies at a height of approximately 300 feet in the air. The drone can carry up to eight pounds at a time and can travel as far as an out-and-back service distance of 10 miles. Once the drone reaches its destination, a second droid is lowered and uses sensor cameras to detect where to land the package. The recipient of the package can then open the droid to retrieve the package, and the droid is then lifted back up into the drone to continue on its journey back to either charge itself or retrieve another order.
One of the best benefits of this new invention is that it will make delivering packages locally a lot quicker. The drone cannot make long journeys; however, it can certainly make it from your local grocery store to your house and back without an issue.
This could also be a potentially life-saving invention as the company will be cooperating with hospitals and other health care facilities Michigan Medicine and Salt Lake City’s Intermountain Health already plan on using it to deliver prescriptions. It will also be used by some companies to deliver blood and vaccines to remote areas. At the same time, companies like Sweetgreen have also signed on to use the service to deliver food to customers’ homes.
Zipline hopes to have the P2 Zip working and in service in just about a year. The only downside I can imagine is that many other tech companies are working fast to make drone delivery happen and we may have an issue of drone traffic in the sky before we know it. Until then, we’ll have to see what plans these companies have to limit that issue.
12. What is the P2 Zip according to the text
A. A delivery company. B. A streamlined box.
C. A delivery device. D. An operational system.
13. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The working process of the device. B. The advantages of the device.
C. The significance of the device. D. The design of the device.
14. Which of the following can be inferred about the new invention
A. It makes it easy to deliver packages across the country.
B. It has been used to deliver prescriptions by hospitals.
C. It is originally designed to save people’s lives.
D. It will still be some time before it comes into use.
15. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the invention
A. Worried. B. Hopeful. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.

“Jobie Nymble from Riverside Middle School takes first place in the girl's 100-meter hurdles!”
“County championships, here we come,” screamed Jobie, patting her worn neon-green track shoes. They were bursting at the seams, but she didn't care. They were her lucky shoes and she loved them. “Next Saturday, we're taking home the gold,” Jobie whispered to her lucky track shoes, excitedly retying them. Pop! She sighed as she stared at the broken-off piece of shoelaces dangling between her fingers.
“Don't forget guys,” chirped Marisol, one of her teammates. “My birthday party is next Friday at Hidden Park.”
“Beep. Party recorded in calendar,” joked Jobie in her best robot voice.
Next weekend couldn't come soon enough. Jobie was excited all week long. At track practice, she leaped over those hurdles faster than she'd ever leaped before.
The day of Marisol's party, Jobie put on her favorite outfit and her lucky track shoes. "Perfect." She smiled at herself in the mirror.
The party was in full swing when Jobie arrived. She saw two of her teammates rushing toward her, breathless and barefoot. “Come on,” they said excitedly, “You have to try the slide”. “Slide What sli…” Suddenly, she saw it. The BIGGEST inflatable slide she had ever seen was on the far side of the park. Without thinking twice, Jobie threw aside her shoes and run toward the slide. Its ladder stretched to the sky but she reached the top in no time. She slid down, and closed her eyes as she let go. “Woo-hoo!”
Jobie couldn't get enough. When it was finally time to go home, she reluctantly made her way back to the track where she'd left her shoes. As she eyed the area from a distance, panic set in.

Or:
I gave it a go.

【4题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“When I win at my favourite games, my opponents tend to say: ‘OH, you’re so competitive!’ But when I lose, they smile good-naturedly and say: ‘Bad luck! Good game!’(当我在最喜欢的比赛中获胜时,我的对手往往会说:‘哦,你太好胜了!’但当我输了的时候,他们和蔼地微笑着说:‘运气不好!玩得好!”)”可知,对手的意思是“你玩的不错,但是运气较差,所以输了”。“Good game!”可以被“You did your best.(你尽力了)”替换。故选 B 。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“On walks, I like to be out in front.(散步时,我喜欢走在前面)”以及“I tense up while waiting for trains, determined to be first aboard.(等火车时我紧张起来,决心第一个上车)”可推知,作者一直很好胜,在看到其他车往前走时,自己会比较着急。由此推知,划线词fret和A 选项Get anxious(变得焦虑)意思相近。故选A项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“I’m not saying I don’t have a competitive personality. We all do. On walks, I like to be out in front. In traffic jams, I find myself focusing on cars in other lanes, and fret if they edge ahead of me. I tense up while waiting for trains, determined to be first aboard. (我不是说我没有好胜的性格。我们都有。散步时,我喜欢走在前面。在交通堵塞的时候,我发现自己会把注意力集中在其他车道的汽车上,如果它们挤到我前面,我就会烦恼。等火车时我紧张起来,决心第一个上车)”以及第五段“Whatever happened, I was determined to win! But, annoyingly, at the same time as I sped up, so did he. The race was on.(无论发生什么,我都决心要赢!但是,烦人的是,在我加快速度的同时,他也加快了速度。比赛开始了)”可推知,作者好胜心很强,急于求胜。故选D项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。从全文概括以及最后一段“My competitor for first place in the buffet queue was…me.(我在自助餐队伍中争夺第一名的对手是……我)”可知,本文是讲述一次自己为了获得免费饮料而误以为车厢反射的自己的影子是竞争对手的一次荒诞的经历。由此可知,B项“Bad loser No, but I can be a first-class fool(输不起的人吗?不,但我可以做一个一流的傻瓜)”是本文最好的标题。故选B。
【答案】8. C 9. C 10. D 11. A

【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Millions of years ago, volcanic activity from deep beneath Earth’s surface lifted the entire landscape around the Eye. After the volcanism died down, wind and water erosion began to eat away at the layers of rock. After years of erosion, the region began to settle down and fall in on itself, creating the roughly circular “eye” feature.(数百万年前,地球表面深处的火山活动抬升了地球之眼周围的整个景观。火山活动平息后,风和水的侵蚀开始侵蚀岩层。经过多年的侵蚀,该区域开始沉降并向内塌陷,形成了大致圆形的“眼睛”特征)”可知,是因为多年的风蚀和水蚀导致了它的圆形“眼睛”特征。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The ongoing effects of erosion threaten the landscape, just as they do other places on the planet. Desert winds may well bring more dunes to the region, particularly as climate change causes increased desertification in the area. It’s quite possible that, in the distant future, the Eye of the Sahara will be buried under sand and dust.(侵蚀的持续影响威胁着景观,就像它们在地球上的其他地方一样。沙漠风很可能会给该地区带来更多的沙丘,特别是在气候变化导致该地区荒漠化加剧的情况下。很有可能在遥远的将来,撒哈拉蓝眼将被埋在沙尘之下)”可知,很有可能在遥远的将来,撒哈拉蓝眼将被埋在沙尘之下,所以撒哈拉蓝眼的未来是让人担忧的。故选D项。
【11题详解】

The only downside I can imagine is that many other tech companies are working fast to make drone delivery happen, and we may have an issue of drone traffic in the sky before we know it.

“Number 7, Jobie Nymble, takes the lead,” cried the announcer. “Just one more hurdle and…”Cheers erupted.
“Don't forget, guys,” chirped Marisol, one of her teammates.

【答案】Para 1:
She picked up her pace. When she reached the place she'd left them, her heart stopped. “They're gone!” she screamed. “My lucky shoes are gone!” Her heart pounding wildly and tears circling in her eyes, she checked the place again but there was still no trace of her shoes. Her teammates also helped her search the park but with no luck. Finally, Jobie had no choice but to wear another pair of new shoes for the competition next day. Without the company of her lucky shoes, Jobie didn't know whether she could make it.
Para 2:
The next day, all the teams gathered for the championships. Jobie felt uncomfortable in her brand-new shoes. “Next up is the girls' 100-meter hurdles,” said the announcer. “Go, Jobie!” Her teammates patted her back as she slowly walked down to the starting e on, try your best! She said to herself. She was so focused that she felt unbelievable when her teammates told her that she had won the gold medal. Only then did she realize that it was not the lucky shoes but her own effort that brought her championship.
