(A)
Last year, I went to a summer camp in the United States with my classmates. It was my first time to go abroad. I lived with a host family in Los Angeles for five days. My host family was friendly and gave me lots of advice. I also took some classes. They were different from the classes I’ve had back home. During my visit, I also went to some famous universities. We learnt about the history behind the universities.
(B)
My name is Brad Li. I stayed with a host family in a small town in America. My host parents were very kind. They organized many activities for me in my free time so that I wouldn’t miss home or feel lonely. However, life in the US was difficult to get used to. My main problem was the language. I failed to understand much in the first few weeks because everyone spoke so fast. Another one was the food. My host family always had bread, potatoes and salad for meals. I really missed the dumplings, rice and delicious dishes from home.

完形填空
An old saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” I didn’t really learn the meaning of this until I studied in Russia.
One day I 1 some of my Chinese friends to a famous local restaurant in Moscow. My guests and I were excited from visiting Red Square and happy about our meeting. We chatted 2 until the waiter told me that we were talking too loud. We turned our voices lower. But this didn’t last long. The waiter came over to us two more times with the same 3 .
How bad an impression we must have left on the local people! In China, it’s natural and 4 for a host to make a lovely atmosphere(气氛). However, in Russia and Western countries, having a meal in a public place means you must 5 your voice low. You need to be polite to others.
I felt 6 about this. Even though we tried our best, it’s very difficult to develop a new habit. Russians have their own 7 habits. My Russian friends, Andrey always looks around and thinks for a while before leaving home. I asked him why he did this. “Aha,” Andrey said, “In Russia, people always spend about a minute 8 things and plans in their minds before leaving. So they won’t 9 anything necessary behind.”
Finding the differences between 10 is very interesting. I’d like to keep my eyes and mind open.

Natsiraishe Maritsa lives in Zimbabwe. She is 17 years old. She is fighting to keep other young girls from becoming brides(新娘). She is doing so by teaching martial arts(武术).
In Zimbabwe, some girls as young as 10 are forced to marry much older men. The practice is more common among the poor and some traditional groups. It is not legal to marry before the age of 18 in Zimbabwe. But the practice is still common. Experts believe 30% of girls in Zimbabwe marry before turning 18. The problem has become worse with COVID-19. The situation for poor families is desperate. Some parents marry off their young daughters to have one less mouth to feed.
Maritsa teaches taekwondo(跆拳道). Maritsa has loved toekwondo since she was 5 years old. She holds lessons in the dirt yard outside her parents’ home. Children as young as 4 attend. So do some of Maritsa’s former schoolmates. “Not many people do taekwondo here,” she said. “So it’s attractive for the girls, both married and single. I use it to get their attention.”
After class, she and some of the married students warn the others against early marriage. “We are not ready for this thing called marriage,” Maritsa said. “We are just too young for it.” Maritsa uses her class as a safe space for girls to share. She also works to build their confidence. “From being hopeless, the young mothers feel empowered,” she said. “They are able to use their stories to warn other girls against falling into the same trap.”
Maritsa began her project in 2018, after seeing her friends leave school for marriage.
“The only support I get is from my parents,” she said. “My father is a farmer. My mother is a full-time housewife.” Still, they do what they can. The virus put classes on hold. But she hopes they will start again soon.

In Western society, especially in the English-speaking world, the chance for young people to see the other countries and experience life is considered important. Many young people, when they finish school at the age of 18, take a gap year before they go to university.
Parents often want their children to grow up a little and see what the real world is like when they finish school. Although they are worried about their safety, many think that the advantages of independence and experience are worth the worries. Children are encouraged to be brave, independent and to explore the world on their own or with friends.
Young people also want to experience freedom and see what life is like on the other side. This other side could be the other side of the world or just the other side of life. For example, if they have a rich life, they may want to see how people in poor areas live.
A gap year after school is also an important chance for young people to spend time thinking about what they want to do with their lives. A little bit of growing up and experience will help them make their important career decisions, especially when they are unsure about what they want to study.
Another reason for going straight after school is to get a break from studying before they start the next few years of university. So anywhere you travel in the world, you will meet young European people exploring the world.
So much of the world has been travelled and explored. The young people are now looking for more worthy experiences. Some of them work as volunteers to do something for the country they are visiting. Many gap year volunteers are now spending a few months teaching English in Thailand, helping feed giant pandas in China or building a well in a village in Africa.
These young people’s wish to explore the world is an expression of the values of the societies that they are part of. Both discovering the world and making a positive difference to it are important parts of the Western mind.
( )1.Which is NOT a reason for young people to take a gap year

A.stay with their parents all the time B.help change the world for the better
C.make money for their further study D.change the Western mind completely
( )4.The purpose of writing this passage is to __________.
discover new ways to take a gap year

A flying car has turned science fiction(科幻小说) into reality after successfully completing a test flight between two airports in Slovakia.
The AriCar, built over two years at a cost of around £1.7 million, was invented by Prfessor Stefan Klein. Powered by an engine from carmaker BMW, it uses regular petrol-pump fuel and can turn from a car into a plane in just two minutes and 15 seconds. Klein has wanted to build a flying car ever since he was little and watched a French film that featured a car turning into a rocket-powered plane.
Once it has taken off, the AirCar can fly at speeds of around 120 miles per hour across distances of up to 600 miles. There is room for two people inside the car, which can carry a maximum(最大的) weight of 200 kilograms and can fly at heights of up to 2,500 metres. Upon landing, the wings fold up and into the car, making it short and narrow enough to drive on ordinary roads. So far, Klein says the car has spent 40 hours in the air, including its first flight between cities, from Nitra to Bratislava in Slovakia, on 28 June.
Klein flew the car himself on the 35-minute flight, and reported that the experience was “normal”. After landing in Bratislava, he drove off the airport runway and onto a motorway. He says that the AirCar is a new type of transport(交通工具) and gives the driver a feeling of freedom that the first cars did 100 years ago.
Some people hope that flying cars will be a big part of every day life one day. Michael Cole, who is the boss of carmaker Hyundai in Europe, predicts that they will be widely used by 2030. He says this could make roads in cities less busy and reduce harmful street-level pollution caused by cars crowding the roads. Last year, Hyundai showed off a full-scale(全尺寸的) model of its own flying car design, developed in partnership with the taxi firm Uber.
( )1.What can we learn about the AirCar
A.It can seat 4 passengers. B.It can fly up to 40 hours.
C.It can change into a plane. D.It is powered by green energy.

A.Worried. B.Bored. C.Surprised. D.Pleasant.
