When you want to buy something, do you buy it new or second-hand These days, buying second-hand things is becoming more popular.
Second-hand things are much cheaper than new ones, so people can save money. It’s also good for the environment. In 2020, the mass(质量) of all man-made materials became greater than that of every living thing on Earth. So it’s a better choice (选择) to reuse old things.
People can even find some “extinct” (绝版的) things, or things that are no longer made. For example, some people like to buy vintage things, including clothes and accessories (饰品). These things often go back 30 years or even more. But as long as they’re in good condition, people can still use them.
Second-hand things connect (联系) people. In this way, they sometimes pass on history and stories. Here are two examples.
Zhao Kaiqi, 22, college student, Harbin, Heilongjiang
I love buying books on Deja Vu, an online second-hand trading site. It’s a good choice for students like me. I can save a lot of money. It also brings me interesting experiences that I don’t have when I buy new books. One time, I found a note in a second-hand book. Its previous (之前的) owner left the note, hoping that I would enjoy the book. It was heartwarming to read. I want to do something like that in the future.
Kate, 25, writer, London, UK
I am a big fan of vintage items. They are special. I like things from the 1950s and 1960s. Vintage things carry stories from the past. Once I bought a bracelet (手链) with the words “Rose” and “Love, Jason” on it. It made me want to know about the story behind the bracelet. I think looking for vintage things is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It doesn’t matter how rich you are, but whether (是否) you can find a thing that fits you. It’s an interesting connection.

Dear Tommy,
I’m in Paris now! Mum, Sally and I came here to visit my uncle. We are having a wonderful time. Dad didn’t come because his company sent him to work in Japan last month. He will have to stay there until November.
For Sally and me, it’s our first time to come to France. We are so excited! Last week Mum went to different shows alone. She used to study in Paris, so she knows the city well. Sally and I visited many interesting places with Aunt Susan. Although we can’t speak French, it’s OK. Aunt Susan and Uncle Tyler can speak both French and English.
Yesterday afternoon, Mum, Sally and Aunt Susan stayed home cooking dinner. Uncle Tyler took me to go fishing. We drove for an hour and finally arrived at his favourite lake. First, we walked around the lake looking for a good place to fish. Uncle Tyler said we should fish from the top of a large rock. I was so interested in catching a fish that when I threw my fishing line and hook (鱼钩) out, the rod (鱼竿) went with them!
Uncle Tyler got my rod out of the lake. Then he said that next time, I should wait until he put bait (鱼饵) on the hook.
We fished for two hours and my uncle caught four fish. He is a fantastic fisherman.
The only thing I caught was a cold. I can’t wait to go again soon, so I can become a great fisherman like him.
Yours,

Do teenagers in small villages do chores at home How about the teenagers in big cities
Here is a survey. We asked 4,000 teenagers in China several questions. Half of them come from big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The others are from small villages. We made a diagram of the result of our survey. Let’s have a look at it.
We found out that teenagers from small villages do more chores than those from big cities. Maybe it is because they live a harder life. Our advice to parents in big cities is that parents should give their children some chores to do. Doing chores teaches teenagers to take care of themselves.

A.Because they don’t want teenagers in China to do chores at home.

If you’re lucky, you can watch TV when the chores are doing the chores.

Because I was too shy to tell them my feelings face to face, I wrote the note and put it on the desk in their bedroom. I imagined how they would feel after they read the note thousands of times before going to bed.
Early the next morning, I heard a soft knock at my door. As soon as I opened the door, I found my mom and dad standing outside. They kissed me and thanked me for the note. Mom said that she was thinking I was a little child, but to her surprise, I grew into a young boy unconsciously (不知不觉地). Dad said he was happy that I could share my true feelings with them.
Seeing the smiles on their faces made me laugh happily. At the same time, I was surprised that my simple words could touch them so much. On that day, I saw my dad cry for the first time. The beautiful memory (记忆) stayed in my heart from then on.

It was a fine afternoon. Eddie was putting his toys into boxes. His family were about to move to a new house, and they needed their home cleaned for the next family. Eddie looked around his big and empty house, feeling a little sad. He liked this house and his friends—he did not really want to move.
Eddie followed his mother to the attic(阁楼). Eddie’s father was already up there, looking through boxes of old photos. He handed Eddie one. It did not have much color left, but showed a young boy playing baseball in his backyard.
“Who is that ” Eddie asked.
“That is me, Eddie, when I was your age,” his father replied.
“Look! Here’s one of me,” Eddie’s mother said, handing Eddie another photo. In it, a young girl was playing hopscotch (跳房子).
“You guys were kids ” Eddie asked.
“We weren’t born this old,” Eddie’s mother said, laughing.
Eddie looked at the photos some more. He had never seen his dad or mom playing baseball or hopscotch or other games. They were always working, cooking, cleaning, and driving. It was hard to imagine them as kids playing in their backyards.
Looking out, Eddie could see his backyard. He did have a lot of fun there, but he was not a little kid anymore. At the new house, he would go to a new school. He wanted to try out for the school soccer team and join the drama club. Maybe it was a good time to move after all.

Have you made unplanned buys this week Your impulse (冲动的) buys could reach$5,400 every year. That’s how much American people spend each year on impulse buys, according to a new study by Slickdeals. The study of 2,000 people shows they make three of those buys a week, adding up to $450 a month and $5,400 per year.
While shopping—impulsively or not—can be fun, the results might not be so great if you didn’t plan for it. If you’re among those who have to fight against impulse shopping and it’s causing trouble, there are some ways to control yourself.
For example, before you head to the checkout with your impulse buy, whether in a store or online, take a minute to ask yourself whether you really need it. “Is this necessary Would I buy it anyway If not, wait a day and then decide if it’s a buy that makes sense. Remember not to buy anything just because it’s cheap. It’s still important to check whether it is the lowest price you can get.” said Meyers, CEO of Slickdeals.
If you’re shopping online and see a great price, make sure you think about the shipping costs (运输费用) before you press the buy button. With a little research, you might find a better deal somewhere else. You should also check on return policies (政策). If you regret (后悔) your impulse buy, it might end up costing you money even if you return it.
And as for those impulsive food buys If they usually happen at the street, making a shopping list and adding nothing to it while shopping are also ways for no extra (额外的) shopping in your bag. Also, don’t fight against nature. “Don’t go to the store when you’re hungry. Leave home with a full stomach.” Meyers said.

Many kids do housework at home. In exchange, they get some money or other computer time.
Paying kids for housework is one of the most popular topics, especially at a time when everyone is more careful about money. Some parents think since adults are paid to do their jobs, we should pay kids for everyday housework.
But some people don’t think so. Susie Walton, an expert, believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn’t worth doing (不值得做) unless you get something in return. “Running any kind of housework is a team effort,” Walton said. “A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities (责任) in the house.”
Other people believe that getting a reward encourages (鼓励) kids to do housework, and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to get money. There are also apps that give kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed (兑现) either online or in the real world.“Our goal is to give kids lawful power so they can get rewards,” says Chris Bergman. “And kids need rewards to help encourage them.”

This actually helps kids know that how hard it is to make money. They also get to know the real value(价值) of money. For example, I give my daughter Susan $1 each time for doing the dishes or cleaning the living room. She saves the money and spends it on her favorite books. This makes her get mature(成熟的) faster and act like a real grown up.
—Eason
Rewards(奖励) are always helpful in developing good habits. It’s important to give them some rewards for doing chores. It could be money, something fun on the weekend or just words like “Nice work on the dishes!”
—Miranda
What’s going to be their motivation(动机) to keep the rooms clean when they move out to live alone I’m not going to drive to their apartment once a week and give them $20 if they do well. They need to learn that the only real reward for doing chores is having a clean home.
—Hanks
Doing chores without getting paid teaches kids the true meaning of hard work. If you pay kids to do chores, they might stop helping if they’re not being paid. Also, kids might start asking for more money to do simple chores. Is this really what you want
—Yvonne

Most children don’t enjoy doing chores. They like playing computer games rather than cleaning the rooms. But in Australia, Jim and Robert’s mother, Mrs. Black, has good and proper methods to get their children to do housework.
Here is an example.
“Mom, have you worked out next week’s chores Let Jim and me choose the cards. I can’t wait. It’s fun! ”
When Robert shouted out, his mother had already put all the cards on their big table. On the cards, there are some words like these, “sweep the floor, clean your bedroom, help mom cook, wash vegetables, make beds, feed the fish, cut the wood, clean the bathroom” and many others. Jim and Robert chose two cards for each day from Monday to Friday. Then they would hang them on the weekday task board. Jim likes to clean the bathroom, so he picked up the card “clean the bathroom”. Robert loves to make the bed so he picked up his favorite card. Jim again picked up “wash vegetables” and Robert chose “feed the fish”. Soon the two boys were happy to take away all the cards.
To help the children do chores, their mother thought hard and figure out this idea. Of course, the parents did the chores at weekends and left Jim and Robert two days free.

We have already cleared out a lot of things from our bedrooms. We have decided to each sell five things that we no longer use. My son was quite sad at first. Although he has not played with his old toys for a long time, he still wanted to keep them. For example, he has owned a train and railway set since his fourth birthday, and he played with it almost every week until he was about seven. And he did not want to lose his toy monkey, either. He slept next to the monkey every night when he was a child. My daughter was more understanding, although she also felt sad to part with (出让) certain toys. And my wife wouldn’t like to lose her hats which were out of fashion.
As for me, I did not want to give up my football shirts, but, to be honest, I have not played for a while now. I am getting older, too!
