I am a Canadian. Our family moved to Australia when I was 6 years old. We are lucky to be able to travel to Canada to visit relatives each year. We often make this trip during winter months.
In Canada, the winter is very cold, and every person in this country must have a warm jacket to get through the season. At the end of each visit, before our flights flies back to Australia, we have a traditional of walking through the streets with our winter coats, scarves, gloves and hats in our hands to look for someone in need of warm clothes. After all, we won’t need them when we return to Australia. We have kept doing this for 20 years since we moved to Australia.
During our last trip, as we walked through the cold streets, we saw an old woman shivering in a light coat, politely begging for money and food. We felt sad to see this. So we gave her 20 dollars. Then, I took my husband’s thick coat, wrapped(装) it around her, and gave her a warm hug. Tears ran down both our cheeks.
I hope our small act of kindness will help the old woman during this hard time on her life journey. I’ll never forget her. After all, we are both someone’s daughter or mother.

Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. or, in summer, they may think it is the beat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time—about eight hours after you wake up—your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy.
Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later.
In many parts of the world, people take naps (小睡) in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problems such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it!
If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap—even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.
1. Why do you sometimes feel sleepy in the early afternoon
A. Because it’s very hot in summer.
B. Because you eat too much for lunch.
C. Because you didn’t have a good sleep last night.
D. Because your body temperature goes down at that time.
2. What advice does the writer give on taking a nap
A. If your time is limited, a short nap can also help.
B. Only people in warmer climate need to take a nap.
C. You’d better take a nap about an hour after you have lunch.
D. You can sleep as long as you like so that you won’t feel tired or sleepy.
3. What can we infer (推断) from the passage
A. You will feel less sleepy if you sleep for a long time.
B. Taking a nap whenever you want will do good to your health.
C. If you get up at 6: 30 a.m., you’d better take a nap at about 2: 30 p.m.
D. Sleeping for eight hours and you’ll feel sleepy a short period later.

A university student from Hangzhou has become a hero after saving an 18-month-old kid from the mouth of a cougar(美洲狮) during his exchange program in Canada.
The kid’s grandfather, Myers, invited Shen Huigang, 22, to Kennedy Lake on Vancouver Island along with his three-year-old granddaughter Alice and 18-month-old grandson Julian on August 29.
When they were about to leave, Julian cried in surprise. Then they saw his head was already in the mouth of a cougar.
“At first, I didn’t know what to do,” Shen recalled. “But I still had the belief I could get the child back.”
Shen waved his bag wildly to scare the 1-meter-tall cat.
On hearing the noise Shen made, the animal dropped the kid. Taking this opportunity, Myers pulled back Julian, who had got hurt in neck and brain.
The cougar then turned to Alice, who stood still with fear. Shen took Alice in his arms and waved his bag. They gradually drove the animal back into the woods.
The short distance from the lakeside to their car seemed to last a century.
Finally, the four got into the car, locked all the doors and started the engine immediately. Julian was sent to one of the best hospitals in Vancouver by helicopter and got well a few days later.
The Royal Canadian Humane Association gave a Canada Bravery Award to Shen, making him the first Chinese to receive the award.
