In 2005, Calvin Echevarria was on top of his game. He had two jobs, bought a house and was raising a 3-year-old daughter with his wife. But suddenly, it felt like it was all taken away. He could no longer work as a FedEx driver because he developed diabetic retinopathy (视网膜病) and was going blind.
Calvin at first worked on developing independent living skills like walking with a stick. But he wanted to learn more—like skills that would be useful for a job. That’s when he found Lighthouse Works in Orlando, a company that creates jobs for the visually impaired (受损的) and blind.
“Seven out of ten people who are visually impaired are not in the workforce,” said Kyle Johnson, president and CEO of Lighthouse Works. “And we knew some blind people are highly educated. And they’re very capable people, who want to work and contribute. So, we created Lighthouse Works to help them do that.”
Calvin works in the call center, where Lighthouse Works has contracts with several clients, including the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. In his job, Calvin uses a system called JAWS to “hear” the computer he uses. The system reads the computer screen to Calvin in one ear as he listens to a customer call in his other ear.
He said what makes his call center job fun is that the person on the other end of the phone doesn’t even know he’s blind. And he said working in a fully accessible office space, with other visually impaired people who can relate to him, is an added benefit.
“It gives me a purpose. It makes me feel better because I can actually be proud of myself, saying, ‘I provide for my family,’” he said.
24. What can be learned about Echevarria before he got diabetic retinopathy
A. He was the best worker in his company.
B. He was gifted at playing games.
C. He had to work hard to support his family.
D. He was satisfied with his life.
25. What is the purpose of Lighthouse Works
A. To make more profits. B. To do research on retinopathy.
C. To aid the visually impaired. D. To educate the visually impaired.
26. What is the function of JAWS in Calvin’s job
A. Making him “see” the computer screen.
B. Helping him hear the customer better.
C. Enabling him to locate customers easily.
D. Teaching him how to answer a customer.
27. Which of the following can best sum up Calvin’s story
A. It’s never too old to learn.
B. When God closes a door, he opens a window.
C. A journey of one thousand miles begins with one step.
D. A thousand miles of walking is better than ten years of reading.
C
Research led by the University of Leeds has found that children do better at primary school if their fathers regularly spend time with them on interactive engagement activities like reading, playing, telling stories, drawing and singing.
Analyzing primary school test scores for five-and seven-year-olds, the researchers used a representative sample of nearly 5,000 mother-father households in England from the Millenium Cohort Study, which collected data on children born during 2000—2002 as they grew up.
According to the research, dads who regularly drew, played and read with their three-year-olds helped their children do better at school by age five. Dads being involved at age five also helped improve scores in seven-year-olds’ Key Stage Assessments.
Dr Helen Norman, who led the research, said, “Mothers still tend to assume the primary carer role and therefore tend to do the most childcare, but if fathers actively engage in childcare too, it significantly increases the likelihood of children getting better grades in primary school. This is why encouraging and supporting fathers to share childcare with the mother, from an early stage in the child’s life, is critical.”
Dads’ involvement impacted positively on their children’s school achievement regardless of the child’s gender, ethnicity, age in the school year and household income, according to the report. There were different effects when mums and dads took part in the same activities—the data showed that mums had more of an impact on young children’s emotional and social behaviors than educational achievement.
The researchers recommend that dads carve out as much time as they can to engage in interactive activities with their children each week. For busy, working dads, even just ten minutes a day could potentially have educational benefits.
28. How did researchers draw their conclusion
A. Through experiments. B. By making comparisons.
C. By doing surveys. D. Through data analysis.
29. What should a father do to improve his kid’s school performance
A. Create a wonderful learning environment.
B. Meet all the kid’s demands.
C. Care for the kid with the mother.
D. Focus on the kid’s study.
30. In which aspect does a mother influence a kid more than a father does
A. Emotion management. B. Educational achievement.
C. Intelligence development. D. Physical health.
31. What can be inferred from the text
A. Father takes on more responsibilities in kids’ development.
B. Children benefit from reading and playing.
C. Father plays a more important role than mother.
D. Father sharing childcare makes for kids’ schooling.
D
The damage brought by wildfires reaches everything that lives in or near a burning field or forest, including microbes (微生物). A better understanding of how microbial communities change and grow after a fire could help researchers predict how bacteria and fungi will deal with major environmental changes.
A study published this week in mSystems suggests that dispersal (传播)—through air or rain, for example—plays a major role in microbial succession (更迭) after a big fire. Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, spent a year tracking how microbial communities returned to the leaf litter in a burned field. They found that the emerging microbial communities in the soil surface changed with the seasons and the reappearance of plants, and that the gathering of those communities was largely driven by dispersal.
“We know with climate change and human activity we’re disturbing our ecosystems more and more,” said Kristin Barbour, lead author on the new study and a Ph. D. student at the University of California, Irvine. “Microbes, especially those in the surface soil, perform a number of really key ecosystem processes, like carbon and nitrogen cycling.” Bacteria and fungi, she said, break down the dead and decaying (腐烂的) plant matter on the floor of a field or forest.
Barbour originally set out to study microbial dispersal in the context of droughts, but her plans changed after an unexpected wildfire burned a field site at Loma Ridge, near Irvine. What seemed like a trouble became an opening. “We wanted to take advantage of this disturbance, especially since wildfire is becoming more frequent in many parts of the world,” Barbour said.
32. Which of the following depends on microbes
A. Climate change. B. Wildfire control.
C. Ecosystem cycling. D. Pollution prevention.
33. What made Barbour give up her original plan
A. Microbes can’t survive in extreme droughts.
B. Her work is often interrupted by changing weather.
C. She couldn’t get the government’s support.
D. A wildfire accidentally broke out in a certain place.
34. What does the underlined word “opening” in the last paragraph mean
A. Opportunity. B. Dream. C. Thought. D. Solution.
35. What may be a suitable title for the text
A. Wildfire is becoming more frequent.
B. How microbes return after a wildfire.
C. Wildfires do much damage to microbes.
D. Microbes play a key role in ecosystem.

One day as I drove toward my home in a small Colorado town, I passed the local bus stop. Several passengers had already exited a bus and were making their way to parked cars or setting off on foot to their various destinations.
I pulled up as a group of people crossed the road in front of me. As I watched, I noticed a thin, shabbily dressed old lady struggling with a large suitcase.
She managed to carry it for a few yards before setting it down on the ground. After resting for a few moments, she picked it up with the other hand and pressed on, stopping now and then to rest and change hands. When the traffic started to move again, I saw the same elderly lady still struggling with the overweight suitcase. This was before the days when suitcases were fitted with little wheels that enabled travelers to pull their luggage behind them with the least amount of effort.
Now, witnessing this lady and remembering similar struggles I had experienced before when traveling, I pulled up alongside her and leaned over to call out through the open passenger window, “Excuse me, . Would you like a lift ”
She stopped and stared at me suspiciously without answering. I repeated, “Do you want a lift ” She still hesitated and then started to walk slowly toward me, dragging her suitcase along the road. “I’m going right into the town,” I said. “If you want to tell me where you are going, I’ll drop you off. That suitcase looks awfully heavy.”

W: “Should I give my kid a cell phone ” This question is asked by many parents of 12-year-olds. They don’t want to give their kids a phone too soon, but what is the right age Kids as young as four are given their first cell phone, but the average age is ten. Parents aren’t sure if it’s safe. The kids, of course, want a phone mainly because everyone else has one. But when they beg their parents for one, they point out other benefits. “It’ll be easy to find me,” they say. “If anything happens, I can call for help.” And it’s true that parents might have less to worry about if their kid is available by phone. But they worry about things like health risks and falling grades if their kid can’t control their screen time. Parents try to use technology to stay in control. 27% of those phones have features blocked, and 15% of parents use GPS to follow their kid. Experts say that it’s important to talk to their kid about the rules. As their kid gets older, the conversation should include safe cell phone use for drivers.

写作第二节(满分25分)
One possible version:
“Well, all right,” she answered in an almost unfriendly voice. And after we both had lifted her luggage into the back of my pickup, she settled herself without a word on the front seat beside me. My attempts at conversation failed, so I settled for an uneasy silence except for directions to her destination. When we got there, I helped her down with the suitcase. Standing on the sidewalk, she dug her hand into a pocket. I looked at her, puzzled, wondering what she was doing.
Finally, she uttered (说出) some words, “What do I owe you I don’t have much.” Surprised, I said, “You don’t owe me anything. I was glad to be able to help.” Her expression changed immediately, and she stared at me unbelievably. “Well, you are so kind, lady. No one has ever done me a favor like that before. I hope someone will do a good turn for you one day.” Then she disappeared down an alley without waiting for any further help from me. I never thought about getting something from helping someone, but I did feel satisfied and happy at that moment.
