It’s been more than 60 years since Jane Goodall started her pioneering work. In 1960, she was chosen to go to what is now Tanzania and study the little-known world of chimpanzees. Since then, Goodall has received many awards and honorary degrees as a world-famous conservationist (自然环境保护主义者). Now, Goodall has received an unusual honor. She is becoming a toy — a Barbie doll.
Goodall may not have expected to become a Barbie at 88 years old — but it’s not just any doll, it’s made out of recycled plastic. And Barbie is partnering with the Jane Goodall Foundation and its Roots & Shoots program which inspires young people to protect animals and the environment.
“You know, the main message is that every day you live, you make an influence on the planet and you get to choose what sort of influence you make,” Goodall said.
“There was a little boy of 7 in Burundi, and I had given a talk to the school and he came up to me and said, ‘If I pick out a piece of trash every day, it will make a difference, won’t it ’ And I said, ‘Yes it will. And suppose you persuade (劝说) 10 of your friends to pick up a piece of rubbish every day.’ He said, ‘Oh, that would really make a difference and then they could all get 10 of their friends, couldn’t they ’ Goodall said, “So, that’s it. The cumulative (积累的) effect of small actions can lead to big change.”
She’s been inspiring young people for decades, but now, newer generations will get to know Jane Goodall. “I sincerely hope that it will help to create more interest in the natural world,” she said about the Barbie. “Because hopefully, you know, they’ll learn more about me through the doll. And that will get them interested. It doesn’t really matter if they have a career in conservation, as long as they pay attention to conservation in their daily lives.”

A. To give Jane Goodall a surprise.
B. To test the quality of recycled plastic.
C. To encourage environmental protection.
D. To start a cooperative research program.

B. Children will make the future world a better place.
C. Every child should pick up a piece of rubbish every day.

I was born in a poor community on the north side of Boston, US, raised by a single mother who didn’t finish 3rd grade, lived each day on food stamps (券) and attended what the media called “the most dysfunctional (功能失调的) public school district”. Not many people expected much of me, so I had to expect
On my 13th birthday, I bought a poster of Harvard to hang in my room. Being at Harvard became what I dreamt about. Even if my electricity was cut off, I still woke up at 5: 30, because I knew that my poster of Harvard was still hanging only two feet away from me.
Reminding myself of my goal each day made it easy to say no to the same choices I saw my peers making, because those paths wouldn’t have had me closer to my goal. Being poor could not take away my power to decide what I choose to do with my day. The poster gave me the courage to cold email about 50 Harvard students so I could ask for feedback on my application essays; it gave me the energy to study just one more hour on my SATs when my friends were asleep; and it gave me the determination to submit just one more scholarship application when180 others had already turned me down.
Every day, I could feel myself getting closer and closer to my goal as my writing got better, my SAT score increased, and my scholarship checks started coming in. Finally, an email arrived from Harvard. The first word was “Congratulations!” A month later, Harvard flew me up to visit the campus where for the first time I stepped onto my dreaming land.
Who you are today is the result of the decisions you made yesterday, and who you will be tomorrow will be the result of the choices you make today. Who do you want to be tomorrow

Plenty, an agricultural technology company in San Francisco, is reinventing farms and farming. Nater Storye, the company’s chief science officer says the future of the farms will be vertical (垂直的) and indoors, so food can be grown anywhere in the world all year round, and farms will employ robots and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the quality of growth for fruits and vegetables. Plenty does all those things but uses 95% less water and 99% less land.
As AI is on the rise, farmers on flat farms have been using new tools to make farming better or easier. In recent years, they have been using drones (无人机) and robots to improve efficiency. However, flat farms still use a lot of water and land, while a Plenty’s vertical farm can produce the same quantity of fruits and vegetables as a 720-acre flat farm, but on only 2 acres.
Plenty’s climate-controlled indoor farm has rows of plants growing vertically. There are LED lights shining on them, robots moving them around, and AI managing all the variables of water, temperature, and light. The conditions are so good that the production per acre is 400 times higher than that of an outdoor farm.
Another advantage of vertical farming is that the fruits and vegetables are grown at a warehouse nearby instead of 1,000 miles away or more from a city. That means many transportation miles are saved, which can reduce millions of tons of greenhouse gases every year and the price of fruits and vegetables will also go down. Imported (进口的) fruits and vegetables are more expensive, so poor people in society are at an extreme nutritional disadvantage. Vertical farms could cope with this problem.
Also, Plenty’s farms grow organic food without using herbicides (除草剂) or pesticides. They recycle all the water used, even catching the water in the air. The best farm in San Francisco is using 100% renewable energy.
Moreover, all the packaging is 100% recyclable, made of recycled plastic and specially designed to keep the food fresh longer to reduce food waste. Ideally, the company will branch out, opening farms across the country and beyond.
12. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs
A. Robots and AI used on vertical farms can quicken the growth of plants.
B. Fruits and vegetables grown on vertical farms are more tasty.
C. Both land and water can be saved on vertical farms.
D. Plenty is the first company to grow crops on vertical farms.
13. What docs the underlined phrase “cope with” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Register. B. Improve. C. Present. D. Solve.
14. What can we infer about Plenty’s future vertical farms from the text
A They will have more farms. B. They will only be run by robots and AI.
C. They will bring about terrible problems. D. They will completely take the place of flat farms.
15. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To question the possibility of vertical farming
B. To show the technologies of vertical farming.
C. To discuss the potential problems of vertical farming
D. To introduce and explain the benefits of vertical farming.

Then, on the subway, there are changes at stations and other people who go to work speaking loudly on their phones to deal with. ___19___ And if you’re worried about safety, there are designated cycle lanes in many major cities. In addition, wearing high-visibility clothing is another way to improve your safety when cycling on the roads.
___20___ It can help you reduce your carbon footprints. Not giving off greenhouse gases into the atmosphere is better for the planet and your own environment.
So whether people want to cycle for their health, their wallet, the environment, or a combination of all of them —the popularity of cycling is on the rise.

My family moved from Taiwan to a smalltown in central Georgia, where my dad got a visa for his family and a job. I had just learned English, and from what little I could gather from my friends. Santa Claus would come down one’s chimney and put toys in one’s stocking on Christmas Eve! What a great country, I thought. After I looked up “stocking” in my Chinese-English dictionary, I knew what I had to do and always expected that day.
Finally, the big day came. On that wonderful night, after everyone went to bed, I sneaked out of bed, took my longest, cleanest knee sock and attached it to a nail already on the mantel (壁炉). Obviously, the previous owners of this house were no strangers to this Santa character. Gazing at the sock and imagining the delicately-packed gift in it, I couldn’t help giggling (咯咯笑). For the first time, I found it hard to fall asleep.
And for the first time, I woke up before everyone else in the early morning. Then I headed straight to the fireplace and was even ready for what to say after seeing the gift. However, what happened next was the least thing I wanted to mention. On the nail was the empty and lonely sock. I was hit with the reality of the empty sock and the biggest lie ever told. I tried my best to holdback my tears but failed. Bursting into tears, I quickly took down the sock and stuffed it in the back of a drawer.
Every December since then, the topic of Christmas memories would unavoidably come up, and I would amuse my friends with my poor-little-me story. I had to make it as funny as possible, or else I would cry once again. I didn’t know whether any of my audience ever noticed the sparkling tears hidden in my eyes.
How could I know that Santa was just late Nine years ago, on Christmas Eve, I heard a knock on the door when I was watching TV. Unwillingly, I dragged my feet and opened the door.
(1)所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
(2)如下格式作答。
Outside the door stood an old man with a white beard and a red cap, holding a well-packed box.

4. What is the intention of Barbie’s making a doll of Jane Goodall
A. To give Jane Goodall a surprise.
B. To test the quality of recycled plastic.
C. To encourage environmental protection.
D. To start a cooperative research program.
5. What idea does Goodall’s conversation with the little boy mainly convey
A. Everyone can make an impact on the planet.
B. Children will make the future world a better place.
C. Every child should pick up a piece of rubbish every day.
D. The accumulation of tiny actions makes a great difference.
6. What is Goodall’s attitude towards the Barbie doll
A. Critical. B. Supportive.
C. Disapproving. D. Doubtful.
7. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Jane Goodall’s Good Expectation of Nature Conservation

C

A. They will have more farms.

In recent times, cycling has seen an increase in popularity, so many people raise a question: ___16___

But it’s not only about your body and mind there are also some plus sides for your wallet’s health.
Cycling can be a great way to go to work or get about town. ___18___ If you drive to work, sometimes finding somewhere to park can be a nightmare, whereas finding somewhere to chain your bike up can be much simpler.
So, whether people want to cycle for their health, their wallet, the environment, or a combination of all of them —the popularity of cycling is on the rise.

第二节 (满分25 分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
(1)所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
(2)如下格式作答。

Through tear-blurred eyes, I recognized the handwriting on the card.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Outside the door stood an old man with a white beard and a red cap, holding a well-packed box. Wearing a radiant smile, the man reached out his hands, passed the box to me and grinned “Christmas gift for you”. Shocked at the unexpected guest and gift, I was at a loss what to say. The moment he blended into the darkness, I untied the ribbon with heart thumping wildly. Inside the box lay a teddy bear I had longed for with an attached card. Once again, I couldn’t contain my tears.
Through tear-blurred eyes, I recognized the handwriting on the card. It was a friend of mine and I later discovered that the man was her father. She was one of the audience of my sad story. The card read: “Sorry, I’m late. Merry Christmas.” I wiped away tears, held the box tightly and felt a surge of warmth. Christmas memories of this year wouldn’t be a bitter joke. Instead, it was a miracle which witnessed a healed heart. So now I believe Santa is real. This Santa doesn’t come down our chimneys, but lives inside good and thoughtful people who really listen to friends, and then plan deliberate acts of kindness.
