Looking into the Future 练习
一、阅读理解
There is nothing quite like enjoying the sights, sounds and culture of a city while tasting a cup of coffee outdoors. But it is not that enjoyable when heat waves sweep the city. An outdoor cooling system produced by Kinonko, an Israeli company, began to be tested in Tel Aviv. The sweltering city is a perfect place to try the new technology.
With global warming heating up the temperature, it will soon be too hot to sit outside in cafés. While outdoor cooling systems have existed for a while, most of them use some sort of water or misting system to cool the air around them, consuming too much water and power. After two years of development, the perfect solution to the problem was found. “We have invented a new generation of air conditioner,” Kinonko CEO Leizer said.
As Leizer introduced, the energy is from the pressure created between liquid nitrogen (氮) and gas nitrogen. When liquid nitrogen at-196 degrees turns into gas, it produces a very strong pressure and the pressure is used to run a mechanical engine. It is that mechanical engine that slowly releases freezing nitrogen gas to cool down the air around it.
The technology is unique and amazing. Beyond the coolness of the concept, it also has other advantages. The work unit doesn’t need to be power-driven, and doesn’t blow out harmful warm air as it works. As for the potential price, it will probably be no more expensive than any other air conditioner. In addition, the liquid nitrogen container will need to be replaced every seven to ten days, depending on usage. This makes it an affordable option for all sorts of businesses. The cooling system is expected to be on the market in 2024.

One of the challenges in treating burn patients is the repetition of dressing changes, which can be extremely painful. To bring relief to this problem, University of Waterloo researchers have created a smart wound dressing material that uses advanced polymers(聚合物)for personalized treatment. This new dressing, tailored through 3D printing, could improve the recovery process for burn patients.
“The material has good surface adhesion, which is a key feature. It can easily become attached to the skin and be taken off,” said Dr. Boxin Zhao, a professor in Waterloo’s Department of Chemical Engineering, whose team has made significant advances in developing intelligent hydrogel(水凝胶)materials for use as a reusable wound dressing.
In developing the dressing, the researchers conducted a 3D scan of the patient’s face and body parts to personalize it to an individual’s needs. This enables the dressing to make good contact with surfaces like noses and fingers, making it perfect for creating personalized wound dressings for burn patients.
The dressing’s heat responsiveness allows it to warm on the skin and gently lower to room temperature. Additionally, when cooled in the fridge, the dressing become larger but become smaller in size at body temperature, making it easier and less painful to remove. Also, the dressing is designed to let go of the drug a little at a time, allowing for longer-lasting pain relief.
A study highlighting the team’s progress was recently published in the Journal of Colloids and Interface Science. The next step for Zhao’s research group is to continue improving the material’s properties to make it healthier and commercially workable. The material also has potential applications for cancer treatment. Traditionally, a patient may need to be in a clinic for hours. This dressing can provide assistance outside the clinic setting, reducing some of the challenges connected with traditional methods.

B.The material will be put into market.
C.The material has been applied to treat cancer.
D.The material is introduced to the public online.
Digital health refers to the system of interconnected devices that can monitor and report important health information. Doctors can then use that information to ensure that your treatment is tailor-made to your situation.
The most useful aspect of digital health is the ability to constantly and accurately monitor vital information. Wearable devices can record your blood pressure or the rhythm of your heartbeat. The information is then accessible remotely through the internet, so your doctor has a wealth of information about your daily health. Your doctor can then use that information remotely to make changes to your treatment at any time.
A survey conducted by the company Lightico in March 2020, reveals how satisfied consumers are with this type of remote care. Forty-one percent said that the remote treatment they had received by means of digital devices and the internet was either “good” or “excellent.” The same positive attitude toward digital health can be seen among investors. In the first quarter of 2020, US$3.1 billion in new investments poured into the digital health industry, setting a new investment record.
Much of the excitement is connected close with the use of voice technology in digital health care. Today, around 2.5 billion devices have voice interfaces (界面) like Alexa, which enable the devices to produce and understand speech. As a result, users can communicate with these devices about their health needs by speaking instead of typing on a computer. Seniors, for example, can use Alexa to check their daily schedules and receive reminders to take their medicine.
Advances in digital health, however, also bring privacy concerns. Information regarding your health could be used for advertising or marketing, for example. If health records are accessible online, protecting your information from theft and unauthorized use might be difficult. But if managed properly, the benefits of digital health could certainly outweigh the risks.
9.What is this article mainly about?
A.The current state of health care training.

C.Some digital health firms nearly went out of business.
D.Many institutions devoted effort to medical research.
11.What does this article explain about Alexa’s features?
A.How they make workers efficient.
B.How they can benefit the elderly.
C.How they save instructors time.
D.How they entertain youngsters.
12.According to this article, what is one concern about digital health?
A.Worries about the side effects caused by modern drugs.
B.Rising manufacturing costs in the health care industry.
C.Government regulations limiting the use of digital devices.
D.The danger that personal health data could be stolen.
Imagine being able to pop to your local park and pick some tomatoes, potatoes or even bananas to take home for dinner. Sounds too good to be true, right? For residents of Andernach, German, it’s not just a dream—it’s their reality.
In 2010, Andernach began its edible(可食用的)city project, planting 101 varieties of tomatoes in public green spaces around the city centre. Its 30,000 residents are free to help themselves to whatever grows, as are any other visitors.??The town’s motto of sorts is “Picking is encouraged—help yourself!” Every year a new type of plant is highlighted. In 2011, 100 types of beans were planted, while 2012saw the introduction of 20 onion varieties.
It’s a community effort, as local citizens are encouraged to help plant and maintain the gardens. This offers an opportunity to socialise as well as to learn about planting, cultivating and harvesting food.
An Andernach resident spoke to DW,“I often drop by to pick some herbs that I’m missing at home. Everything is easily accessible. There aren’t any fences. You just take what you need. The only thing is that you have to be quick once the fruits are ripe or they’ll all be gone!”
Andernach may have been the first in German, but it isn’t the only edible city. It’s part of the Edible Cities Network, a project funded by European Union to connect green urban foot initiatives around the world. Other cities include Carthage in Tunisia, Havana in Cuba and Sempeter-Vrtojba in Slovenia. In February 2022, the first Edible Cities Network Conference took place. Dr Ina Saumel, principal investigator of the Edible Cities Network, called it “a unique opportunity to invite researchers of edible city solutions and practitioners to the same table.”
Ultimately, the Edible Cities Network aims to give people “greener, more edible and, above all, more livable cities.” It is a response to the pressures of global climate change, and a significant cause full of hope.
13.What can residents do in public green spaces according to the edible city project?

二、七选五
Trees, plants and flowers are all around us and we enjoy their beauty every day. We are so used to them that we may even take them for granted without realising how much inspiration they have given us. In fact, nature has inspired many of the most fascinating designs around us. 17
People who are interested in exploring the relationship between art and science will enjoy Singapore’s ArtScience Museum. Shaped like a lotus flower, it appears to float above the waterfront promenade(滨海步道) with the water surrounding it. Its roof collects rainwater and channels it 35 metres down to a waterfall in the centre of the space. 18 Visitors are often amazed to find themselves in an urban building that so truly captures the beauty of natural forms.
Based on the form and process of termite(白蚁) mounds(土堆), Harare’s Eastgate Centre is a superb example of biomimicry(仿生学). It has a “skin” covered in holes. 19 At night, the heat absorbed by the wall during the day warms the cool air, creating a suitable temperature so that people can stay inside comfortably. The design reduces the need for traditional air conditioning and heating systems, saving a lot of energy and costs.
20 The surface of the apartment building is covered in panels that contain algae. The panels can capture heat from the sun and convert it into energy that powers the building. And that’s not all — the algae inside the panels can be harvested and used to produce fuel. Therefore, the building not only uses less energy, but also reduces damage to the environment.
Great buildings like these enables us to live in closer harmony with nature. 21 It may be challenging to meet the needs of today while protecting the world of tomorrow, but even the simplest organisms can help teach us how to achieve this.
A.It is also presented in various architectural designs.
B.What we need is to seek more inspiration from nature.
C.The holes are designed to allow air to move freely in and out.
D.The world’s first algae-powered building is in Hamburg, Germany.
E.The water is then recycled through the building’s plumbing system.
F.During the day, warm air is drawn into the building through the holes.
G.The design shows the connection between people and modern city environment.

The Magic Birthday Candles in Space
(An excerpt from a science fiction)
My birthday was going to be extra special for two reasons. For one thing, like Commander Park said, “Nobody’s ever turned nine in space before, David.” Mom, my sister Rebekah, and I were moving to Mars for a year. We’d spent almost two weeks in the spaceship so far.
I was trying to keep the other reason secret. But the day before my birthday, Rebekah caught me with my cheeks puffed (膨胀) way out. “What are you doing? Practicing to blow out all the candles this year?” She laughed. “This time I will,” I said. “Everybody on the ship will be watching, so...”
“Oh, David,” my sister interrupted.
“Your cake can’t have candles. Fire on a spaceship is too dangerous.”
When I turned away, she patted my shoulder. “At least you don’t have to worry about blowing them all out.”
Our mother has an important job, maintaining the ship’s electrical systems. Besides, I wanted to act mature about this. If I couldn’t blow out the candles like I wanted, at least I was old enough not to complain about it.
After dinner on my birthday, Mom floated into the cafeteria, carrying my birthday cake. I was amazed. “Candles!” I shouted, staring at the nine shining on top of the cake. “I thought fire wasn’t allowed on a spaceship.” “Look closer,” my mother said. The candles were really electrical lights, with tiny flame-shaped bulbs.
“Awesome,” I said. “But I wish I could blow them out.”
She laughed, then made a blow, and all nine went out. Another puff, and they lit up again.
“Everybody, sing!” ordered Commander Park. Once the passengers and crew were done, I took my deepest ever breath. I’m nine now. I can do this! I thought. Everyone watched the candles. Whoosh! I blew as hard as I could. All the ship’s lights went out! Everyone gasped (倒抽一口气).
“You didn’t have to blow that hard, David,” said Rebekah. I laughed, and so did Commander Park. Someone asked, “What’s wrong? When is the backup power coming on?”
“I’ll take a look. Does anyone have a flashlight on them?” said Mom.
No one would ever think of taking a flashlight to a birthday party.
