When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, Lower Ninth Ward, the city’s lowest neighborhood, was hit the hardest. And rebuilding work after the disaster was especially slow to come to that part of town.
Burnell, now 48, shared recently that people in the area went nine years after the storm without a grocery store (杂货店) .
“There was no place to buy things. You have to catch three buses to get to a store,” Burnell said. “My parents always taught me if there’s a problem, somebody’s got to make a move.”
Burnell made a big move. Using money he’d saved up, he bought a badly damaged building and got to work. Everybody thought he was crazy. Even his mother had her doubts. But Burnell insisted.
He put all his heart into the building, and usually worked up to 15 hours a day for months. The day finally came when Burmel’s grocery store opened. That was a moment he will never forget.
“The very first customer cried because she said she never thought the Lower Ninth Ward was coming back.”
“Just seeing so many people, the look on their faces, it’s a joy,” Burnell says. “It’s a headache back then but now it’s worth it.” The neighborhood now has a barbershop and a sweets shop — but there’s plenty of work still to be done. And Burnell isn’t resting.
“If it takes me doing it by myself, I’ll put one business at a time back into the Lower Ninth Ward.” he says. “Because it’s home.”
4. What was Burnell taught to do by his parents
A. Open a grocery store. B. Work hard for his dream.
C. Save Lower Ninth Ward. D. Solve problems he met.
5. What’s Burnell’s attitude towards opening the store
A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Determined. D. Negative.
6. Why is the first customer’s cry mentioned
A. To show her excitement. B. To prove Burnell was right.
C. To remind us of her sadness. D. To tell that life is difficult.
7. What can be inferred about Burnell
A. He is a clever businessman. B. He wants to bring the town back to life.
C. He thinks he has done enough. D. He is determined to make a big fortune.
D 5. C 6. A 7. B

根据倒数第三段中“The very first customer cried because she said she never thought the Lower Ninth Ward was coming back.(第一个顾客哭了,因为她说她从没想过Lower Ninth Ward还会回来。)” 故选A。

Improving the quality of your sleep can add years to your life and make a big difference in your overall health. Researchers have studied how much sleep you need for decades, but what about the best temperature for a good night’s sleep A new study shows how changing your bedroom temperature can give your sleep quality a push and help you avoid waking up tired.
The study looked at how different bedroom temperatures might affect sleep quality in senior adults. The results showed that senior adults, in comparison to younger populations, may benefit from slightly warmer temperatures at night, between 68 and 77 °F.
Past research suggests that our body temperature can change by 2 degrees overnight, and that a drop in temperature may help get our bodies and brains ready for a great night’s sleep. Other research shows that people sleeping in warmer temperatures report lower quality of sleep. These are all great reasons to try to turn down your bedroom temperature lower for sleep.
How warm or cool your bedroom is affects the body’s ability to regulate (调节) its temperature during the night, says Raj Dasgupta, chief medical advisor for Sleepopolis. “When we sleep, our body temperature naturally drops and rises, which is very important for achieving quality sleep.” So, if the bedroom temperature is too warm, it may affect the body’s ability to cool down, resulting in difficulty falling asleep, he explains.
The ideal temperature for sleep generally falls between 60 and 69 F, says Dr. Dasgupta. “This range helps your body cool down effectively, and supports your body temperature regulation,” he explains. But as the study found, slightly warmer temperatures may be better for older adults.
8. Whom does the study in paragraph 2 mainly focus on
A. Older adults. B. Young people. C. Female adults. D. School children.
9. What does previous research advise us to do
A. Change our body temperature. B. Sleep in warmer environment.
C. Report our quality of sleep. D. Turn bedroom temperature lower.
10. Why is too warm temperature bad for our sleep according to Dr. Dasgupta
A. It makes us uncomfortable. B. It may result in trouble falling asleep.
C. It leads to breathing problems. D. It increases wasteful use of energy.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. How sleep quality adds years to our life B. How bedroom temperatures affect our sleep
C. Why warmer temperatures are bad for health D. Why lower temperatures are good for our sleep
A 9. D 10. B 11. B
根据第二段“The study looked at how different bedroom temperatures might affect sleep quality in senior adults.(这项研究着眼于不同的卧室温度如何影响老年人的睡眠质量)”可知,第2段的研究主要集中在老年人。故选A。
根据第三段“Past research suggests that our body temperature can change by 2 degrees overnight, and that a drop in temperature may help get our bodies and brains ready for a great night’s sleep. Other research shows that people sleeping in warmer temperatures report lower quality of sleep. These are all great reasons to try to turn down your bedroom temperature lower for sleep.(过去的研究表明,我们的体温可以在一夜之间变化2度,温度下降可能有助于我们的身体和大脑为一夜好眠做好准备。其他研究表明,在温暖的温度下睡觉的人睡眠质量较低。这些都是为了睡觉而把卧室温度调低的好理由)”可知,以前的研究建议我们调低卧室温度。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“So, if the bedroom temperature is too warm, it may affect the body’s ability to cool down, resulting in difficulty falling asleep, he explains.(因此,他解释说,如果卧室温度过高,可能会影响身体降温的能力,导致入睡困难)”可知,根据达斯古普塔博士的说法,温度过高对我们的睡眠不利是因为这会导致入睡困难。
根据第一段“Improving the quality of your sleep can add years to your life and make a big difference in your overall health. Researchers have studied how much sleep you need for decades, but what about the best temperature for a good night’s sleep A new study shows how changing your bedroom temperature can give your sleep quality a push and help you avoid waking up tired.(改善你的睡眠质量可以延长你的寿命,并对你的整体健康产生很大的影响。几十年来,研究人员一直在研究你需要多少睡眠,但是晚上睡个好觉的最佳温度是多少呢?一项新的研究表明,改变卧室温度可以提高你的睡眠质量,帮助你避免醒来时感到疲倦)”结合文章解释了研究开展的经过以及研究人员指出理想的睡眠温度通常在华氏60至69度之间。可知,B选项“卧室温度如何影响我们的睡眠”最符合文章标题。故选B。

By the time most of the world discovered the kipunji monkey, it was already seriously endangered. These rare animals live in Tanzania and is not closely related to any other known monkeys. Thanks to smart protection efforts, their population is accumulating.
Kipunji monkeys live in groups and spend most of their time in trees. Local hunters knew about them, but researchers first identified the species in the early 2000s. A 2007survey found 1, 117 of the animals alive. Experts from organizations such as the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) stepped in to try to save the species.
One method of protecting kipunji monkeys was to reduce conflict between the monkeys and humans. Kipunji often come out of the forest to steal bananas, and carrots from farms, leading farmers to set traps that can kill the monkeys. So WCS workers put unpleasant things such as chili oil (辣椒油) on the leaves of the crops to keep the monkeys away. Farmers have also started growing crops like potatoes, which the monkeys are less interested in eating.
To discourage people from cutting down trees in the kipunji’s habitats (栖息地), the WCS has established other sources of wood. Kipunji habitats have been turned into protected parks and reserves.
So far, their efforts have been successful. A 2022 study found that the area in which the monkeys live has increased in size by nearly 20%, and their population has risen to 1, 966 animals. If the efforts continue, the population of kipunji monkey could double in 25 years. “It’s not perfect,” former WCS director Tim Davenport said. “But it’s in a considerably better place than it used to be.”
12. What does the underlined word “accumulating” in paragraph 1 mean
A Unchanging. B. Declining. C. Increasing. D. Disappearing.
13. What did the local farmers do to keep the monkeys away
A. Put chili oil on the crops. B. Grow crops they like less.
C. Turn their habitats into parks. D. Hunt down and kill them.
14. Why have other sources of wood been established
A. To protect the kipunji’s habitats. B. To make profit from the wood.
C. To educate the local villagers. D. To develop the local economy.
15. Which statement will Tim Davenport probably agree with
A. Kipunji monkeys’ current living condition is perfect.
B. The number of kipunji monkey will double in 25 years.
C. The WCS hasn’t done enough in protecting the monkey.
D. Continuous efforts should be made to protect the kipunji.
C 13. B 14. A 15. D

前文“First impressions are important, but everyone has an off day or makes mistakes in social situations. (第一印象很重要,但每个人都有不顺心的时候,或者在社交场合犯错的时候)”引出第一印象的话题,说明每个人都有可能留下糟糕的第一印象,后文“However, there are still things you can do to overcome a bad first impression. (然而,你仍然可以做一些事情来克服糟糕的第一印象)”提出有办法改变糟糕的第一印象,因此C项“Changing how people think of you is not an easy job (改变别人对你的看法不是一件容易的事)”符合语境,说明改变他人的看法不容易,起到过渡的作用,和后文构成转折。故选C。
【17题详解】
前文“Apologize. (道歉)”建议去道歉,后文“Showing that you are aware of your mistake and willing to take steps to overcome it can help improve the impression the other person has of you. (表现出你意识到自己的错误,并愿意采取措施来克服它,这有助于改善别人对你的印象)”解释道歉的作用,因此E项“Make an apology if your first meeting was affected by a mistake (如果你的第一次会面受到错误的影响,要道歉)”符合语境,承接前文,引出后文的解释,其中的apology与前文的Apologize呼应,mistake与后文的mistake是同词复现。故选E。
【18题详解】
空处位于段首,是段落主旨句,需统领段落内容。后文“You don’t want to make excuses, but it can be helpful to provide an honest explanation for why your first meeting went poorly. (你不想找借口,但如果你能诚实地解释为什么你的第一次会面不顺利,那就很有帮助了)”主要围绕解释原因展开,因此B项“Explain what happened (解释发生了什么)”符合语境,契合后文内容,其中的Explain与后文的explanation呼应。故选B。
【19题详解】
前文“If you won’t see them in another setting, ask if you can have another opportunity to let them get to see the real you. (如果你不想在其他场合见到他们,那就问他们是否有机会让他们看到真实的你)”建议争取一个看到真实的自己的机会,后文“For example, don’t continue pursuing (追求) someone after they have told you they are not interested. (例如,不要在某人告诉你他们对你不感兴趣之后继续追求)”举例说明不要穷追不舍,因此G项“However, respect the other person’s decision if they refuse your offer (然而,如果对方拒绝你的提议,尊重对方的决定)”符合语境,建议要尊重他人的决定,与前文构成转折,引出后文的例子。故选G。
【20题详解】
前文“If you do get another opportunity to overcome a poor initial impression, make sure you show the qualities and strengths that you have and keep it in your future interactions. (如果你确实得到了另一个机会来克服糟糕的第一印象,确保你展示了你所拥有的品质和优势,并在你们未来的互动中保持)”建议展示自己拥有的品质和优势,因此D项“Let the other person see the “real you” in actual situations (让对方在实际情况下看到“真实的你”)”符合语境,强调呈现真实的自己,承接前文。故选D。

Delia Henderson had always had a dream. She dreamed of taking part in the “Dance World Cup”. It was a famous dance talent show which attracted the best dancers around the world. She was promised by her father that someday she would be taken for an audition (试演) .
The night of her 14th birthday, her city was hit by an earthquake, which, unfortunately, hurt one of her legs terribly. She survived, but the doctor told her that she had to learn to walk with a wooden leg for the rest of her life.
Two years later, Delia saw a notice one day, saying that auditions of the “Dance World Cup” would be held in her city. Painful memories flashed through her mind. It hurt her that she couldn’t live her dream because of her injured leg. However, her mother said, “You learned to walk with your injured leg, so why not learn to dance with it ”
Delia knew it was true but walking was hard, and dancing would be harder. On top of that, she didn’t want to be seen as a joke on the stage. So she told her mother and herself that it was time to say goodbye to her dream.
Her father however, never forgot his promise to Delia. He signed her up for the show and since he wasn’t sure whether his daughter could get an audition, he did not say a single word to her about the whole thing. Until one day, he got the reply. It was a “Yes”. Excitedly, he took the news to Delia, but she was determined not to go.
Aware of Delia’s worry, her father slowly walked up to her.

Possible version 1
Aware of Delia’s worry, her father slowly walked up to her. He hugged her tightly and said, “We can not change what has happened, but we can try to make things happen. I know it’s hard for you, but we can’t escape the past. I made a promise to you, so help me deliver that promise to you. Whatever the result, I’ll be proud of you.” Deeply touched, Delia agreed to go at last. She practised and practised until the day came.
Delia was shaking with nervousness as she made her way to the stage. People were shocked seeing her leg, which made her more nervous. But in the crowd she saw her parents and she knew whatever happens, they would be there for her. The music began and she danced. The music stopped and the crowed stood up cheering for her. She was truly living her dream. She didn’t win, but for her, it was the best moment in her life.
Possible version 2
Aware of Delia’s worry, her father slowly walked up to her. She began to sob, helpless tears swelling up in her eyes. Her father gave her a tight hug and said, “I know how hard it has been for you to lose that leg, and I’m proud of your being strong enough to live with it. The past is written. We can’t escape it. I made a promise to you and I intend to keep it. But I can’t do it without your help. So, sweetheart, will you help me ”
Delia cried out loud and finally agreed to go. She practised hard until the day came. Delia was shaking with nervousness as she made her way to the stage. The audience gasped when seeing her leg, which made her more nervous. Delia was living her dream but was scared. In the crowd, she saw her parents smiling and waving at her. A sense of comfort settled her down. The music began and she began to dance beautifully. The music stopped, and the entire crowd, including the judges, stood up and clapped for her. It was the best moment of her life. Although she didn’t win the competition, she surely won her battle against her misfortune.

D
By the time most of the world discovered the kipunji monkey, it was already seriously endangered. These rare animals live in Tanzania and is not closely related to any other known monkeys. Thanks to smart protection efforts, their population is accumulating.
Kipunji monkeys live in groups and spend most of their time in trees. Local hunters knew about them but researchers first identified the species in the early 2000s.
A. Unchanging. B. Declining. C. Increasing.

Her father, however, never forgot his promise to Delia.
